I enjoyed this one the most out of the Legend trilogy. Tho, Dawn of the Dragon does have the up of playing with a friend. Also, realizing that these games had a peanut budget makes me appreciate them even more.
Well it's speculation but it would make sense as to why they were so cheaply made (reskins, same models etc). DotD at least will be a bit of a change up! :)
it's a shame these games didn't have a higher budget. all the reskins bothered me as well and it makes you think what could have been if they just had some more money to work with. the gameplay suffers because of it and it's wasted potential but at least the story still shines through.
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does anyone know a tool to get back into an instagram account?? I was dumb lost the password. I would love any tricks you can offer me.
Finally someone who feels the same way I do about this game! I criticized this game A LOT in my playthrough, basically hitting the same notes you did and people hated me for it. If it helps, you'll (hopefully) LOVE Dawn of the Dragon! It's genuinely fantastic!
Tealgamemaster You’re right, this game certainly has a lot of flaws. And it seems that the more diehard fans prefer to overlook them in favor of one factor or another (probably the story). But I know, for myself at least, it’s the pain of the poor game design and the wonderful (if poorly executed) story that bring me back to this game. I want to convince myself that it’s better than it is, because I really appreciate the underlying spirit, but the reality of the game is still hard to swallow (the beautiful music and downer ending only exaggerate the conflict). I can’t wait until the DotD video, and I’m excited as ever for more content regarding Spyro, new or old!
spyro encasing himself in crystal in the ending was him using a time fury. my guess is that time manipulation is seen as another "element" to master, and with each element there is a fury. a move used in dire situations. whether spyro knew he could use a fury ability with time or not, he had prior experience with time manipulation and the only way he could save everyone was to freeze themselves in time essentially, safe from harm. it may not make much sense- but think of it this way. sure, spyro didn't have the fury taught to him. but how do you think it went for the first dragon to ever use a fury? it wouldn't have been taught to them. the only moment a move for that is called for is when things become too rough to handle and said dragon is using all they got left to keep going.
To be fair now I think about it (always happens after I finish a video lol), Ignitus did mention in ANB that in times of crisis Spyro's abilities would reawaken due to the blood of his ancestors flowing through his veins. Or something like that. So I suppose it's not tooooo far-fetched but still it's very convenient, and a Deus Ex Machina!
It's also probably due to something tied in with the first game. In a crisis he given power by the ancestors to over come it. I forget the exact wording.
Truth be told, I still have a great attachment to this trilogy, not because I grew up with this series, but because of all the limitless POTENTIAL this series could have! And there is seeds for these amounts of potential (music, some bits of lore, voice acting). Unfortunately, this series couldn’t get off the ground simply because of how limited the actual games were! I can applaud Krome for trying their damndest when their development time was so rushed and sparse. It isn’t hard to see either since each game was released each year (almost like the problem Insomniac had by releasing their game consistently each year). It always makes me want to see what a actual Legend game would be like that had all the budget and time they need. But I think I we’re way past that now, but it’s still fun to imagine all the potential this series could have. Who knows, maybe later on the next new OG Spyro could make some sort of continuity to Legend series, that would be a thrill for me personally. But regardless, it’s still fun to dream of what could’ve been!
If it had 5x the budget it could've have been sooooooo good. By the way, thank you for that budget info! :D Makes me sad thinking this got no help money wise but Skylanders is a thing...
Tbh I really think that the original three LOS games need to be remade first before even thinking about future instalments. And by remade, I don't mean a HD remaster, I mean a reboot from scratch using the latest triple A technology and a bigger budget, changing elements of the story that don't work (that is, if you're going to stick to the basics of the original story and not write another one) and adding in some new ones. Because if you're going to make a triple A game that's a continuation of the story of three games that are (let's face it) for the most part, mediocre, then the player has to get through three games that probably won't be as enjoyable as the fourth one (that is, if the fourth one is actually better.)
I'm quite aware that opinions are subjective. What I meant by mediocre was that the games were, overall, OK (the third entry being the best), not terrible, but not great either. The reason for my opinion is this: if you compare, say, the first game with, say, 'Tomb Raider: Legend', a game released during the same year, the level of storytelling is clearly better in the latter, with superior voice acting and facial animations. So playing through the first LOS game after playing through Tomb Raider would expose the lack of conviction from the characters in Spyro. However, Tomb Raider most probably had a much higher budget than Spyro, so the developers really had to make some sacrifices in the creative department.
40:40 Actually, I think having a form of adult Cynder works here. Before entering the battle a voice tells Spyro: “Expose your heart to summon ghost, then face alone what you fear most.” It’s likely that Spyro’s greatest fear, based on that message and her foreboding presence in A New Beginning, is the adult/dark form of Cynder. As for the weird color change thing the boss does, I would assume that’s part of the “test” The Chronicler gave you to ensure it was Spyro who came to him and that his powers had been fully restored. This is only a theory, but I think it makes some sense
What I didn't know Mae Whitman the voice of Katara from Avatar also played Roxy from the Scott Pilgrim movie so that means I hear Katara call someone a lazy ass lol
You have a natural cadence you put off in your videos. It is something that cannot be taught. You deserve to have a bigger audience. You explain everything in a perfect way. Watched all the other Spyro history videos, but due to how great and consistent you are, had to sub. Best of luck in the future for you!
I had quite the history with this game. Watching this video gave me so much nostalgia! I got this game ever since I was 7 and I never finished it due to my Wii breaking down shortly after I reached the final boss area. This was my very first and the only Spyro game I ever played in my life. I fell in love with the dark atmosphere and the soundtrack of this game and to me it is still a good game no matter what others say about it. I wasn't aware of Dark Spyro until some point like 2014 when my interest in Spyro suddenly rises again.
I got this a year after I got the first one. I've played it twice all the way through and liked it well enough. The only thing I couldn't stand was the fight with Gaul because it took me so many tries. And I loved the music during the end credits. When I first heard it, I liked to imagine all the side characters from the previous game (dragon masters, Kane, etc.,) looking up at the sky at the mountain's destruction and wondering what had happened.
That ending really got to me, and I think it's because of the wonderful music. Only thing that bothered me at the end was not seeing anything more of the Elder Dragons. :/
What the biggest problem you have with the legend of spyro trilogy. Personally I didn't like how it didn't have many of the character from the original games that's why I enjoyed playing dawn of the dragon because Hunter was there 😊 but I was upset we didn't see his scream from enter the dragonf ly.
I think my biggest problem is just the style of the game. I've grown up with the originals and they hold a special place in my heart because they're good mindless fun. The Legend of Spyro trilogy often comes across as too dark and serious for what I'm used to with the purple dragon. Also I don't like how Spyro is now this unique purple dragon and saviour of the world with powers like the Avatar, when before he was just a normal teenage kid who wanted to go to Dragon Shores. 😂
So that's why they were in crystal in the beginning of Dawn of the Dragon, I did wonder. I'd suggest having the subtitles on for that game as well. Some of the monsters 'talk' but it's in grunts and such, and one characters voice is so altered, I had a hard time understand them.
I remember when I played this game over a decade ago. I managed to brute force my way through it without using the dragon time, because the chronicler said it was for only the most dire circumstances. I had assumed that this was serious, and that I shouldn't touch it, only using it for the few puzzles where it was absolutely mandatory. After completing the game, I realized the difficulty was scaled for you to actually use it regularly in fights, and I had just made it so much harder for myself for no reason. Fun times.
Oh I had to find every little trick I could. The section you cheated for, I had found out you could glide back to an earlier platform and just pepper the enemies with attacks from range safely. I think one of the crystals would respawn too. It was a slow process.
Thank-you so much for being the Chronicler on this retrospective, I really enjoyed it. I also really, really appreciate the time and effort you put into the play-though, but also the editing, pacing and narrative. It was a real treasure to discover, and has meant more to me than collecting all the quills. I may have snorted coffee at some of the puns. Your comments to combat and pacing, all of them, are very fair… to why this is hard to play, and why it was not a favorite, that was on my watch so that one is on me. I wish looking back we had done more to make this a classic that was a real charm to play. I wish you’d been there at the time to be loud about this play-testing, though… you know.. there were people around us supporting us being loud about the same things. Trust me; if I could forward this video to myself then now, I would! ... learnt so much not just from making this game, but reading the comments over the years across forums and such. This piece does a wonderful job highlighting the shortfalls (long-falls) and positives in a very clear way - that I hope reaches some platform designers today about also understanding what not to do, as much as what to do. Thank-you to everyone who has commented below from playing it. Did take a while to read every comment, but it was a lot of fun. To those that cherish it - that’s all we wanted to achieve, to those that didn’t enjoy it - I hope there were other games you had that you did cherish, and sorry the mark was missed on this one. I know in this era each disc into the console was a solid chunk of investment and commitment. I am still immensely proud of what the development teams and publishing teams achieved. To everyone from the development and publishing teams who’s still here - if you see this. Hugs. @Toridori.. this is the best review of this work I’ve seen to date, and watched it with my girls. That was probably a better experience than playing the game with them.
I honestly love the end credits songs for TEN and DotD. This Broken Soul would probably have to be my favourite, though. It seems to be just a bit more enjoyable than Guide You Home.
So many puns in this video! Also, I really enjoyed it. It may be almost an entire hour long but I sure as heck didn't hesitate clicking on it to watch it all. Watching the History videos before this one, I knew it was going to be good
I enjoyed this one. I've heard people say it's too hard. But I felt like it was a decent challenge. Didn't feel like it was as easily broken as the first game (basically every fight just ended up as knocking enemies off with electric breath)
Personally, I would suggest you play that one in co-op. It makes the puzzles a bit more fun and you wouldn't have to switch a billion times. Plus, seeing as the whole game is driven by both Spyro and Cynder together, it feels better to have two players in.
@@KatyaXx0 same for me actually. I never actually liked dawn of the dragon because i got more bored with it in second playtrough. When you played it once on 100% you played it all, the awe goes away and i got bored cause of it. Which for some reason i did not have in the first 2 keeping that awe and finding out neet little things every playtrough i did of it ever since i was a kid.
This was among my favorite Spyro games ever ... My favorite abilities in this game is the Dragon Time and the Convexity breath ... Creativity at its finest ! 🐉⏳
3:56 Just wanted to point this tidbit out there. In the New beginning, while Spyro is in the convexity, you actually CAN hear spyro’s name being whispered as you try to get near Cynder. It’s rather creepy and (of course) it’s confirmed to be the dark master calling out to Spyro.
I personally loved the endless waves of bad guys in this game, and I never found it repetitive for some reason. That part that you said was your least favorite where you had to use the cheat... I love that part! Love your vids by the way, a nice trip down memory lane.
This was my favorite game on the wii when I was little. I don’t remember having as much trouble as you did, I do remember going ape shit (no pun intended) every time I died, lol. That huge fight in the well of souls was actually one of my favorite parts. Maybe little me was much more hardcore then me now, cause I can’t beat it today lol
In the multiple enemy waves area in the Mountain, just stand on the platform next to the main one and keep firing the electric balls. You won't ever get damaged at all.
Thank you for taking the time to go this horific game haha. I played this when i was like 5 and broght back some good childhood mermories and loved every bit off it even the pirtate part lol. Looking at it now and i dont remember the combat being soo bad but it was enjoyable. Again thank for bring back a part of my childhood which i would have not see again.
14:46 - 46:37 Its a shame that no one had discovered the infinite health and magic codes at the time that this video was made. Would've made things a lot more bearable.
Haha! another fellow TLoS fan who also watched Totally Spies! :D I used to love that show when I was younger and would watch it whenever it aired on one of the television sets that I had access to with cable.
My dad got me this game as a kid. I was really bad at it, couldn't get out of the temple. I just ran back and forth through the already cleared areas and found you could glitch the tutorial into starting again.
New format is excellent, awesome video, thank you for making it, I didn't have the chance to play this as a kid so this was really cool, keep it up, can't wait for your Dawn of the Dragon video
The Elemental Dragon (Cynder Reskin) also sorta makes sense from a story standpoint: Before entering the fight, the magical voice tells Spyro to face what he fears most. Spyro's biggest is Cynder becoming evil again.
7:53 That’s why I thought Cynder’s original voice sounded so familiar! Okay so when I was younger, Cynder had a familiar voice (similar to Numbuh 5 from Codename kids next door) and now knowing that Cree Summer played Cynder in the first game makes so much sense since Cree played Numbuh 5 in Codename Kids Next Door 🤔
Mae Whitman also voices a character form the disney TVA 2020 cartoon show The Owl House named Amity. ...and Gaul used the word amity to describe Spyro and Cynder's friendship in the cutscene before the final boss in this game.
You know I really like these videos, I've never been a big fan of the Spyro gameplay, I think mostly because it feels like fetch quests and a collectathon so don't really like, but I love these stories summaries, that and you talk about all of the elements including gameplay music voice acting story writing Etc you're doing a great job
I beat this game like 10 times and I've had it for 3 years- The spot with all those ox and undead enemies in the mountain of Malefor part just before the last cutscene pissed me off so much. I wanted to throw my Wii out the window XD
Your experimented format for this video, I think, went a lot more smoother than your A New Beginning review. The flow of this video, I think, would make more sense to people that have not watched/played this game (although, when you were discussing the "Dreamtime" areas, I thought you went a little ahead of yourself by discussing all the elements... but thats just my opinion; not the mention you essentially spoiled the game for yourself by using that Dark Spyro cheatcode but I guess I can't blame you for that after looking at that little fight there). When you review Dawn of the Dragon, you should perhaps use this same format. Tis my opinion though and I have not read up on anyone else's opinion on this new format of yours. (subscribed too, by the way :3)
Yay I'm glad you thought it worked! I will be continuing with this format as it was so much better to edit and a lot more fun. Yeah I spoiled things with Dark Spyro but I didn't know how else to say I got through that bit.. xD
Great review! As for David spades part as sparks. A really REALLY long time ago I heard the creators hated working spade, he wasn’t used to voicing characters in videos games so he was often arguing with the creators and acting rude. I wish I could remember where I heard this, it was from one of the animators though.
YES, I did exactly the same thing to complete the game. I got stuck on the boss in the first area (laugh if you will, I was 10), abandoned the game for a few years, came back to complete it with the Dark Spyro cheat because my life felt incomplete if I completed the 1st and 3rd game but not the 2nd. Haven't touched it with a stick since then and I only vaguely remember the whole thing.I absolutely LOVED DotD though.
He looks slightly better and easier for the eyes in DotD, unless you play on the ps2 version, then there's this weird glitch where he'll turn into Quasimodo for 1 cutscene. I'm serious!
I personally love Eternal Night. In comparison to A New Beginning, I find it to have way more interesting setpieces and environments, I like the introduction of the Dragon Time mechanic, and I adore the darker story and how well it runs with it (especially in comparison to other platform series that attempted darker stories at the time, i.e. Shadow the Hedgehog). And as someone who loves difficult games, Eternal Night struck a chord with me. But yeah, while I disagree on this game being bad, I can at least appreciate the fact that you're not constantly comparing it to the classic trilogy, but instead measuring it on its own merits, unlike what I've seen so many other, somehow bigger content creators do. Underrated RU-vidr, fr. Keep it up
I love the new format being presented in the video. Your humor was able to get a few chuckles out of me, the charismatic personality of yours was priceless and to top it off, I can actually relate to you on a few moments. The game however, is a little unfair at first with the hit boxes( I loathe the bad doggos) But what really broke my sanity and patience was that platform in the Well Of Souls. I cheated with Dark Spyro and felt somewhat better but still annoyed...... And to be honest here, I freaking love the last song ‘This Broken Soul’ as I just feel like I’m going to cry. I’m very excited to see your thoughts on ‘Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon’ in the future. Fantastic Job!
Thank you Phoenix Dragon, I'm glad you liked the format. :D Glad I wasn't the only one to cheat in this game either, hehe.. And that song is one of my favourites now, from any Spryo game. Having the instrumental version play during those last few moments of the game killed me inside. I was surprised that a game that caused me so much hassle could still get that reaction out of me. :(
im surprised the button spider creatures you need to ground pound in the white isles didnt get mentioned, although might just be that the guy i watched play it kept forgetting he had dragon time through out the game
I agree with you and many other commentors. This trilogy definitely brought a new light to Spyro that I feel would of had a lot of potential if more time and effort went into it. I realize too that the games were only really given a year between release dates and that only allowed for so much to be executed. Still impressed with that they managed to pull off though. I hope so as well that with the original Spyro being brought back into spotlight, that it may lead to revisiting this side of him some day. In my personal opinion in regards to this trilogy. it definitely got better as it went on. The first one while strong in storyline and introducing all these new concepts for Spyro definitely was lackluster in the gameplay department. Too repetitive, level. designs were interesting upon first play through, but it got boring as the levels dragged on too long without bringing anything new to the table. I loved the idea to evolve breathe abilities and actually have a more combative vs. collection demanding approach, but at this point I really only can praise the first game for the story and what it tried to show. The second game definitely brought more to it especially in regards to making the gameplay a little more intriguing and challenging and actually forced you to start using strategy and timing to get through some of the levels. The pacing felt better with a more captivating hook in the story when real conflict became apparent. Lastly the third game was genuinely incredible. The Co-op and free flying were great add ins. Plus there was so much more you could do with more breath abilities than before rather than just aim and shoot. The play styles were different between levels and that really helped add the spice that the first two games were lacking. It brought upon just enough challenging and itneresting moments to make it worth while for not only the first playthrough, but for many following. Really it fell short for me because well, it was too short!!! However with the time the developers had, they still pulled off a great end to the trilogy. Overall i really can hope that this side to Spyro can be revisited with new developers who can put more time and effort into it. Otherwise I'll just continue to dream about what it could of been.
This game gave me a rage that lasted several months after I had given it back to the store. It was so difficult! and at that point in time, I had faced some of the hardest bosses ever in gaming and it was still too hard for me. I ended up watching a playthrough to get the lowdown on the story instead plus wikia.
So, about the strafing battles, if you hold the ranged attack, you actually shoot further, making it easier to hit without waiting for them to close in.
@@ToridoriGaming i dont blame you. Ive had the game for many years and out of the trilogy i finished External Night last bc its that bloody hard. I fell to myself to death as well.
The Legend of Spyro The Eternal Night was personally one of my favorite games of all time. Although it lacked a lot of things like the Soft locks and the Painfully dreadful fights. I can't let myself stop enjoying it. The soundtrack also, I've been listening to it for over 50 hours I know that for sure. I sleep with it to calm myself, It's too good. Dawn of the Dragon even got better music that's so calming. Although Eternal night is by far the favorite one in the trilogy. It still can be improved by a heck ton. And from within The soundtrack, one of my favorite songs of all time is there too. Broken Soul. Still after When I first played it and still now. I still tear up from how personal and how I feel with it. It's been there with my for the saddest of times. and I just am in love with the beginning of the song. I could write novels over this game and it's music. But that's how I'll say it. Thanks for making the long review despite all the difficult moments! I loved every single bit of it! even with the critics. And It's all true. I still kinda enjoy the ships part. but Scab is a nightmare nonetheless.
The soundtrack is wonderful for this game, I'd happily spend my time listening to the choir singing, or even This Broken Soul in the credits! DotD should be a treat for the ears then. :) And I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds Skabb difficult! Thought I was bad at the game. >.>
I even cheat at that part too as the difficulty spike at times were bullshit but not with the code, I glided back down to the gems as they respawn every few minutes. I loved the music and the end credits music! I think you'll like the final chapter better Tori! 😁😁
You can technically stun lock enemies in this game by shooting them with ice after comboing them and rinse repeat There's also other various ways to lock and instakill but they require pressing circle and square at the same time at specific points, and switching breaths mid combos while still using circle and square Aka you need to hold the controller awkwardly and have big hands
I used to think I just sucked at games as a kid but the more I’ve looked into the TLOS Spyro trilogy over the years I realize it wasn’t me, the games were just horribly made. Though I went through new beginning not knowing I could upgrade my dragon breaths until the final fight with cynder, so that’s partly on me. I wonder if I would still like these games if I played them now that I have the knowledge that games can be poorly made and it isn’t always my fault that I do poorly sometimes in games. Looking back though I know I really liked the story and I still remember that about the trilogy very fondly. Though Dawn of the dragon was an excellent improvement in the gameplay department. This was a great little retrospective and I really enjoyed it. Ima explore more of your channel, cheers!
I beat this game without cheats. Because I am GUD. Sure, I died about 10 or 20 times on that one part, but eventually I got it. In my OPINION, with more testing, it would be an improvement over TNB, with more jumping and collectables and whatnot.
man I remember the part where you are in the tournament SOOOOOOOOO well... I never beat it back when I was like... 9 years old? but I did like the game back then. I might someday play the legend of spyro games trough but right now not that interested :^) can't wait for a video of the last one tho! It was my favorite one because I had really fun time playing it with a friend
I wanted to like this game when I got it, but I was just filled with frustration while playing it. I couldn't find any of the upgrades that would help improve Spyro's health and magic meter, and I often got one shotted often because of it especially against the bosses. I especially had the hardest time in the pirate arena of all places against the scorpion enemies. The platforming was so terrible especially the part where I had to flip a switch and dragon time across a series of platforms just to pass a gate which I failed often. It also didn't help that the same gate also killed me in one of the attempts. I don't even know how I managed to stay persistent through all that time even when I finished the game. Had I known about the dark spyro cheat, I probably would have abused it more often.
Scorpion enemies are a pain and halfway through I forgot that you need to do the knock up attack and break their defense, so I was stuck on one scorpion fight for 15 minutes! I'm glad I didn't find out about the Dark Spyro cheat until the end, because I DEFINITELY would have used it more... :P
They could of just added a difficulty setting to the Eternal Night, rather than just make the single player campaign flat out hard. Heck they could of added a difficulty setting that the player has to unlock by playing ALL the difficulties, kinda like in Uncharted and The Last of Us
You should try the gba version of this game, it was the first game i ever played in my life. And still the best one i ever played, the art style and soundtrack is amazing. And the combat mechanic is honestly the best i have ever seen in a gba game, i would be very interested in hearing your opinion on the gba version
I only played DotD from this trilogy and have no compulsion to play the other two, haha. Watching your retrospectives, I feel like I haven't missed much. Just even seeing the bits in your videos, DotD was clearly much better designed and put together. Eager to see your retrospective on that one (though of course the OG trilogy is the best).
Wow, this was a MASSIVE improvement over the last video. Seems my comment made quite an impact because almost every issue I brought up there has been adressed. The new structure works fantastically for a game like this, it gives a better view of the game's pacing while the video itself doesn't drag on at all. Finding more unique things to talk about in between bits of story explanation paces the video wonderfully and makes for a much more enjoyable watch. There were still a few issues I'd like to bring up though, since I think everyone can always improve their craft and as someone that makes a (kind of) siimilar type of content to this, I know I'm personally always looking for areas where I can improve. That said, there still could be more actual analysis of the story. You explain what happens throughout very well and without dragging it on for too long but at the same time there was almost no actual analysis of the story's quality. Walking away from this video, I'm kind of left to make my own opinion of the story as if I had played the game myself but without having experienced the game's story in its entirety. As the one anaylzing the game you should be the one to assess the story's quality and explain what makes it good or bad, so more of that would be very welcome. The other major issue I had was tone. You practically call the game garbage at the very beginning but from watching this video (and never having played it myself) I'm left thinking "this looks decent, maybe something I wanna try out". To be fair though, you do go back and say the game was "ok" (albeit just barely) at the end of the video, which is a bit closer to the impression the analysis gave, so maybe that intro bit was just a joke and I misinterpreted it as more serious than it was meant to be. Regardless, I still think you could've done a better job selling just how annoying the game could get, though you didn't do a bad job, I just think it could've been a bit better. One other thing is that when you brought up how ugly the snowy mountain area was, that would've been a perfect time to talk about the game's graphics as a whole which you don't really do anywhere else in the video. Similarly, when you talk about the credits theme would've been a good time to talk about the music and sound design as a whole, but those aren't really major issues since the gameplay and story were clearly the focus of the game and more important to the analysis. Despite my criticisms, this was still a genuinely very well made and interesting video, and I hope to see more like this from you in the future! You've definitely cemented yourself as a new channel I will continuously look forward to seeing new videos from. Can't wait for the Dawn of the Dragon retrospective!
I can't wait to see your reaction on DotD it really is my personal favorite from the trilogy but I do agree eternal night had its flaws but to my 9 year old eyes I loved it (even though I didn't notice the reskins until I got older)
Definitely liking the new format, especially with the puns and jokes. After Dawn of the Dragon, are there any plans on doing the handheld games, or maybe Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure? Maybe a comparison video when Reignited Trilogy comes out? The handheld games complicate the timeline a bit. Spyro: Season of Ice, Spyro 2: Season of Fire, and Spyro: Attack of the Rhynocs branch after Year of the Dragon; Wikipedia desciribes it as an 'alternate sequel' to the original trilogy. I don't remember these games being too long, and could probably be grouped into a single video. There's also Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage and Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy, which seem to have no place in the timeline, and may not even be canon. Then there's Spyro: Shadow Legacy, which is a RPG, and is a sequel to Hero's Tail; since it's part of the original story line, it may be deserving of it's own video. I know nothing about Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure since I never got into Skylanders, so I'm not sure how much of a story there is, or if the story is another reboot or a spiritual successor or something. It'd be interesting to see though, and you make some of the best Spyro videos of all the content creators on here.
I'm happy you mentioned the awesome title music. I LOVE this game's main theme, and the soundtrack is some of the best atmospheric stuff in the series. Y'know that first frozen lake in the Celestial Caves? If you move the camera around, you can see Crash Bandicoot frozen in the ice below. It's a pretty cool Easter Egg. I feel the biggest problem with the game IS the overabundance of stunlock. It could happen in A New Beginning, too, but there weren't anywhere NEAR as many attacks that stunned Spyro in that game, whereas the Eternal Night is riddled with them. Other than a couple of tight platforming moments, those were really the only issues in terms of difficulty I have with the game, and it baffles me at times when people consider this "too hard to be worth finishing" or whatever. I actually prefer Mae Whitman over Cree Summer as Cynder, partly because I think her voice fits the younger yet more withdrawn Cynder better, but also because, well, I'm used to her thanks to Avatar. I feel like the pirate fleet level should have been a flying level, with Spyro chasing after Skabb and weaving through the ships. I'm not sure if you did it intentionally, but you skipped over the part of the exposition where they reveal that the first purple dragon was the Dark Master. Was that intentional? But overall... yeah, Eternal Night is an okay sequel that does some things better and some things worse than A New Beginning. I still think it's criticised a bit more than it should be in the fandom, and I actually prefer it to most of the GBA games (Season of Flame and Eternal Night GBA are the only ones worth playing, IMO). Just Dawn of the Dragon to go now, and... well, I'm gonna have a LOT to bitch about when you get to it.
I would happily have that music play on repeat for a while, so awesome.. though the Malefor in the clouds made me jump! xD I think you're right. I don't mind the enemies hitting me super hard (I should make more use of strafe and dodge after all) but some things I can't avoid, like off camera attacks. So to have for example, the Ravage Rider hit and stun lock me 3 times, taking my health from near full to near empty... that sucks! Oops, I could've sworn I put all the story in. Was that when the Chronicler told him?
@@ToridoriGaming Yeah, during the Chronicler's exposition dump, you skipped the part where he mentions the first purple dragon teaching the apes how to use the gems, which makes Spyro realise he's talking about the Dark Master. Oh, speaking of losing health quickly... Unless you have a maxed out health bar, getting hit by Gaul's final sword dive attack during the first part of the fight is enough to kill Spyro IN ONE HIT. I... found that out the hard way as a kid.
@@ToridoriGaming It's only if the swords themselves hit you. I remember it being VERY strong, at any rate, which I'm fine with due to him being the final boss and leader of the apes. ...Other enemies draining half your health in one hit is not so okay.
"Ghosty wosties" i've been waiting for your review son the legends series and I have my own version of spyro in the works with its own cannon; in said cannon, Toridori, "Ghostywosties" wind up as "reapers"
Which would you rather play again, Enter the Dragonfly or this? For me, while both are bad, I can still find enjoyment out of EtD, while this game is just boring and painfully difficult
I‘ve watched nearly the half of the video now, but i will start my comment now and will finish this after the video. First i have to say, i have The Eternal Night at home, but i never really played it by myself. My dad bought this game when i was in primary school, and then we played it together...or let me say: He played and i watched him playing xD And because i was so young, i really can‘t remember the game, story etc. But i actually remembered a few things, for example the long world with the ships , that ice breath was just amazing and this annoying tree boss. xD :D I think i‘ve had never seen the end of The Eternal Night until this point and yes: There was a little tear in my face too. I also don‘t know if my father ever finished this game. And i have to say, the new format works really well for The Legend of Spyro, great idea! :D
Haha annoying tree boss is the best description. It's always fun to piece together games from your childhood, then you see them again and can be like 'Omg I remember that!' So glad you like the format too. :D
Dark Spyro has more of a laser attack that works better if you hold the button and let it fire as one long beam. In fact if you jump and hold the button you slowly fall to the ground and do massive DPS. so the final boss sending you into the air means way more DPS in the battle. And if you replay the game with the Dark Spyro form that trick works so well bosses die really easily. It's really fun to plow through the game like this.
I only remember that because of my friend Sean doing that and the one time i played the game i did use that trick in the final boss. Because of that trick in the pirate area is a boss you need to work your way down to but if you use this trick you can kill the boss before even landing on the platform. That is how i remember it anyway. The third game also has broken secret dark magic and cheat codes for unlimited magic. But in this game it's all about the laser DPS. So air attacks are better because it also locks on a bit so you just ride off this death beam DPS that is really unbeatable. We played the game on the Wii but it looks to be the same framework so the trick would have likely worked for you. Dark Spyro is busted. The third game we also played on the Wii so you have one crazy game ahead of you. But i find it really fun. The magic is really nice in that one in my opinion.
One thing that upset me is that the end of this game hints towards the facts that Hunter was supposed to find them encased in the crystal not enemies. Like I feel like the start of the next game was supposed to look very different.
I really enjoyed this vid! Personally I've always just skipped Eternal Night, I only managed to beat it once. For me Eternal Night is a crucible for players. If you can soldier through it then you deserve Dawn of The Dragon, which is my favorite of the trilogy.
I’m a few months late on this, but I just watched this video and wanted to chime in after seeing the scores the game was given at the end - I had both the PS2 and GBA versions growing up, and of the two, the GBA was s o much better than the console versions. It’s been a long time, and that combined with my poor memory from ADHD makes it hard to remember any specifics about it, but like the first game’s GBA version, Eternal Night on the GBA was a side scroller. The difficulty, at least as a child, was tricky at times, but not completely unreasonable like the console version sometimes felt like... and in the end, the GBA version was the one I ultimately saw to completion. To this day, I haven’t beaten my old PS2 copy of Eternal Night, and even with the temptation I felt watching this, I find the urge to pull out my PS2 and try it again overridden by the urge to pull out the GBA version, slap it into the GB Player I picked up last week, and see how it runs on a full screen, rather than the tiny GBA SP I grew up with.
I can't believe that a big glaring issue like Spyro flying one minute then falling to his death the next gets accepted as normal by the characters in this game.. I cannot wait for DotD! xD
I remember I really liked the legend of series when I was little but this game was just so broken and difficult and I wasn't able to beat it until I was older and even then it was incredibly frustrating
I think you summarised everything really well. In some ways it's better than ANB, in some ways it's worse. I prefer ANB because even if it's more repetitive, I'm able to live with just beating up enemies when it's fairly easy as opposed to here while there's more variety there's more frustrating stuff. Also wow, you're right about the voice acting. The only thing that could've made this video better is if you had the screaming ETD Hunter at the end XD
Again, we have a wonderfully unbiased review of a TLoS game, and I really liked it. You yet again, presented the facts, and voiced your criticisms without relying on meaningless hate speech. May I just say, I told you! I told you that you were going to find parts of this game painful, but you doubted me lol. Keep up the good work, and trust me, the last game in the trilogy is much better than this one.
I could imagine lol. Trust me, if you were to make a seperate video just to vent about all the bad things of Eternal Night, I'd be thoroughly entertained.
I actually love this game out of the trilogy. Used to rent the wii version but hated the motion controls so I gotten the ps2 version instead. I liked that the combat was challenging and the puzzles were great. The acting was ok but some of the characters were annoying. But I absolutely LOVE the soundtrack. Dawn of the dragon was ok since I used to have the PS3 version but I think they dumbed it down.
I share pretty much the same feelings and critiques as you've had about T.E.N. I definitely remember feeling very mixed about the game as a whole, but enjoying the general aesthetic greatly. The next game, Dawn of the Dragon, was hit or miss in my opinion, and while it's still enjoyable and playable on your own, getting a friend to 2nd Player with you through the game is all good fun!
A couple of points about the story (and also my THIRD comment on this video - I said I'd have a lot to talk about, didn't I?); The guardians don't know the Chronicler. They've never met him, nor has anyone in the last 1000 years. They don't even know if he really even exists. The final fight in the Celestial Caves being a reskin of Cynder, while lazy from a gameplay/development perspective, makes sense in a narrative one. The SPOOKY ETHEREAL VOICE in that level says you'll have to "face alone what you fear most". So that boss is probably just an elemental spirit that takes the form of the greatest fear of whoever is fighting it. In this case, it takes the form of Cynder's corrupted form, as not only is that what Spyro fears will happen to Cynder if he doesn't save her, but also because he was absolutely terrified of her in A New Beginning at first, and he likely still has some of that fear leftover.
The way they made enemies harder in this game by forcing you to fight huge amounts of them in very tight spaces with little to no breathing room is what irked me the most about it. On top of that, the enemies are even more annoying than the last game because they stun lock you so easily & don't flinch as much to most of your attacks which cancels out your attacks so you can take damage. I would've actually preferred the op electric breath of the last game for this one considering how bullshit the game is with enemies.
