Loving the videos; I would have come to watch this earlier if the title said that it was low% one hit. I don't usually watch vanilla runs of this game but I'm glad I clicked on it anyway.
This game has held up so well. For a game released in 1992, i would be happy with a new zelda game that looks like this. Nintendo did an amazing job. This was a great run of the game aswell, good commentary.
I’m a bit late to the party, but this is such a great category to watch! The runner did awesome in what feels like a really tense run a lot of the way through. A lot of categories of many games are so full of glitches and tricks that you really have to be a fan of that category to understand what’s going on or why some tricks are so difficult. But this OHKO run is so raw you can see how difficult it is with no knowledge of the game! Bravo!
Not even the one playing and my kids and I were cheering and going OH NO - NO NO NO NONO - YESSSSSSSS -- well done Xelna, was a great watch and hope to see more like this!
My uncle had this at his house and id get to play when we visited...it took me weeks to compleate this games...seeing it done in under 2h and with this degree of hardness is mindblowing
14:40 Well I suppose it's better then half the 3D ones where the item's main use is in that dungeon only and maybe as a "key" to 2-3 heart pieces outside of it. Seriously all the items this game are so fucking useful outside of the dungeon you get them in also. Bow: Ranged weapon. Power Gloves: Rocks can be used as a decent strength weapon in addition to moving ones blocking key areas. Moon Pearl: It's automatic, so no need to worry about it. Hammer: Super fucking useful for tons of shit, especially in the randomizer. Hookshot: Cuts down on walking/running and can be used to stun in addition to unlocking new areas. Fire Rod: Instant-kills most enemies from range. Titans Mitt: Really the only exception since it doesn't add anything to the power glove besides unlocking a few areas. Blue Mail: Passive damage reduction. Cane of Somaria: Admittedly this is mostly for puzzle solving, but they put the puzzles everywhere after you get it, can be used as a weapon if needed. Mirror Shield: Passive shield upgrade. Red Mail: More passive damage reduction. I mean compare it to things like the Rod of Dominion, Wind Waker Mirror Shield, or the Spinner (admittedly fun, but never viable for anything save a couple puzzles) among others.
I watched the 100% run Xelna did back in September 2015 (online well after the fact that is) and it was absolutely amazing. Watching this one, I’m even more in awe. Absolutely awesome run, makes me wish I could be present at one of those speed runs. Link to the Past is bar none by favorite Zelda game.
To be fair, most attacks done against Link in this game would kill a person. Bats and Rats wouldn’t, but getting bitten by a giant worm, and getting blasted with a giant red laser would kill a person.
I was just about to make the exact same comment, except I've also been playing a lot of rando. So it's "wow, this game had textboxes?" and "Oh yeah... they don't need to go to Kakariko..."
Great run!! The dude on the couch said at one point that trinexx can’t be defeated in this run without the hammer, but that’s untrue. I did it not knowing I could use the hammer. Haha
Did they do a 1 hit run, on the only version of the game that allows you to be hit in locked animation? That backfired like a rusty blunderbuss, i see. That comeback in the second fight tho.
No, any version of the game will let you get hit and die out of the death mountain cutscene. This version, however, does allow you to get hit after falling in a hole. The other benefits to running on japanese 1.0 vastly outweight that one negative, however.
Trinexx is actually possible with Master Sword, no extra magic, without hammer but it takes near frame-perfect spin-attacks and follow up slashes. I did it in my own Low% because I didn't know hammer was stronger... Wasn't a 1HKO run either, lol. If anyone is inspired to try Low% themselves though, I recommend half magic and mirror shield anyways, at least for a practice run. Half magic not only for Trinexx but includes Magic Powder for some helpful healing, and Mirror Shield because it barely matters except for the minor but annoying laser skips you see in this video.
Low% wouldn't allow for half magic or mirror shield, but it would be a good way to practice the master sword fights if you don't have the practice hack available.
I remember being able to beat this 100% in 6 hours back when it first came out. Before speed runs were even a thing. This is absolutely crazy to see this done in this speed Haha. Very cool!
6:12 "Rats are only supposed to turn counter clockwise unless they run into something" ...last rat in the middle of the last sewer room turns clockwise
I thought Zallard1's blindfold Super Punch Out run in 2014 was the best run ever.... Until now... I am completely speechless on the mad skill it took to complete this run. Well done Xelna!!
I remember playing this again for the first time in ages on my 3DS. I abused the crap out of the save states for the Ganon fight because I was dying to him way too many times. I can't imagine doing this on 1-hit KO and not abusing save states.
They went over it in the run, but the heart containers can't be skipped, even in low%. I believe this is because the crystals/pendants won't drop unless you pick them up.
they didn't really flesh out what low% means at the beginning, idk if they did later. but what low% means as little item collection as possible to complete the game, and in LTTP, collecting the boss heart containers is required to progress, you can't get the crystals/pendants without doing so
