Christians were fighting against pagans in northern Europe well into the 1300s. Islam had brutally conquered two thirds of the then Christian world by the 600s and held nearly all of *Spain* for centuries before the Christians pushed them back out. It wasn't as if Christians acquired some invincible power structure when they became the majority and paganism died out. Christians are almost always outnumbered in their battles.

It's the whole point of patron saints and exactly what leads to all the protestants or evangelical faiths regularly frotting at the mouth. As it was once so eloquently put: "Keeping people who have kissed statues and left votive offerings for millenia from kissing statues and leaving votive offerings is impossibe. The only thing you can do is change the names and faces." Ever wondered why literally all old European churches are built on old temples? And why the rituals to venerate a saint are largely copy/pasted from the ones used to appease the gods of old? Because people liked to go drop off two sesterzes at the Mercury temple for a save journey, so Rome decided to give the temple a little make over and now you go to St. Christopher's to drop off two bucks for a save journey.
Yeah but that wasn’t really the point of the video. It’s more about how long the preceding and dying magico-religious society endured without interruption in a hostile Judeo-Christian, and Islamic world.

@Gabriel Serrano 505 I mean Washington DC was founded in 1790 which was basically 1000+ years since the greeco-roman pantheon was last worshipped consistently. The "founding fathers" were rich protestants or vaguly theists to the point where they are borderline atheist who were into grecco-Roman architectural styles which was popular for formal structures and statues in the enlightenment Era that's why statues or buildings look greek inspired in DC. Just because a type of architectural style was popular doesnt it mean it was divinely inspired by Zeus it was intentionally built that way because they like the asthetic
They probably don't follow exactly like the old followers but I wouldn't be surprised if there is small sects or groups that genuinely practice some sort of faith towards old Olympian and other pagan gods
The pagan gods and goddesses are more relatable, because they have distinctive personality traits and flaws more like human beings. They are also generally aligned with natural forces that are part of their worshippers' daily lives. Because paganism develops over time and is based on tradition, it is generally less dogmatic and intolerant than "revealed" religions like Christianity and Islam. Hundreds of pagan cults coexisted for centuries which ended when Christianity and Islam took over the levers of government. While Greco-Roman paganism did have animal sacrifices, these sacrifices were generally eaten by the worshippers, with the exception of sacrifices offered to the chthonic gods and goddesses of Hades, where the animals were completely burnt to ash. On the other hand, pagans didn't tend to have holy wars and slaughter thousands of people in the process, and Greco-Roman religion frowned on human sacrifice.
zeus is still worshipped, as he is none other then the Euro version of Indra of the Vedic pantheon, so, in India Nepal and Bali of today, Indra (thusly Zeus) is still worshipped
Serious question: what does it give you or help with? Are you part of a community of worshippers? I ask because my experience with religion is that it is community building above all and provides basic (and advanced) principles of how to interact ethically with a community and individuals. You should be able to take the god out of the picture as the “Because I Said So” base and still have people with a set of rules who treat each other with respect; don’t murder or steal; respect contracts and have labor laws. Does worshipping Zeus et al provide any of these frameworks? Is it solely a private ritual with no community aspect? Trying to understand from a firsthand source.
@@sarahrosen4985 Are you familiar with Hinduism or Shintoism? Traditions like these are the best way to understand the worship of the ancient deities like the Greeks Gods. Unfortunately, we are for the most part scattered now but in ancient times there would have been a very strong communal component.
Keep in mind, the Latin word for "God" is Deus... as in Zeus, and it's still used by the Roman Catholic Church as the word for God. Not sure how anyone can argue that the pagan gods became Christian saints. Christian saints are real people. They were all living human beings sometime in the past 2 millennium unlike pagan gods.
I was reading that greek and roman religion stopped building temples and maintaining them centuries BC, after elites adopted more philosophical ideas and that also opened the path to Eastern religions to come. Tbat explains may explain why some regions converted so fast while others persisted for centuries.
I did a poor job of explaining it. It was too much to cover but even rhe ancient greeks questioned the gods. One of the reasons Socrates was put to death was for consistently going around Athens and making people question the existence of the gods, among other things. But yes, by the time christianity was created, there were already deep cracks in the religion of hellenism. The Hellenistic Faith is still heavily practiced today. It never fell. Just shoved into the closet by cults like Judaism and Christianity. There have always been worshippers of Zeus and the Olympians. And our faith has been growing stronger and bigger each year, with established temples in Australia, North America and Europe. An estimated 200 people come to the Hellenistic faith each year. There is no hidden secret. It's just our faith is not demanding. loudly obnoxious nor shoving people to "convert or die."
Would be interesting to see and hear about those who still worship the Hellenic faith. What are you guys up to, if anything? How do you view politics in light of your religion?
I'm just taking it day by day, man. I pray and make offerings to the Gods when I can and I constantly think about how to suffuse my life with Their worship. Politically speaking, you'll find that there's a pretty good variety of political stances. Me personally? I'm a moderate /left libertarian. The ancient world held a variety of opinions too so it's really not that hard to fit stuff into a polytheistic framework though I do believe that some things are going to be more inline with the traditions than others and I personally try to steer to what is consistent with my Gods. I see it as a balancing act. I try to adhere to the tradition but not so closely that it prevents me from living today. We're not the ancients and we don't have to be. Our religions can evolve. I would just like to make sure they evolve in ways consistent with the tradition rather than in ways that limit and damage the tradition

The artwork and video were great. If you would like constructive criticism, then two areas where I think you will certainly get better over tiime are in delivery and pronunciation. On delivery, I mean only that it's clear you were reading froma script. You might try working with just bullet points and then editing together a "final" audio track. Either way over time things bet better with practice. On pronunciation, there were a few words I know what you meant, like "monophysite" and a couple where I think I know, as in the sentence (17:18) "According to Anthony [Kaldis], Jusitinian was the last Roman emperor of [enumical?] important..." I am sure you mean "Kaldellis" and "ecumenical," as I have the source (Procopius of Caesarea: Tyranny, History, and Philosophy at the End of Antiquity). That's completely normal, as we all mispronounce words we've only seen written down, though for words like 'ecumenical' you can find the pronunciation online. (Also, in that same line, Kaldellis refered to Justinian as the "arbiter" of the Roman legal tradition, rather than "arbitrator." There is an unimportant technical distinction between the two words ('arbitrators' only settle disputes in private 'arbitrations' whereas 'arbiters' can settle disputes in general even without a formal proceeding), but I note it because it was otherwise a quotation from Dr. Kaldellis.) Much luck to you and your channel. I have subscribed.

The words Pagan and Paganism are Christian words. They originally meant "all non-Catholic religions". In modern times, It has come to include Protestant Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, the religons that falsely claim to be "Abrahamic". So keep in mind that the words "Pagan" and "Paganism" means all "Non-Catholic" or "Non-Christian" religions, in other words, Pagan is all the other religions of the world except Christianity, and that is how the term is being used here.
Excepting the use of the words "Pagan", Paganism" and the claim that Christianity is a monotheistic religion, this an interesting and informative video. Thank you.
In Romanian the word god means: dumnezeu ... literally: our Lord Zeus (from Latin: dominus Zeus). Very probable that some scattered Dacians were among the last worshippers of Zeus. Today the Romanians claim that they were christianized very early, from the time of apostle Andrew onward, but this seems very unprobable. Since Dacia was not part of the Roman Empire anymore, when Christianity became state religion there, it is much more probable that pagan believes continued to thrive there much longer.
I guess Zeus lives on in Latin Christianity like here in the Philippines where we call God specifically God the Father as Dyos Ama or Dios Ama, using the name Zeus or its derivative(s) for a different God altogether,...........or is it? in the end we might be referring to the same God, the sky god, God of Heaven..........the old skyfather.

In Greek the 'p' in Ptolemaios (Πτολεμαῖος) was pronounced, as the language more regularly allows for two stops at the start of the word. Some English speakers still do that for words and names like "Ptolemy" or "chthonic" (often pronounced either k'thonic or as "thonic" depending on the medium). Leaving the initial consonant silent is the norm in English (that's one the arbitrary rules linguists came up with in the 19th century) but I don't think it is strictly wrong to use something closer to the original pronunciation, just a relatively less common variant. The first recorded worshipers of ZEUS were the Hindus, of the OLDEST "organized" religion in the World, who worshiped a male DEITY called "Dyaus Piter"; meaning "Father GOD". "DYAUS" is the Sanskrit origin of our Latin word for "god", "DEUS". He was the god of the DAY "DAYAUS" sky and associated with Light, hence his later relationship (as father) to the Sun god Apollo. SOMEHOW, possibly according to the theory (NOT credible linguisitically through any language connection) that the Hindis were the ancestors of the later Sumerians of southern Mesopotamia to which they immigrated from India, the god morphed into the storm demon of the "South Wind" monsoon/simoom PAZUZ that sweeps in each year from the Persian Gulf. PAZUZ fits the character of ZeUS because BOTH were associated with storms of wind, water, thunder, and lightening!! PAZUZ was supposed to be the "demon" that "possessed" the character "Regan" in "The Exorcist", but the name means "Father"(PA) of "Life" ZUZ/ZEUS), or more like the Jews and Christians would say the "Living Father". Like the Hindu "father god" Brahma, he had a good side like Vishnu the Preserver and a BAD side like Shiva the Destroyer. It was in the latter character as the "animal" spirit (animus) of wild Nature that he was personified as a wild ANIMAL in the image of a ferociously leonine mastiff (a type of stout dog) with the PAZUZ amulet figures, which were actually supposed to WARD OFF EVIL spirits, NOT attract them!! There is also a Sumerian story preserved on clay tablets called "Etana and the Eagle of ZU"; here we see the FIRST association of ZEUS with the eagle as his totem bird. It was from THESE ASIAN precedents that the Greek form of ZEUS developed that we know so well from Greek mythology. The LAST worshippers of ZEUS are ironically, as indicated by the reference above, JEWS, CHRISTIANS, and MOSLEMS!!! The Hebrew god is consistently described in the "Old Testament" and "New Testament" as the "LIVING Father" and the "Father of LIFE". As such, he FIRST created the ANIMALS in the Garden of Eden and then sent them to Adam to name them. When he tells Moses in the book of the Exodus on Mount Sinai when Moses asks him who shall he tell Pharoah sent him to him "God" says "I AM that I AM (HAYYAH HAVAH/LIVING LIFE), you shall tell Pharoah "I AM (HAYYAH/ the "LIVING") sent me to you." The "New Testament" character of "IESOUS/IESUS/JESUS" is PARTLY based on that of ZEUS (as when he says "God is not the god of the dead but of the LIVING") combined with the pronunciation of "ISIS". And of course Moslems revere BOTH the god of the "old" and the "new" testaments, though they don't consider JESUS "divine" but the greatest human who ever lived. And in the Johannine "gospel" JESUS states when he is teaching in the Judish temple court and a bolt of THUNDER sounds that that was a VOICE with a message for the people. Thus, HE is EQUATING his "divine form" of Yahwah/YAHVAH" with ZEUS, the Greek THUNDER god!! So the worship of ZEUS is indeed STILL with us TODAY!!

Constantine's Governor/Bishop buddies then paid "kick backs" to Constantine personally. It was all a plan for Constantine to get his hands on Roman taxes. Theodosius then initiated Christian massacres of pagans and ordered Christians to raid the pagan temples and take the gold and treasure of the temples ...... Theodosius then took his "cut" of the stolen gold and treasure. Organized religions such as Christianity are nothing more than tools of the crooked and corrupt to get their hands on people's money.
a channel named history first gives completely inaccurate christian history and then completely fails to substantiate it beyond a generic quote, i have multiple questions 1. How is Zeus God the Father and Jesus apollos? i’d love to see the scholarship on that claim, since you completely lack understanding of christology i’ll explain it, God is 3 persons whom share one divine essence, how is this malleable or similar to any form of paganism? next i’d love to see the scholarship on “Christians conformed to pagan ideas” where and when? 💀
I disagree that Christianity is "monotheistic".That is Christian "misinformation" (aka a lie). Monotheism means that those who subscribe to it believe there exists in all of space and time, all of existence, only ONE diety. Christianity is many deities: The Jewish God, YHWH, which they just call "God" (or in Greek, Theos), The biblical "Jesus" who was deified by Christianity and The "Holy Spirit" which the Catholics and Non-Catholic believers call a "Godhead" just like the trinune godhead of Brahamanism (which Christianity calls polytheistic) which, like the Christian Trinity, manifests on earth as three different gods. Additionally Christianity has additional deities, including "Lucifer" aka Satan [a non-biblical Character] alon with a host of "angels" and "demons". Then the Catholics also have approximately 10,000 "Saints", dead humans who have been deified by the Catholic Church and are worshipped by Catholics who light candles under the idols of their deities, offer up coins to these idols, and pray to pray to dead deified human beings (familiar spirits).
Like, how do you mean? Like literally eating a baby? No. No such thing occurred. Someone once tried to give Him a meal of human flesh before but He quickly became upset with the man who did this when He realized what was being served. So upset that Zeus flooded the world!
Not Zeus (Jupiter). Jupiter/ Jesus, Indra has a vision of love and memory and expansion. These are his character traits. Cronus, (Saturn) Satan, Enki, Moloch, Shani: Is about limitations and restrictions also death. Recycling Saturn 🪐 is know for cannibalism and human sacrifice. In mythology he ate his children. They are opposites.
//@@WildMen4444 : Like, how do you mean? Like literally eating a baby? // True exactly. I ask because: 1. zeus and baal are allegedly the same entity 2. burning children and "feeding them" to baal is an established and very famous sacrifice 3. in israelite tradition offering burnt sacrifices during sabbath as a form of worship was also an established practise That suggests: 1. the entire baal, burnt sacrifices thing was inspired by israelite tradition 2: the symbolic feeding of children to baal may have its roots in offering burnt children sacrifices to zeus
Well, if pagans wished to remain legal they should not wage wars against the emperors. Theodosius faced one revolt in Salonica and one war by the pagan Eugenius. It is written by pagan writers as Arrian, that the empire, if not pagan, must be destroyed because the gods are not appeased by official sacrifices… So there was no compromise for them, not the Christians.
@@xiuhcoatl4830 And Ammianus Marcellinus who ensures us that the birth of a deformed baby was the sign of the fall of the empire was clever? Pagan antiquity was the real dark ages.
@@ΔημήτριοςΣκουρτέλης Just as christians do with sea food and colorful clothes... or chemistry, astrology, astronomy or physics... like saying the universe is infinite being enough to be condemned to death. No, the christian age is still the dark age
So you tell me that the Christians imitated the pagans. Well, The pagan world consisted of human sacrifices, (Battle of Salamis, 3 human victims offered to Dionysus, Galatians and Greek victims buried alive ceremoniously in Rome as remedy to danger from …Hannibal) Execution of unbelievers (like Socrates) and the public burning of their books like Anaxagoras, legal exposure of infants to their deaths, custom that led entire cities to be deprived of population, as says Polybius, and obscure ceremonies with untold secrets. And I may inform you that Constantine, whom you hate so much, was pronounced GOD by the pagans after his death.
@@ΔημήτριοςΣκουρτέλης - There were no human sacrifices in Salamis. -The Roman senate specifically banned human sacrifices. -Socrates was killed for supporting the thirty tyrants, the accusation of impiety was specifically refuted. -Books weren't burned except if it was by enemies destroying them in wars, unlike christians that purposefully destroyed them. -The spartan deformed children weren't thrown out of a mountain but left in the countryside when they were found by others. -Constantine the infanticide wasn't deified by anyone except christians. Didn't your false mangod teach you to not lie? Then why you keep lying constantly? Its pathetic that you have to lie in such obvious way to defend your degenerate cult.
Well, it'd be really weird if someone did. It'd be like a Muslim naming their dog Allah. Zeus is the supreme deity of the pantheon and was one of the most widely worshipped Gods. He has names like Hypsistos ("Most High") and Panhellenios ("God of All Greeks"). He's a God of Justice and Law and Fate. The Heavenly Father. To name a dog that would be incredibly awkward. A theophoric name like Diodorus ("Gift of Zeus") or Diogenes ("Born of Zeus") would be one thing but just flat out Zeus? It'd be inappropriate
