@@lynntownsend100I agree! Here in Ohio, close to 20 yrs ago now, a woman named China Arnold put her newborn daughter IN HER MICROWAVE until the poor little one passed. Why? Bcz the baby’s father didn’t believe the baby belonged to him. She originally got 25 yrs, appealed for a new trial and wound up getting life w/no possibility of parole. Almost as disturbing as the crime, she sat through both trials stone faced as if she had no emotion at all. Oh and she also tried blaming the murder on her young nephew. I worked in the prison she’s incarcerated in and it struck ALL of us how she, nonchalantly used the prison dayroom microwave three times a day every day. One last annoying FYI about her, there are stupid men all over the U.S. that send her unimaginable amounts of money to her constantly. So for anyone familiar w/her case and or followed it, she’s living the highest life possible in prison and also has the cushiest job of working in the Warden’s office. 😡

So, if the death sentence doesn't deter people from committing murder then neither does any other given sentence. Many murders who were let go after serving long sentences have gone on to murder again but, if that person had been sentenced to death and it was carried out, then he/she wouldn't have had that chance.
@keenoled
@keenoled 7 месяцев назад
I don't think that's the argument being made. The death penalty would have been the ultimata thule, not One Of The Potential Punishments. It was there for when the crime was grave enough to contemplate it, not equal with prison time. On top of that, prison time in modern tiems isn't supposed to be a punishment, but a way to withhold someone from the public until they are safe to be released, ie they should be treated, not only locked up. Prison time as solely Punishment is not a very good investment for a society. And not many places outside the US rents out prisoners as slave workers, which would be basically the one way to make money off of them.

Hello, therapist here, I might be able to provide some answers. I actually worked as a therapist in a juvenile detention center for boys. The reason why we have a higher rate of younger people as criminals than older people has the possible explanation that the brain has not fully developed yet. As a person grows, so does their brain. The brain stops growing in the early twenties for girls and mid to late twenties for boys. The last part that stops forming is the prefrontal cortex, the part right behind your forehead. This region of the brain is very important in regards to decision making and predicting consequences. Before this part is formed, a person is less likely to recognize that they may receive negative consequences since they feel like they can get away with it. I hope that answers some of your questions.

I've lost three friends to murders over a 20 year period. One was kicked to death at random, the murderer was inexplicably aquitted and left the dock laughing. The next was beaten half to death by four students and died within a year from complications. One killer did 18 months while the other three walked. The third was murdered for reporting two child murders, but the police refused to pursue a proper investigation and called it "misadventure". Although there are problems with the death penalty I do believe we need it back - perhaps with some additional protections - but its not the only problem we have: the police and the courts are both failing the British people.

There is always a hue and cry about abolishing the death penalty. Of course, that all goes out the window when one of their own loved ones falls victim to animals like this. (Yes, there have been victims that oppose the death penalty for their perpetrators, but it's an extremely rare event.)

The main problem with capital punishment is in ensuring the right person is executed. There have been tragic cases in England where the wrong person was charged and hanged. The Christie case is a prime example. Timothy Evans was wrongly convicted and hanged in 1950 for the crimes of serial killer John Reginald Halliday Christie, who was arrested, tried, convicted and hanged in 1953.
@sirderam1

Timothy Evans put the noose around his own neck. He had the means, the motive, and the opportunity, and he walked into a police station of his own volition and confessed to the crime. What did he think was going to happen?
@RootlessNZ
@RootlessNZ 2 месяца назад
@@sirderam1 Evans was according to all accounts "feeble minded" and most likely did not realise what was going on at 10 Rillington Place. Maybe he felt guilty about his wife's death - in any case he was innocent.

Hello, therapist here, I've seen a lot of comments discussing why younger people seem more inclined to do crimes and believe that they will get away with it. There seems to be some confusion, so I might be able to provide some answers. I actually worked as a therapist in a juvenile detention center for boys for over two years.

I live in a country where people under 18 are treated more leniently for capital crimes. So terrorist groups appoint a 17-year-old to do the dirty. One such, after killing in cold blood a much-loved journalist, was shown in newspapers with his handcuffed hands over his head in a victory gesture. The angry demonstration march in the slain journalist's honor filled boulevards and stopped traffic all over the city, and he is still honored many years later. But he's still dead.

I haven’t seen this video yet. As a kid I read this in the papers, i’m Dutch so I read this in a Dutch paper. I’m almost 75 now but I never forgot the names of the young killers: Francis Forsyth, Norman Harris, Chris Darby and Terence Lutt who was the youngest (17 I think). The first three were hanged or maybe Darby not because he was convicted for manslaughter and Terence Lutt was sent to a prison for juvenile delinquents because he was too young for the death sentence. It sure made a big impression on me because they were young. I’m almost 75 now but I still remember this very well. What a horrible deed.

Such a needless crime. I have worked with young people for years and there are just some who are "born" to be bad. They have horrible parents, grandparents, etc, but there are just as many bad kids with great families as well. It's the truth that we reap the storm when we sow the wind. I am glad they were punished, it may or may not detour others, but they stopped their criminal behavior because of it.
