We wanted to check out this movie as we like old school animated films, and thought this was such a lovely and beautifully illustrated story. After doing more research of the movie, we've come to understand the story better.
Enjoy the video!

When it says "men can not see unicorns," it doesn't mean male, it means the "race of Man" (ie. human). In older dictionaries that is the first definition of "man."

It's quite a tragic love story and I love that you guys acknowledged that it didn't have a happy ending because that's one of the core lessons in this movie: no matter how hard you work for something, if it's not meant for you you will never have it. In the book there is a quote by the prince that says "aah love is strong but a habit is stronger and I knew that I loved by the way that I behaved." I've seen this movie so many times and there really isn't a place for it. Lir's "I love whom i love" speech comes close tho. Also when you think about the ending from the princes point of view, the unicorn ruined his sacrifice and cursed him. Lir knew he wasn't going to be able to be with her so he wanted to die for her only for her to bring him back to life. Now he has to live the rest of his life knowing that he would never be able to be with her. I recommend the book. Thank you for watching and reacting to this movie.

the movie is so beautiful and melancholic, one of my favorite animated movies of all time.

The laughing skull in the book was actually King Haggard's chief steward. The king, in his desire for happiness, killed him to feel some joy. It worked but only temporarily.

A lot of the artists of this film moved on to work on Studio Ghibli's first film Nausicaa.

Quick FYI -- the Skull is played by Rene Auberjenois. :D Also, Christopher Lee dubbed the film himself in German as well, and INSISTED that Haggard's motive rant be kept in the film when they were thinking of cutting it because he loved the book so much. (He did a terrific interview with a German interviewer several years back right before this film was released, and he talks about how Shakespearian King Haggard is.)

Yes, there isn't another film like this one. In any era. There's something so special about it. I loved watching your initial apprehension turn into interest and investment. More things are explained in the book. I don't recall if that cool pirate cat was in the original story, but the castle was cursed and the master wizard was referring to it. I guess maybe this was taken for granted that people knew this so it may not be explained in the book, but unicorns appear to the Innocent.

Most, if not all of the dialogue is straight out of the book! The decision to not change it for the movie makes it sound so "fancy" and I love that. Also the whole movie is really close to the book (in the book, here and there are some "side quests").

Oh yes, this is not Disney. And it's actually an anime, I believe.

Western company, but mainly Japanese animators. Most of whom went on to be part of Studio Ghibli I believe.

You don't understand. This video is at the core of my life before age 6. This story is the archetype of fantasy. It is a commentary on the fantasy genre. It is the Hamlet, the Batman, the Weird Al of stories - not only a parody, but a retelling of a tired old story that has been told countless times yet told in a new way, told in such a final way as to be THE definitive telling of the story, the one everyone goes to. Even though it makes fun of itself, its philosophy runs deep and will break you if you think about it hard enough. All this is packaged in childhood splendor and a nsfw tree.

Was animated by Japanese artist. I think they allowed the godzilla sound affect.

The dragon uses the Godzilla sound effect, and the Red Bull is Gamera, if I remember correctly. (With permission, in both cases.)

Beautiful story. Not for kids. Would like to see a remake who follows the book and the story in deep. I think it's needed.

There's lots of great non-Disney animated feature films and short films, and this adaptation of Peter S. Beagle's The Last Unicorn is definitely one of the best. A classic from Rankin/Bass. There's plenty of other great non-Disney animated projects to check out, like the projects by former Disney animator Don Bluth.

So two things. One you'll like. We'll start with that one. You hoped the cat got out. Go back and watch the very end where Molly and Schmendrick are getting their horses ready. On the back of Molly's horse there is a 'blink and you'll miss it' shot of the cat sitting there. So yes he very much got out of the castle and is alive and well! Second: You kept asking: "Why don't they ask King Haggard about the Unicorns? Like why would they do that? All the stories say it was HIS red bull that drove the unicorns to his kingdom. Mommy Fortuna even says that "He'll not have you" referring to Haggard. This king DID something to all the unicorns. The WORST thing you could do is just up and ask him about it. He'd likely have you killed on the spot. That is why they didn't ask him. There is just no scenario I can think of where that wouldn't end badly.
