This game took me 20 years to finish, got it for xmas in 1998,finished 3/4 of it and just stopped playing(i dunno why,the game is a masterpiece).Last month i was helping out my parents clear out their basement and found my old nintendo 64 and zelda, took it home and just kept goin from my old save file and finished the game lol
Playtendo 6688 I didnt started getting into Zelda games until a few years ago. Skipped them when i was younger along with a lot of other Franchises. I’ve had the game for about 5 years now but I haven’t made it really that far for some reason. Might start it during the winter
Late but, i can see that being me if i had stuck with Nintendo and not gone with Playstation. Tomb Raider was the first game to do that for me. Blew my mind how long that game was.
Johnny, sorry for leaving two messages but I gotta say: could you PLEASE do more videos like this? you and Rob talking about memories? This was sooooo awesome!!!!
I was 9 when OoT came out. It blew my mind and it made me a Zelda fan for life. My 7yo son just beat it a few days ago actually and hes also now hooked for life 👍
Ocarina of Time is a legendary game and deserve all its praise and more. Happy 20th! Great to hear Rob and Johnny's memories and thoughts. It reminds me of my own memories, makes me feel old in a good way. :)
NintendoCade Gaming Love it. Never had a chance to play this game as a kid for being just one year old back then, so I'm enjoying this today through my Wii U! The game is full - and I mean it - full of secrets to find. Think I know why everybody loved it.
I love you guys, seriously. I grew up in this period, it was magical. Walking through chronic weather to get to my local mag shop, (3 mile round trip here in Wales) for my zx spectrum mags, then Nintendo, snes, etc over the years. Get home and read through them, jaw open at the stunning images of games to come. What makes oot more poignant for me is in my situation, my 'oot' friend, sadly took his own life many years ago, he was the one who could afford oot and a N64 first all those years before when it came out. I was mind blown, I couldn't believe what I was seeing, nothing else came close. Good times, good memories, and I love hearing guys like you gush over those sort of memories, I don't really have any friends left these days who are into gaming like me and you two, they're all far too normal 😂. Love the vids, never change 👌😁
The nostalgia hits hard with this episooode! Love hearing the memories you guys have together. Such a classic game to be remembered for all time. Here's to 20 more years.
Burn4Freedom420 Same here, me and my brother were gifted this game for Christmas by our parents. It was such a revelation at the time and honestly it is to this day my favorite game of all time
For me Ocarina will allways be the greatest game ever made. The only people that will really understand why are the ones who played it at launch or in its time. I was 18 when played it and no other game has made me so obsessed since. There's been some greats like last of us and BOTW but Ocarina is the greatest for me and allways will be.
For me, some of the greatest games of all time are: Call of Duty 4, Minecraft, Sonic the Hedgehog, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario 64, GoldenEye 007, Street Fighter 2, Need for Speed: Underground, Aggressive Inline, Worms 3D, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, Tony Hawk's Underground, Ultimate Alliance, Spider-Man 2, Guitar Hero 2, LEGO: Star Wars, SSX Tricky, Kya: Dark Lineage, and RuneScape. I am getting an N64 soon and hope to get Ocarina of Time. I have seen a gold one for £35. Not sure if it's worth it at that price. Thoughts?
@@TheClassicWorld Retro Workshop well this is a while later so obviously may be too late, but that is a good price for an original gold N64 Ocarina of Time cartridge, at least from what I've seen perusing Ebay and the like (usually they run at least 2-3 times that much) That being said, I hope you found one and bought it so you can enjoy OoT. It's a wonderful game :)
Finding all the heart pieces!!! Definitely one of the greatest gaming experiences because of how innovative it was for its time. It transcended its medium
I was 9 years old when Ocarina of Time was released, and I remember how big a deal it was. Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time changed the game industry, reinventing the wheel.
I can picture Johnny walking through the snow just to get his game fan magazine with the final fantasy 6 music opening where Terra, Biggs, and Wedge walk through the snow storm to get to the first town in the game lol
My first experience with Ocarina of Time was in early 1999. A friend let me borrow the game and his N64. And here’s the kicker... He lent me the strategy guide. But it wasn’t a normal guide. One of his other friends took the time to photo copy the entire guide. It was crazy big because he didn’t use both sides of the copy paper.
Ocarina of Time is my all time favorite game. I didn't get it when it first came out but I got it a little less than a year after (around Sept of 1999 I believe). I had originally rented it in early 1999, probably in February, after a friend of mine was saying "man you've got to play this game!!" And back then I had no idea what Zelda was and I was mixing up the title with that Viking Chess game back on the 64 because Zelda sounded Viking(ish) to me. Anyway he said "no man it's awesome, you've gotta play it!!" And so I did. I went to Blockbuster and rented it one weekend. I was blown completely away. I found that I was enjoying every aspect of the game. I remember going through the Deku Tree and just being amazed by everything I saw. A few months later I bugged my dad into buying me the Ocarina of Time Official Nintendo Power Player's Guide (which I still have) even though I didn't own the game. I was that in love with it. I rented it several more times and finally asked my grandparents if they'd get it for me. They agreed and I got it. I rushed to my room, popped it in the 64 and started my long journey!!! For the next 2 years that game was pretty much all I played, or well mainly what I played. I had beat it probably a few months after having it but I would go back again and again to the game doing extra stuff, collecting heart pieces, fighting Ganondorf over and over. To this day I still consider this to be my favorite in the series. I really enjoy the entire franchise but this game holds a very special place in my heart. It was a game that just absolutely meant the world to me. It was the first game with a real story that I played and it showed me what gaming could be apart from platformers like Sonic and Mario. This game actually made such an impact on me, that when I listen to the credits rolling, especially the version from ZREO as the Redux version, I tear up. I've played some amazing games in my life, FF7, FF8, Crono Trigger, and many many many more, and even they don't give me the same feeling as Ocarina of Time. Call me nostalgic or say that I'm a fanboy, but this game meant that much to me.
I loved the video Johnny! I always love whenever we get to see Rob again as well. It used to be all the time lol I miss him being in so many videos. But I just wanted to say thank you for making and keeping up with the great, genuine content you produce. You guys are some of the coolest guys I’ve ever “met”, and I wanted to let you know, you’re videos make me very happy when I see them in my subscription box. Keep up the fantastic work Johnny, much love from Indiana
My heart! Ocarina of Time is still a unicorn to me. Perfection. So much to do, but not overly sandboxy. The soundtrack is one that I’ll listen to. Hell, today on Spotify, the soundtrack is all I’ll be listening to today. This game changed my gaming life. My Oma got it for me the Christmas it released. I played that til the wheels fell off. Man, such a beauty. The first boss scared me as a kid, it took me like 6 trys to finally get my courage up and beat that bastard. Then, as a kid, I thought I was done the game. THEN the whole world opens up. My fragile mind couldn’t believe it. So. Good. My fav in the series(I agree with you Rob) It was/is perfect. Thanks for bringing us down memory lane guys. Made my heart swell.
I love this game with all my soul. I feel immensely emotional every time I replay it. It's my favorite videogame of all time and will always have a special place in my heart.
omg... can someone please make an animation of Johnny and Rob adventuring to Walmart and attempting to resist playing Zelda OoT? That would be hilarious.
I remember getting this game from my dad that Christmas. He pretended that every store had sold out of their copies and he wasn't able to get me a copy just to hype up the experience. I stayed up playing it all night while he passed out on the couch watching me play.
I got it back in say December that year. I split the cost with my younger brother and he borrowed it as a sleep over to a friends house and I think they got to the third dungeon in that time frame.
shit it been twenty years ?..........remember picking this up, it was sold out pretty much every where, we went to a small video game store & they had two copies left, managed to get one, great memorys, great game
As someone originally from Kamloops, I feel your pain with the greyhound trip to Vancouver during the winter...Love that you guys are Canadian! Thanks for sharing your stories about this classic Zelda game!
Hey guys, when Ocarina of time came out I had just started secondary school (uk) I can believe it's been that long! I'm 31 now!! It was a great game with some great memories attached to it. I went through it again last year an still lived it. Your videos rule!! Take care!
what a coincidence, i am now reading and looking the Zelda Quadrilogy of books right now. - The Art & Artifacts - The Hyrule Historia - The Encyclopedia - The 'Creating A Champion'
This channel is as much about the power of nostalgia and growing up in the '80s/'90s and the friends you had at the time as it is about video games. This is a good thing.
I first played Ocarina of Time through the bonus disc that was distributed with preorders of The Wind Waker in 2003. I didn't actually first play it until July of 2013 when I found it in a second-hand game store. It took me a fairly long time just to get through the Spiritual Stone half of the game for some reason.
i just turned 18 , was living with my aunt at the time , had preordered the game from kmart , at that time i was going to adult school to get my ged , and skipped school when straight to kmart got my game and went straight to play it , remember on that first day played for 16 hrs straight if i remember correctly , game was so awesome
I was a freshman in high school, remember waiting until Christmas of 98 to see if I'd get the game or I'd have to wait and use some spending money I had saved. Sure enough my dad knew what I wanted, one of my favorite Christmas vacations ever alongside 1996 when I got the N64 and Super Mario.
That snow storm you speak of in 1996 also hit NYC. I remember it vividly. It was a nightmare lol. I got the game on release day from Toys "R" Us in 1998 (I had reserved a copy) and binged played it snuggly in the warmth and confort of my home :) A great game and a great memory. You and Rob always hit the nail in the head when it comes to gaming nostalgia. Thanks for the upload.
Ocarina of Time is the game of my life, always will be. It is a big part of me and It warms my heart to see you two together talking about the memories of this masterpiece. It's like being in a conversation and hearing two of your best friends talking about your favorite game!
Those time was special because we got to experience the first Mario and Zelda games in full 3D environment. It like the people who first experience color tv.
Ocarina will forever hold a special place in my heart, it was the first game I beat at 4 years old, I always watched my big brothers play it growing up. I may have games I "enjoy" more but no game will ever mean as much to me as Ocarina does.
I'm 29 years old. I remember getting N64 from my mom that year with a few games. Star fox 64, Mario Kart and Zelda. My mom was 35 years old back then and I never got to play zelda as she played it non stop. I could only watch. 20 years later she's 55 and just beat breath of the wild. Now it's my turn to play.
I remember that snowfall in '96. I mad the EXACT same trek to London Drugs in Abbotsford on the Sunday. I only got half way because the snow was more than 4ft high. Nov '98 couldn't come fast enough in those days.
I only played this for the first time in 2011 on holiday on the 3ds when I was 12/13 and it is such a special game to me. That year for me was such an amazing year for me in terms of games, this and Skyrim. Both games to this day are my favourite games and I still go back to them. Magical games.
This episode is a perfect example of why I love your videos so much. Genuine love for gaming, being able to tell stories associated with the time you were playing a certain game, it's most certainly what makes your channel stand out ❤ also, always happy to see Rob!
Experienced this game on the gamecube back in 2003. My two older brothers trying to get past the first dungeon, this game was such a surreal experience at the time.
I can’t believe it’s been that long! I remember when it was released. I came home from college for Thanksgiving and my younger brother had picked it up. I played it over the holiday and on that Saturday went out and bought my own N64 at Toys R Us. I took my brother’s copy of OoT and my N64 back to college and played the hell out of it over the week. Skipped classes all week and beat it early that Friday morning. I remember all the guys in my dorm crowding into my room to see me beat the game. Such a great memory. Thanks for sharing guys.
Always look forward to you both reminiscing about experiences surrounding games. Still remember how impressed I was by Ocarina, as a kid. Definitely had a huge impact.
Kinda a weird thing happened so the way you feel about ocarina of time is how I feel about FF7. So decided to looked up a 20 year anniversary video for it. I know its been 21 years since its release but anyway... I happened to stumble across your 18 year anniversary since ff7 release video. Its heartbreaking to see you have such an emotional connection to the game. I have such fond, amazing memories with it but you have a totally different feeling towards ff7. Anyhow im gonna finally pick up ocarina of time today after watching this video..
A gift from my beloved Grandfather that I will forever remember. Not only because the gift was amazing, but because the game was unforgettable since the opening. I remember running to a best friend's house to call him to my place so we could play this epic journey!!
I got this game in 6th grade, the last day of school before thanksgiving break. The entire break was going to be dedicated to this game. Of course I preordered it through Best Buy, where my brother worked. He brought it home that afternoon. I was so obsessed with all the Nintendo power previews of the game leading up to the release. I would read and reread the little blurbs with the screenshots that you guys mentioned. I was so intrigued by the button mapping on the screen. ... it’s the Purest form of nostalgia for me.
I love this video. It made me smile through the whole thing. It's stories about be being a gamer or a geek at a certain time, where it will never be that way again because if the internet. But then watching honest videos like this on RU-vid that are self created is a whole other time period for geeks. We don't even know each other but we all get a sense of who you are because of the videos you share. This may be the good old days in the future.
I remember preordering this game and being so excited since I was on Thanksgiving break from school and I had nothing else to do but eat and play Ocarina of Time, what a time to be 12 years old!
These guys are so awesome! To see the love and excitement in a game goes beyond words! Ya'll have love and passion for the games you play and now you have a subscriber!! thanks and keep up the good work.
i can't believe it's been 20 years. I was so hyped for this. i remember buying every game mag that even mentioned anything about it....i think i still have them sitting in my parents basement. Opening this up on christmas day 1998 was such a joy to my 15 year old self.
Hey yo HCG long time fan from aboot 2012'ish first time commenting. I was 8 years old in '98 when this game came oot and all my friends had N64 and me and my brothers had the PS1 however first major experience i had was at my friends house when he had rented a N64 as well as Ocarina and that was my first Zelda experience 20 years ago. Also i medicate with cannabis regularly and i find it helps me concentrate better since i have ADHD but to each their own :)
It BLOWS MY MIND that this game is already 20 years old. I literally feel like it was yesterday I got it for Christmas..... I'm not exaggerating when I say this game literally saved my life. Got me through some very, very dark and depressing times in my life. It'll always hold a very special place in my heart for that reason alone.
I was 7 and now I am 28. I remember coming home, and my brother came to get me saying I am Adult link now! And I was shock to see Adult link. But Yea. This game is the BEST ZELDA ever made Link to the past is good. but in that time it was mind blowing Still is
Definitely one of my favorite games of all time. It's influence CAN'T be understated. It's awesome to see Rob on here again! These kinds of videos are among my favorites you do, Johnny, but I have a blast with pretty much everything you come out with!
My kid brother wanted that game so bad. I Remember standing in line at Target for 3 hrs before they opened and we got 1. He still has his original copy to this day.
I've only just recently been watching all of your content, but I'm absolutely in love with your enthusiasm towards video games. Thanks for this man, it helps me relive the wonderful video game memories of my past with others who feel the same.
Love these kind of videos with both of you reminiscing =) would love to hear you both talk more on the later Metroid games like prime and the others (even tho I haven't played those yet aha)
I remember playing this back in 2004 for the first time. I was so happy to play it and this was after playing through a link to the past and the first game and it was amazing.
