I do remember years ago, while the show was running, I was living in a fairly small town during an election, and the slogan for one of the people running was “a local candidate for local people.” I never knew if they took inspiration from the show, or just didn’t realise.

I'm obsessed with The League of Gentlemen. Lol The League are Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith and Jeremy Dyson. They all wrote the show but we mainly only see Steve, Reece and Mark playing the majority of the roles. Jeremy Dyson considers himself a writer over an actor. He only has blink-and-you'll-miss-it parts. Obviously, you'll need to watch Psychoville and Inside No. 9. Sooooo unbelievably good.

I'm so glad you finally got around to TLoG. One of my favourite shows ever, and such an amazing achievement for all of them. It's a classic of British comedy, and yes, weird as all hell, lol. The League has four members, three of whom play most of the characters:- Steve Pemberton - Writes and acts. Plays Tubbs the wife in the local shop. Also writes and acts in Psychoville and Inside No. 9. Mark Gatiss - Played both the "burnt boy" and the police officer in the local shop. Also writes for and acts in Doctor Who and Sherlock. Reece Shearsmith - Writes and acts. Plays Edward the husband in the local shop. Also writes and acts in Psychoville and Inside No. 9. Jeremy Dyson - Writes the show, doesn't act, but has a few cameos. There's a lot here referencing other British TV shows, but it's not necessary to get the links, as the comedy speaks for itself.

Once you get League of Gentlemen...you'll never leave! I wasn't into it when it first aired in the UK but a girlfriend bought me the box set of DVDs and I have watched every episode more than once. The level of creativity and writing is fantastic, the characters are frequently based on people they met (eg. The "local shop" was based on a shop they went into where the woman behind the counter was very nervous and mentioned that her husband was upstairs, there are lots of bits inspired by various horror films, too). It's always great to see After Work Reactions react, you really get the more out there British comedies, and League of Gentlemen is pretty far out there!

Pauline is an "agregious" Job Search officer who is obsessed with pens. The vet is a mortal danger to every animal. Edward and Tubbs are brother and sister (married!) who run the local shop and distrust anyone who isn't "local" to the area.
