The 1960s witnessed a thrilling era in motorsports, particularly in the North American open-wheel Can-Am series. Here, car manufacturers were given free rein to unleash their wildest design ideas, pushing the boundaries of speed and performance. In this arena, the McLaren M8 emerged as a dominant force, rewriting the rulebook and etching its name in racing history taking the can-am title 5 years in a row.

I watched many Can Am races in the north eastern US and here in Canada. It was the greatest racing series ever - the sight and the sound was overwhelming. I have been to many Canadian Grand Prix and the spectacle is nowhere the same. The cars were actually violent on track. I was a big McLaren fan - the M8s were my favourite. Long live the memory of the Bruce and Denny Show.

Great video. Back in the day I used to sleep in my van off Hwy 68 in Carmel to watch these beasts drive at Laguna and be the first into the track. What a sound they made as a group and dropping through the Corkscrew. Still have images of this in my mind. Have a photo on my shop wall of the 917-30 winning in October 1973. Mark Donahue driving. Great cars, great memories. One of the best categories Group 7 of race cars. As they say “Thanks for the memories”.

Lucky you to have been able to do that, of all the tracks in the world Laguna is THE track, and it's the corkscrew that sets it aside from all others, an elevation drop equal to a 3 story house that happens so fast racers say it's like driving off the top edge of a 3 story house, I don't know if you've ever heard the story about how the corkscrew came to be but if you haven't look it up, it's a funny story. Being from the east part of the US I've never had the good fortune of seeing a race there, maybe one day but until then it's still exciting to watch on TV.

"Achievement, not years." I live two blocks away from the McLaren facility in Livonia, just outside of Detroit Michigan. Motor City. McLaren. A Legacy of Speed. More than years. An achievement.

I remember these cars when I was a kid, I had an uncle who was involved in those races in the US, and I fell in love with the shapes of their designs. Back then, nothing looked more outerworldly than these cars of Can-Am racing. Great video, my favorite waas the Porsche even though the uncle that I mentioned worked fro McLaren

Vintage racing and events like Goodwood FOS have become a very popular sector of the motorsports world. The more lighthearted atmosphere and accessibility for fans makes it more fun for everybody. I have enjoyed watching the McLarens running at the Goodwood FOS on their RU-vid channel.

An interesting presentation, with much of the narration taken word-for-word from the Wikipedia entry for McLaren "M8A". Also, a couple of corrections: others have already noted here that the Can-Am was NOT an "open wheel" series since that label applies to cars with no fenders, such as Indy and Formula cars. Also, the original Can-Am series from 1966 - 74 never imposed any limits on engine capacity. That happened only when the SCCA Continental Championship for Formula A/5000 cars was converted to a "new Can-Am" starting in 1977, which carried over the F-5000 series limit of 5-liter engines (and 3-liter F-1 engines), but that's not being covered in this video presentation.
