Did you know you can create leather molds using scrap leather? Check out this week's The Leather Element with Chuck Dorsett to see how it's done! You can simply stack scrap leather pieces to the thickness you need, cut them to shape, and use that to wet mold anything from cell phone cases to briefcase pockets.

Ahhh yes! You begin to reveal the secondary and artistic aspect of raised design molding. Thank you. I have a book cover project on which I want to combine engraving and raised molding in a very special Elk design. I also want to incorporate cut outs that glass gemstones peek through, for lots of sparkle. The first thing I will need to know (I think) is the best thickness of "veg tan" to use. Then I need to figure out which process to do first; the raised embossing, or the engraving. What do y'all think?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 5 лет назад
Hi Daniel, This one is a tough call, but, it sounds like it’s going to be a beautiful project! I might say a 4/5 oz. will work best for the molding and embossing. Without seeing the design I may say form first and then add your embossed image. If you emboss first then the stretching that occurs when forming may pull some of the impression out. See if this helps?

I came to the comments to check on this topic. I've seen a ton of videos on the dyes/stains/antiques/glosses/etc but it's such a pain to go to one video for one thing and another for a different thing. It would be really nice to have one video that covers all of the chemicals. When do you apply antique? Can you redo antique if it doesn't give the right color? When do you apply finishers? Gloss? Oil? How long does it need to dry? How do you touchup something that has bled and faded? How to buff up a good shine? Should you use super shene or something else? Carnauba Creme? Resolene? Mink Oil? Leather conditioner and applications. PS. Huge fan of Weaver and specifically Chuck. He's the reason I got into the craft truth be told. Mild curiosity on the art and finding these tutorials really played a big part in me buying into the craft (and purchasing from Weaver as well

@WeaverLeatherSupply 5 лет назад
Hi Pamela! Nice! Those are going to look great! Upholstery weights are typically 3/4 oz. and there is a wide array of options there. To recover the chairs I would say go with a professional that does upholstery. They have the skill to make it fit nicely and that can be a bit tough. I hope they come out beautifully!

Tooling/stamping and molding leather, is there a way to combine the two without fading and warping your tooling?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 5 лет назад
Hi there! You can combine the two, but you're going to lose some of the definition of your tooling. We have a gun holster video coming out in a few weeks where the holster is basketweave stamped and then molded but we only stamped part of the holster. That video may be helpful for you! Ive only worked with rawhide, does leather set similarly, stay in the shape it is set to? Also is there a difference between this and how the skin has been treated? Thanks
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 5 лет назад
Hi there, If leather is wet molded, then yes, it will stay in the shape it is set to. Veg tan leather is what you would need for molding. Chrome tanned leather is softer and will not mold. Hope that helps!

Hello, I need help. So I have a project where I have to use leather and I want to make a simple moulded pocket for some pencils. However I am required to use a laser cutter. Is leather flexible enough for me to mould it and still have it keep the initial contour it had? It would require a 10mm space for the pencils to fit.
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 5 лет назад
Hi Douglas, Are you asking whether or not you can mold it and then laser cut it? Just want to make sure I'm answering the right questions.
@douglasascencio9140
@douglasascencio9140 5 лет назад
@@WeaverLeatherSupply hello. No I mean to laser cut it first so it's flat and safe and then sew it to the surface where I need it. After that I thought about moulding it but I don't know wether it'll keep it's area once I started moulding the pocket.
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 5 лет назад
@@douglasascencio9140 I am a little unsure of the question but I think I know what you’re asking here. The actual shape of the leather will draw in when you mold it so it’s common to take an oversized cut and mold to the form then trim to final size. In this situation you may be able to mold the leather after sewing. Big Note: If you only have one shot at this I am hesitant to say form after sewing, unless, you have some additional leather that you can experiment with. Since you’re molding pencils and they’re not huge objects the leather will stretch enough for a mold and, when sewn and then formed, the backing or whatever it’s sewn to will give it some body which will help molding and holding the mold. If you want to cut to final and mold before sewing you can cut the pocket to size but make the throat about 1/8” wider on each side. Basically if the pocket is 3” wide by 7” long the bottom would be 3” wide and the top/throat would be 3 ¼” wide (a bit funnel shaped). This will give the throat a little extra room to draw in when molding and, when molded, should come to rest at 3”. The lower end will stretch enough to mold without drawing in so when molded you should have a 3” x 7” pocket. Let this dry completely. Sewing wet leather is a mess and the outcome is awful. See if this helps, or, if I’ve missed the point completely please feel free to add additional questions!
@douglasascencio9140
@douglasascencio9140 5 лет назад
@@WeaverLeatherSupply Thank you so much for the feedback. In the end I used felt for the pocket I had in mind in order to add more variety to the whole thing. Nonetheless I will take on future projects from here on out where I have more time to experiment. I have fallen for leather and I appreciate your advise dearly :) I'll keep on watching your awesome content. Thanks again.

You just changed how i look at shitty pieces of leather
