I was 14 or 15 when Rakim dropped. My mind was completely blown. Plus, he was the only brotha BOLD enough to call himself a God at that time, which planted a seed of self knowledge in me way back then. Because to me, if he looked like me, what made him call himself a God? There was only ONE other emcee that was top tier in his own light, and who was even close to Rakim at that time, and that was Big Daddy Kane. But Rakim literally changed the trajectory of rhyming and he is still, in my opinion, light years ahead of many. Just listen to his joint "The Mystery: Who is God" or "Holy Are You" to know what I mean.

The first verse of this song........🤦🏾‍♂️ I don't have nothing else to say.....I think I was 8 the first time I heard my older brother knocking Rakim and his voice and flow alone caught my ear and I had no choice but to accept hip hop....it's always been a battle in my head over who was better between Big Daddy Kane and Rakim..... definitely two of my favorites but Rakim ain't no joke.

No way. I will give props to Kool G Rap and Polo's: Men at Work (completely underrated track). But I don't have any of those guys ahead of Rakim. As a matter of fact- Chuck D, Eminem. Eric Sermon, Big Daddy Kane, Ice Cube, Easy E, Tupac, Kool Moe Dee should supplant anyone on that list, but each to their own.
