Nobody but those who know nothing about cinema ever thought Scorsese was ‘just about gangsters’. Besides it’s a false dichotomy since Scorsese’s ‘gangster films’ are just as rich with meaning as the rest.
His non gangster films are his most interesting films. Personally I don't care much for gangsters. They are like cowboy movies, they tend to be boring.

@@similaritiesendhere Which followers do you refer to? There are 2.3 billion Christians on the planet. Maybe not wise to pick the worst of that amount and tar all Christians with the same brush. The actual followers of Christ when he was alive went to their deaths for their faith.
@@tomben6180 Let me keep going: 1. The klan is a Christian group 2. Most white nationalist are Christians 3. Televangelist are Christians 4. Hitler was a Christian 5. Witch hunters were Christians 6. Spanish Inquisition was Christian 7. Bloody Mary was a Christian 8. Pope Nicholas V authorized slavery I guess none of that counts since they weren't "true Christians".
@@similaritiesendhere Hitler wasn’t Christian . Plus most of those are Protestants and Catholics. Not orthodoxy the true church. Orthodoxy has been targets of genocide since the apostles (they were killed)
@@dannyhuskerjay Hitler never left the Catholic church (google it) and Protestantism didn't exist when the leader of Christianity ok'd slavery (google it). Catholics not being "true Christians" is still the "no true scotsman" fallacy, by the way. The foundational belief of your religion (Catholic and Protestant) is that someone else was punished for your sins... and that it was the best thing to ever happen. You can argue til your face turns blue but, it won't change the fact that that's one of the most evil ideas ever written down.
The soundtrack Peter Gabriel created for Last Temptation invokes so much depth and beauty that many people were weeping openly in theaters upon the films release in 1989. I’m proud to say that after 30 years of watching this film it still brings me tears of joy, an incredibly unique & powerful film. Dafoe at his best!!
And God, in his ignorant teachings, taught humanity to hate what he was created for and enjoy earthly pleasures I crave lust, I crave power and dominion What's so wrong about that?
@@diongeorge5737 The Catholic Church and other Christian groups boycotted and picketed the film while it was in theaters and because of the outcry The Academy shied away from nominating from the film. Scorsese was nominated for director and that was it
Do you know this as fact? To me, the snake doesn’t look real at all. If it was a real snake, they should’ve utilized it’s movement more. They could’ve easily interchanged it with a model snake to blow up, too.
It's a real snake right up until the frame it explodes at which is a fake snake. As much as possible is done practically, he didn't want flashy special effects distracting from the film. The fire looks awesome and evil and again it's a real in camera effect.
- We're not the same. You're literally Satan. - Well... To each his own. I chose my path, you chose the way of the saviour. And they found you amusing for a while, the people of this village. But the one thing they love more than a saviour is to see a saviour fail, fall, die trying. In spite of the miracles you've done for them, eventually they will hate you. Why bother? - Because it's right. - [slaps Jesus on the head] Here's the real truth. There are eight hundred people in this village. And those teeming masses exist for the sole purpose of lifting the few exceptional gods onto their shoulders. You, me? We're gods. [leans in and grabs Jesus neck] I could squash you like a bug right now, but I'm offering you a choice. Join me! Imagine what we could accomplish together... what we could create. Or we could destroy! Cause the deaths of countless innocents in selfish crusades and huntings in your name again and again and again until we're both exhausted! Is that what you want? [Opens a hellish portal on the ground] Think about it, saviour! [Leaves]
I love the visual representation when Jesus tells the lion to step in his circle and when he does he disappears im not sure but this translated to me in real life with false illusions .Seeming real but when its time to show out you can see right through those ilusions only for it to be the devil in disguise😱. Have a blessed day everyone 🤗
I was captured by the film. I identified with Jesus drawing a circle around himself and having it out with God or Satan. Satan attacked Jesus when he was at his weakest but who still managed to recognize Satan's various forms and shove him off. Weak as he might be, Jesus did not waiver. Whether truth or allegory, it is impossible to not love the symbol of Christ. Whether you take Jesus as a story or as complete truth, it cannot NOT effect you.
He loves Jesus, he has feelings for him, that's why he can't divulge any personal information. I would know this because I am The Western Gull, aka God's finest!
"I am the one you've been waiting for." I think this is one of Satan's more clever tricks. He'll make us think that he's gone away when really he's just changed his guise.
Resist all that our bodies crave that exist for our enjoyment are not to be rejected for painful abstinence in the pursuit of some imaginary belief. All we have is flesh and we should honour it by taking pleasure in it
I read the book back in the early 70s while in the Navy. I loved the book, my mother a devote Catholic was scandalized but I didn't see it that way, it was a "what if" scenario. The "what if" Jesus was just tempted but actually took the devil up on his offer, the second half of the book is about what might have happened...in the end well the ending didn't change. It's not sacrilegious at least not in my estimation.
This was one of the very best pictures, besides passion, and the chosen. I like seeing the resistance of Jesus, actually having to overcome temptation.
3:14 "Join me! Imagine what we could accomplish together... what we could create. Or we could destroy! Cause the deaths of countless innocents in selfish battle again and again and again until we're both dead! Is that what you want?"
Not he but his followers by preaching the Satan thesis in the scene " You are God, The only son of God". Jesus rejected it in the scene but his followers conquered Rome by following satan. They sold their soul and got what they promised. Rome.

The book by Kazantzakis and the movie from Scorcesse, are both masterpieces! When i first saw the movie I was so impressed! By the way, Kazantzakis, during the 50s, was cursed by the Greek Orthodox church for this book!
I remember smoking ALOT of green and somehow watching this on my satellite years ago and this movie tripped me out so bad it even made me cry lol I was really baked

Okay, the demon in serpent form tempting Jesus with sex......I don’t know what was more disturbing. The snake demon or the idea of Jesus having those kinds of emotions.
For me this film made the New Testament believable in ways that no other Jesus movie ever did. We're all really lucky Scorsese didn't make this film five years earlier without Willem Dafoe, which apparently almost did happen. The crucifixion scene was like a classical painting, and just mind blowing. Quite possibly the best film of the 1980s.
All stories of sacrifice, honor and redemption fascinate and appeal to us because we cleanse and redeem ourselves through them and we wish that what we see and read in those stories were true.
I know most of the people here are not Christians and are attracted to other things apart from the message that Scorcese was trying to convey in his piece, but I find the movie very enlightening and those who "don't believe" should pay attention...Scorcese created this movie to call for those who think of themselves as "secular". this is why "Christians" don't like it; IT'S TOO HUMAN. Please, to those who believe and those who believe they don't believe...watch it, watch it twice.

@Cameron Matlock per Wikipedia,The book and the film depict Christ being tempted by imagining himself engaged in sexual activities, which has caused outrage from some Christians. The film includes a disclaimer stating "This film is not based on the Gospels, but upon the fictional exploration of the eternal spiritual conflict."[5]
Yes it is, and in the Roman Empire it was called "manus obscena" and was the equivalent of giving the middle finger. One reason why it was so rude is because, well, if you turn it around to face you, it's meant to look like a woman's naughty bits...
Satan is cleverer than any mere mortal man. Without a relationship with God it is certain you will a slave to all his wickedness - for not only your own destruction, but also this around you. I am without God, or anything - and yet even I know that much.
"After 10 days the hunger went away" Its not about hunger for food. Its the temptation of flesh. That is the hunger he meant. And the water of life he provided which would make you never thirst or hunger again.
