Coriolis: The Great Dark Roleplaying Game Live on Kickstarter!
Back it here: www.kickstarte...
Free League’s Original Science Fiction RPG Returns!
We are thrilled to announce that our science fiction RPG Coriolis: The Great Dark is now live on Kickstarter, an RPG about exploration, mysteries, and intrigue in a Lost Horizon.
All backers who pledge levels with physical rewards within the first 24 hours of the launch - i.e. no later than 3 pm CET March 20 - will get a bonus art print of the cover art.
If successfully funded, all backers will get the PDF versions of the game months ahead of the official release.
A boxed campaign set entitled The Flowers of Algorab is also part of the Kickstarter and delivered alongside the core game.
The campaign includes a list of stretch goals, including a full-color map of the Lost Horizon, custom dice, Alchemy Virtual Tabletop Content Module and a soundtrack with ambient music, with more stretch goals on the way.
You are an explorer in a dangerous universe. The enigmatic ruins of the Great Dark are shunned by most, but not by you. You seek them out, delve into their shadowy depths and uncover their secrets. The Blight - the cataclysmic scourge that spreads from the ruins - is your beacon. Where there is Blight, there are artifacts to be found. Ship City is dying, but you and your fellow explorers will do whatever it takes to create a better future. Don your delver suit, step aboard a mighty Greatship and venture down the Slipstream towards the unknown. Your creed: explore or perish.
Inspired by 19th century expeditions, deep sea diving and pulp archeology, Coriolis: The Great Dark offers you to join dangerous expeditions, navigate the Byzantine schemes of Ship City, and hunt for the keys that unlock the mystery of the Lost Horizon.
Coriolis: The Great Dark is the second edition of Coriolis - The Third Horizon, our very first science fiction RPG. The rules have been updated and further developed, the setting is new and advances the timeline of the universe.
THE GAME WORLD
Coriolis: The Great Dark launches you into a desolate part of space - The Lost Horizon. Here, a fledgling human civilization who fled war tries to stake out a new life in a harsh environment.
You live in the meandering asteroid-metropolis of Ship City and you are employed by the Explorers Guild to undertake dangerous expeditions.
In Ship City, you will take on missions and investigations to help your guild and build your crew’s reputation with the other major players of the city - the Navigators, the Machinists, and the Gardeners.
Delving into the ruins on desolated moons or other star systems in search of resources and artifacts will bring out the best of you and your crew. Together, you will need to overcome physical obstacles, face creatures from the Dark and endure the ubiquitous Blight.
YEAR ZERO ENGINE
The rules of Coriolis: The Great Dark are based on the latest iteration of acclaimed Year Zero Engine, used in award-winning games such as ALIEN The Roleplaying Game, Blade Runner The Roleplaying Game, Tales From the Loop RPG, and The Walking Dead Universe Roleplaying Game, but specifically tailored for this new game.
THIRD PARTY LICENCE
As part of the new release, we will create a new free and open license for third party content for Coriolis: The Great Dark. The previous game Coriolis - The Third Horizon will not be developed further, and the old books will not be reprinted, however an Open License will be created so that all you fans of the previous game will be able to create and publish new modules. Using these licenses, all creators will have an irrevocable, worldwide, and royalty-free right to freely create, produce and sell content and expansions for both games and their settings.
ABOUT THE GAME CREATORS
Kosta Kostulas, Nils Karlén and Martin Grip, Free League co-founders, take lead in designing the game with a new version of the award-winning Year Zero Engine created by Tomas Härenstam. Original artwork comes from lead Blade Runner RPG, Alien RPG and Coriolis - The Third Horizon artist Martin Grip and graphic design by Christian Granath.

I hope this sets the template for all ‘second edition’ Free League books - books that push the game forward in some way rather than simply a rehash and tweaking of a previous rulebook. This way I can be excited about committing to the next version rather than dismayed. Hopefully MYZ and Symbaroum et all next editions will be propelled similarly by forward movement in the game background. Long and short of it, I’m excited for this new edition of Coriolis.

So overall I think that was highly informative - I now have a really good grasp of the intent of the new game and indeed some hints at how it adapts the old ruleset for the new setting. The most clear thing that came through both interviews is how excited Costa and Nils are for this, it felt like a real labor of love moment. I like the idea of the smaller campaigns focussed around solving a mystery. I also like the idea of the Base Ship / exploration divide. It feels very much like a game who is building on the Mutant logic and extending it to space. I understand the ship is not an Ark, but it is a home base where players will be dragged into factional and political interactions it seems. When not on the ship they will go forth to solve fundamental mysteries of the setting and recover supplies for both their own and the ship's survival. I love the idea of The Terror as the inspiration, the long journeys into the unknown and the sense of isolation and to large extent self reliance that drives, the comments for Gear from Costa were telling in this regard making it clear if you can't find it you will need to kitbash it. I also really like the idea that the Darkness Between the Stars is still around in this setting, creating the idea of lingering forces from past civilizations which are really here to destroy you all. Overall sounds like a game well worth playing, I think the its a return to the heartland of Free League (With a combination of Mutant and Coriolis vibes) using their own very exciting IP. I am all in on this one

Spaceship-City sounds like a great home base for a “west marshes” style game

Great new format (Ellinor is a wonderful host!) and great content (I'm very excited for Coriolis TGD). One point of constructive criticism - could you please add chapters to this video and future videos? Makes it hard to watch and come back to (for reference) without them. Tack!

Yeah I did that more than a few times with the old FL Updates, but I really don't want to keep doing that myself!

Sounds cool, but also sounds like Forbidden Lands in the Coriolis space system style. I really like Forbidden Lands, but yet.... I'm excited and we'll see! Thanks for all the info!! 👊🤓

This sounds intriguing; I'm looking forward to the Kickstarter. As an aside, I'm not a fan of reading through the Coriolis: The Third Horizon books due to the graphic design - I find it too dark and cluttered. Normally, I get most RPG books in PDF for use on my iPad, but the art, graphic design, and layout of Vaesen, Tales from the Loop, and The One Ring are so nice, clean, and elegant that I bought the hardback books - they are quite nice to physically hold and read through. (Sometimes I just look through them for the design and presentation 😁) I hope this new Coriolis project, while different from the fantasy theme of these lines, still incorporates some of their Free League Publishing elegance.

I'm so excited to play this! Will there be solo rules? Sounds like it would work well for forbidden lands style solo rules or twighlight 2000.

So... Why Coriolis ep. 1 is broken? It really don't provide enough things for PC development? And why does the main campaign breaking the game? Without spoilers please, as I still hope to play it someday.
@jahoodunrama
@jahoodunrama 7 месяцев назад
It's not broken, the XP cost for leveling up skills/gaining talents is just a tad too low and only becomes apparent in longer games or games that have a lot of sessions. XP is dealt out at the end of each session. There are a few modifications that the community prefers.

Indeed, Coriolis 1e isn't broken. But you're right that the Mercy of the Icon campaign changes the Third Horizon setting. So moving this 2e into a different place to make it work chronologically is really a very logical thing to do from a game design perspective. You could continue playing the 1e after the events of the campaign, but we won't be getting any official material for it. This 2e ruleset might even work quite well for it. I won't say more as it might spoil the 1e.

The new game is becoming more and more disappointing. It doesn't look interesting at all. And it’s very disappointing that because of this they will stop supporting Coriolis: The Third Horizon. I was hoping for new mechanics, mysticism expansion books, and new campaigns, not to mention a second edition. I don't like Free League's policy of endlessly creating new games, neglecting its old ones.

I hate to say it, but that's how to thrive in this industry. Supplemental products are just not as lucrative from a business perspective. What they will be doing is opening up the licence beyond the Workshop on DTRPG though so that those of us in the community can keep building on The Third Horizon (and The Great Dark too). It will be similar to the dragon bane open licence.

"neglectic it's old ones". Much like how not every videogame is a live service forever game, not every ttrpg is a game that will forever be expanded upon by the devs. If you're so desperate to see more stuff for the game, start making it.
@erikriggiola6780

Completely disagree. This is not throwing aside the old game it is adding a whole new era to it which is brilliant. The idea of capturing the universe after 200 years and encountering the 4th/Lost Horizon is incredible. The other game is still right there if you want it. There's a ton of stuff for it at Drivethru rpg in addition to everything directly from Free League. And you can homebrew to your heart's content. I don't understand your disappointment at all. This is all great news.
