Edit: I should mention this is AN ADULT RPG - language is not for kids. I’m sure other games may have used this combat idea - but man it’s almost flawless here with so much nuance, a great idea! Also there is a BIG mechanic I haven’t mentioned because it’s such a fun spoiler. Let me know what you think of this one - I just ordered the physical, always a sign that I enjoyed it! Cheers guys, Mark
Metaphor Refantazio (Atlus/Persona/SMT) use the same type of battle system and sadly I'm pretty sure that every casual reviewer will be like "omg it's so good, it's the first time that we see that". 😅
@@solonepeon5805Nah it's even the contrary. I was surprised to see that they (NISA) kept some 18+ dialogue line from the party member "Aaron". Get ready, he is quite wild ahah. 😁
i got the deluxe edition that has a steel case, a small artbook, a digital soundtrack and of course the game. i cant wait to play through it as i never played any of the games in the series before.
it hasn't been mentioned here but this game has readability issues with its fonts, especially for the shard effects descriptions and other things like book fonts and newspapers
@@degreeskelvin3025 for what it's worth i did try to contact nisa but all i can find is their online store contact support, they did reply that my concern regarding the font issue and readability will be forwarded to the relevant internal team, I'm not gonna hope much though unless a lot of people complained about it on social media
I noticed this as well. It’s not the size that makes it hard to read it’s the font choice. Hopefully this is only in the demo and not the final product.
See, this is why you guys are so important. If not for SwitchUp, i don't think this game would have even come across my radar. I'm playing it now and it's so awesome!! I fight myself to put the controller down when i have to go to work, it's so so good! Thanks SwitchUp❤👍🏾
This is one I had to pickup on PS. To worried about switch cut backs months ago when I ordered the collectors edition. Man I really love to have RPGs on the Switch. Maybe in the future.
Idk if you played Xenoblade but that game started breaking up everything for others to follow & make different changes to the old formula as well. But for me XB 1 I love the most out of the rest.
The new Metaphor game from Atlus is literally this idea but the transition from action combat to turn based isn’t as smooth as trails here.

This one definitely goes into my endless RPG wishlist. Although, having not played previous titles may make me favour other games. I hate the feeling of missing out.
@degreeskelvin3025 not true at all. It's all interconnected. BUT this would be an okay title to jump into. As this takes place in Calvard rather than where cold steel took place. But they are absolutely related and nearby one another.
I had issues reading the some of the text in hand help. Too small for my old eyes I guess. How common is it for games to add patches to increase the size of texts?
i heard this game was pretty standalone but the main character looks like those from trail into reverie so its confused me if this game heavily connected to previous entry
All of the Legend of Heroes games are very interconnected, but you can still enjoy them without playing previous games. The story won't hit as hard and you'll miss references though.
I disagree slightly about the story not hitting as hard, they've intentionally given more than enough information about key events that it really does hit as hard plus it's all about those characters that you're only introduced to here. Mark
the turnbased combat is fantastic , but I was very underwhelmed with the field combat. Its so barebones that it doesnt feel that much different from the previous system where you 1 hit them from behind to get an adantage. Now you just hit them a couple of more times to get the same advantage effect.
Because it was never meant to be a fully action RPG. The field combat was a slightly more involved mechanic that makes the player work more to get that advantage. Trails is still a turn based RPG at heart
@@ThangDamMinh Yes its a more roundabout way of getting the advantage to start the real combat. There is really no argument to not set this setting to easy. ITs a far cry from the seamless integration of action and turnbased combat that FF7 remake and Rebirth has.
Knowing trails, there definitely will still be some things mentioned about Reverie. But they will most likely keep it to the minimum. I will still recommend finishing Reverie if you can.
@@golfvdubb absolutely not. That game is specifically designed as the final game for both arcs. You are expected to know pretty much everything about previous games. It spoils arguably the most out of every game in the series.
Actually the visuals and performance don't look that bad, basically the same as the older titles already on Switch. Sure it doesn't take advantage of the new engine like it does on other systems, but it looks fine to me.
It's the combat system that they changed it up. Where you can do both Turn based and action. Which there's not many if there are any games that do this. Which makes it a unique rpg.
Hi, a long time ago, I suggested including information about the option to change the X and Y axes (I remember you even commented on this in one of your videos). I just wanted to thank you for adopting this suggestion and sticking to it. Best regards!
I am disappointed with visuals as this was an impulse buy for switch. I have come to terms with the fact that new releases I should now get for my ps5 as this suffers visually on switch. But I like the story and gameplay and will now play in handheld for better visuals.
Damn, it's scary to think that I have the whole Trails series before I can play this... Low res textures don't bother me, I'm playing the Cold Steel on PS Vita
I saw the gameplay, and it reminded me of Xenoblade, so I was immediately interested. Not enough RPGs really take risks and break new ground these days in my opinion. Perhaps this game will be worth a look.
If the next switch is backwards compatible won’t it fix framerate and graphics issues because it’ll be more powerful and would be able to handle these games better?
I already want Crimson Sin/Daybreak II just because it has more side content to last. Don’t get me wrong. This is amazing. Trails Through Daybreak is Amazing 8.7 out of 10 to me, almost a 9/10. But Crimsom Sin/Daybreak II looks so much more package and complete with content to enjoy. From what I’ve seen Daybreak/Crimson Sin is between 9.5-10 without playing it myself.
Probably the best in the series for newcomers, which i am so glad i can reccomend them finally. There is boatloads for those who have kept up since sky too though. Lots of rich history and lore that is incredibly grounded beyond any other jrpg series ive played.
i 100% completed the first 2 cold steel games... stuck on CS3 the story is just a slow grind i think i burnt myself out with the first 2 haha i like the faster pace combat option as i find the normal combat too slow of a grind.
This looks like a great game for me - love the detective aspect of things especially. Adding it to the wishlist for sure, but at some point I have to start considering the size not just of my backlog, but of my Trails backlog. I love a good JRPG, but why do they have to be so long? 😛
Thanks for the review. Glad to hear the game is really good. Hopefully it does well. If anyone wants the physical version, get it. History dictates it will not be available for too long as NIS titles seem to be hard to find after 8-12 months.
After playing through Reverie on Switch I had a feeling this, while playable, may not be ideal on Switch which is why I've known for couple of months that I'll be picking this on PC. Great series!
Tried the demo on switch and the graphics and animations were distractingly bad. Gonna give the PS4 (Pro) version a shot, seemes like it could be good but the art style and presentation are not sitting well with me atm.
As long as I can have it portable due to my living situation that’s all I care about. Yeah I could have got it to PS5 but switch is always my first choice.
I’m sad this series is almost coming to an end. I hope Falcom starts another long story game series. There is nothing like following a worlds story for a decade
thankfully he's not the bleeding heart rean is. rean was annoying it also annoyed me that despite all of the huge battles taking place in the cold steel series, hardly anyone ever dies. in this game there was an unexpected death right at the start, and at the end of chapter 1 there was an extremely unexpected death, of someone i expected to either join your party or at the very least pop up throughout the game. it adds so much, not knowing that everyone is safe from death like they were in cold steel. definitely prefer the combat of cold steel 4 and reverie, but i really like that there are deaths in this game that really adds a lot more intensity and emotion to the story.
@@Jack_80 cool guy Van isn’t annoying? He’s an edgy douche who would leave you out to dry if he wasn’t compensated for something. Loves his car more than his relationship with others. Rean was easier to put up with, and maybe that’s because he actually had a decent backstory. Daybreak is overhyped compared to previous arcs anyway. It feels like it was written by someone with a severe lack of interest. You start the game, and what happens? You collect the first Genesis. Great, now you're told that you will be doing this seven more times. Every story beat, every build-up, every moment of tension is basically pre-ordained to be tied to collecting the next Genesis. What a snooze fest. Oh and another mafia to deal with, that hasn’t been done before. Then finally, there’s the fact that I just want to get enveloped in a fictional world and here I am listening to something like “white supremacy” or some anti-immigrant faction in the game during some car ride. Idk about you man, but I’m not the biggest fan of integrating real world problems into fictional worlds. That’s what we have real life for. Literally. It gets exhausting.
All Trails games' story are connected but since it's not reasonnable to ask people to play all previous games to understand anything in the newly released game, they organised the Trails games into story arcs of two to four games. Each with its own cast of characters and happening in its own geographical area. Each story arc's first game is designed as a point of entry for newcomers. And this game just happen to be the first in the current story arc. I can't speak for this game specifically, but when I played Trails from Zero (4th game in the series but first game in its arc), I never felt lost. Any relevant info related to past events was clearly explained with just enough info to carry on without spoiling all the details outright so you can still go back to the previous games without knowing their whole plot.
Sometimes I can't get to the comments in time and we get spammed or something silly pops up. If you can karate kick that out of existence if/when it would be most appreciated. Mark
Game is been delivered tomorrow but I'm playing through cold steel 3 and then 4 and reverie before playing it but It's ok because may be when I'll catch up they'll released daybreak 2 and I won't be waiting to much 😂
