The Legend of Zelda Theory: The Great Deku Tree

The Great Deku Tree is the fatherly guardian of the forest and the Kokiri. He protects the forest and keeps evil at bay. He is however absent during the events of Twilight Princess...yet the first temple we enter is built inside a few giant trees. The connection between the Deku Tree and the Forest Temple is easily made. But is it really the case?

Obviously, the Kokiri accidentally gave up their immortality when they left the woods in order to party at the end of Ocarina of Time

After playing this part in the game again, I'm convinced that the "Forest Temple" is a re-imagining of the Kokiri Forest, meaning the settlement where the Kokiri lived. The symbol on the doors is the most obvious giveaway, but also just the fact that there are so many structures built among the trees. Yes, I think this is where the young Hero of Time once lived. This is even supported by the fact that the first time you see the Hero's Shade is just outside the Forest Temple. It seems evident that the Hero of Time was drawn back to his old home in the woods (cf Majora's Mask) and eventually established a new settlement nearby with Malon and Epona in what is known as the Ordona Province in TP. Many things in TP are a re-imagining of what we knew in OoT, including the Temple of Time. The idea is, that from the perspective of the game Twilight Princess, the Temple of Time was always in the woods. But I agree that the last tree in the Forest Temple where the boss is might just be the Great Deku Tree, considering it's the only one that is grey and decayed.

I personally think that the monkeys are the Kokiri, since they linger near the deku tree and are peaceful creatures, like in wind waker they can change forms.

This video made me think of a highly disputed theory that I would like to hear your opinion on. (or read it anyways) What are your thoughts on what Link did after the end of Twilight Princess? Link is seen leaving Ordon with Epona, implying he was going off on another adventure but, to this date, there is no sequel to the game. I've seen some theories that say he was going to search for a way to Midna, as Ocarina of Time Link did towards Navi, while another theory states that he could have gone to help with the restoration of Castle Hyrule. You have many interesting points in all of your videos and I look forward to any opinions you might have.

It would be cool to have a Twilight Princess sequel set in a dark Majora's Mask-like setting, taking place in the twilight realm on his search for Midna. Somehow, Link finds a way to the realm but finding Midna is difficult, for some reason. The twilight realm is a perfect setting for another dark Zelda game.

This theory actually got me thinking and i don't know if any one else has mentioned it here or even noticed it as well but i re-played Twilight Princess, not too long ago and when doing the forest temple i noticed a structure in the temple that very much reminded me of Saria's house. So its not hard to imagine that when deku tree and the forest grew it over took the kokiri homes as well.

The problem with the Temple of Time in TP is that it's on the western edge of the Faron Province, south of Lake Hylia, while the Temple of Time in OoT was on the eastern edge of the Lanayru Province, far north of Lake Hylia. This means it is most likely that there were two temples of Time - one ruined ancient one in the Lost Woods and a much smaller newer one in Hyrule Castle Town. This means there were also two Sacred Groves - one guarding the Forest temple and one guarding the Temple of Time, akin to the old shrines of Hyrule in Skyward Sword. Maybe Rauru found the old Temple and built a new one in Lanayru, moving the Master Sword as he did so and turning it into a key to the Sacred Realm. When Link left Hyrule, however, the sword was moved back to its original resting place deep within the Lost Woods to prevent Ganondorf from using it to obtain the Triforce. Still, great video and I love discussing Zelda theories with people who don't just keep repeating, "but the Hyrule Historia says blah blah blah".

I read a pretty cool theory explaining that after the second Deku Tree had been killed for good in the Child timeline, he never grew a new sprout and stayed dead. And since they never had the Deku Tree's magic to protect them, the Kokiri eventually were killed by monsters or turned into Skull Kids. It's interesting to think about! Anyways, awesome theory as always. This is a theory I actually haven't seen too much, and you drew some very strong connections! Especially the bit about the Fused Shadow! :0
@VortexxyGaming
@VortexxyGaming 10 лет назад
Thanks :). It is quite fun to think about all these things that could have happened! I still have hope that the Deku Tree will at some point reincarnate again in Twilight Princess. I didn't notice until very recently that the roots in the boss room turn a healthier colour when Diababa disappears. Maybe the Deku Tree was dormant and waiting for a hero to restart his cycle? These roots are sitting at the far backside of the old Deku Tree, so it might be the case that a new Great Deku Tree will start growing behind it in a few years? I don't want him to disappear forever haha.

i see alot of people are thinking that the kokiri have turned into the monkey's, but here is one thought i notice not alot of people may think about: what about the things the skull kid summons? they could be what the kokiri turned into: they never seem to actually die, just dissappear for a moment then come back. what if this whole time they are helping to protect the master sword, and therefore the seal that held back some of Ganon's power (evident in the adult timeline that it sealed half of his power) and then after that as a test to see if link (which they can sense is a descendant of their old friend) is ready to take on the trial of the temple of time. i mean they chase you, but they do give you some time to relax as well, as if they dont really want to hurt you
@timethunder4820

Mink Porter i believe the skull kid in twilight princess is the same skull kid in majora's mask. Since him and link became friends, link asked him to guard the master sword some time before he passed.

@Evilta
@Evilta 9 лет назад
I personally believe that without the Great Deku Trees protection the Kokiri eventually lost their immortality and grew up, eventually becoming the Ordonians... It would make aense what with how close Ordon Village is to the Great Deku Trees remains. Perhaps the Sapling died long enough ago so the memory of the tribe was forgotten, but their influence was still seen
@VortexxyGaming
@VortexxyGaming 9 лет назад
TheraHedgehog2 But the Kokiri aren't really humans. They're forest spirits that have taken the shape of Hylian looking creatures, probably to help Link from Ocarina of Time to feel more at home. The Deku Tree changes their form depending on what is the most beneficial for their survival.
@Evilta
@Evilta 9 лет назад
If that's the case hoe is Saria, a Kokiri, a Sage. Don't you need to be a member of anactual race to be a Sage? If they are only forest spirits they wouldn't be considered a race. And they existed even after Link left Hyrule in Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask the Ending credits of Ocarina of Time and the Sage of Winds in Wind Waker prove this
@VortexxyGaming
@VortexxyGaming 9 лет назад
They're not random spirits, they're a race of forest spirits created by the Deku Tree. That doesn't change they can be a sage, as they've been around for a long time, hidden in the woods. The kokiri are told they will die if they leave the woods, but as you said, they leave during the ending of oot. Perhaps it was a lie to prevent the kokiri from leaving the woods and getting killed.
@Evilta
@Evilta 9 лет назад
Why would they have guardian fairies if they were spirits anyways? They were never even stated as forest spirits in the games either
@VortexxyGaming
@VortexxyGaming 9 лет назад
TheraHedgehog2 They are actually referred to as 'forest spirits'. The Kokiri usually are simply called children of the forest, but the Korok, their evolved form in Wind Waker, are called forest spirits. Direct quote from the Deku Tree: "Well, then, Link... These are the Koroks--the spirits of the forest."

The Deku Tree Sprout in OoT couldn't grow because evil had invaded the forest, right? But after Link has defeated Diababa in TP, isn't it very likely a new Great Deku Tree can sprout there?
@VortexxyGaming
@VortexxyGaming 9 лет назад
I would say yes, since the tree you find the fused shadow in changes in color (from grey to green, in the cutscene) as soon as diababa is defeated. There could potentially be a seed planted nearby that can now finally grow.

I'd be interested in a video on the lost woods. I recently noticed that the music of the lost woods from OOT is the same as the music playing when you run after the skullkid in the sacred grounds in TP. I thought your theory about the sacred ground being the old castle town made sense. That would also explain why the Temple of time is there, but then why is the lost woods right on top of it? Don't understand...

2 questions: Could the Life Tree Seedling in Skyward Sword be the very first Deku Sprout?. That turns into the Lost Woods and then into the OoT Forest Temple?. Could you do a video about the Snowpeak Ruins from Twilight Princess?.
@VortexxyGaming
@VortexxyGaming 10 лет назад
I'm not sure, there's nothing in the game that makes this connection likely (although it would be a pretty awesome origin story for the Deku Tree!). The Life Tree Seedling doesn't talk, and the Deku Tree Sprout is shown to already be able to talk at a young age. Also the Life Tree is inside the location of the Temple of Time from OoT, so it's placed a bit oddly for it to be the Deku Tree. Edit: I'm definitely going to do a vid about Snowpeak, since I have loved this place since I first played TP, so consider it on the list ;)

***** im 18 now, but when i beat ocarina of time when i was 9 (stuck on it at 7 for 2 years!!!) i ended up playing twlight princess and around the general map such as kakariko field ( i forget what its called its been 9 years lol) i saw these giant chasms and in other areas like around the entrance to the forest temple in TW and obviously as you said nintendo can change the map size/map design around etc but i was like what could have caused all this??? i mean obviously tectonic movement but... idk and when iwas 10 first playing TW i thought back to OOT and was like... maybe all of these chasms are from when in OOT ganondorf tried bringing down his castle to kill link/zelda (even though it didnt do anything immediate as he had hoped. maybe that caused all these chasms in the land. I mean heck ganondorf pretty much made an impact crater where hyrule castle was and it would be logical to assume that either he used his magic/energy/power to destroy the castle and make his own castle, or convert old hyrule castle to his castle then in either case using magic/energy/power to make it float above this lava in the impact crater so that no one (namely link) could enter his castle. If you have time i think you should really investigate these theories/ideas/areas. thanks regardless though as your videos are just impeccable!!!! :)

I saw a theory explaining that the monkeys from twilight princess are the decedents of the kokiri. Like the great deku tree has the power to alter the form of his children (like how they changed into koroks in wind waker to survive the great flood, or how the Kikiwi were turned into the kokiri) which might be, if your theory is true, to hide them from monsters/able to survive in the forest without his aid when the parasite started to kill him (i'm talking about the deku tree sprout mind you)

Awesome vid! In the first LoZ, Level 1 is in an old rotten tree in the middle of a lake. Does this tree have any connection to the Great Deku tree or the the flooding of Hyrule?
@VortexxyGaming
@VortexxyGaming 10 лет назад
It´s possible, but there are two trees in that game. The brown one, which is dungeon 1, and the green one. This tree containing dungeon 1 could be the old Deku Tree from OoT, it has a dungeon in it and that seems to be a recurring theme, and the green one is probably just a random tree since all it contains is a minigame. It would be a bit offensive to have the forest deity be degraded to become just a money scam from the Old Man :P Edit: The flood happened in the Adult Link timeline and Zelda 1 takes place in the timeline where Link got killed while fighting Ganon in OoT.

Well in Wind Waker the great deku tree states that the kokiri is more like forest spirits or whisps that can take the form of humans like in Ocarina of Time or alternatively change into something else. Supposedly the beings in Wind Waker are the kokiri in their "true" shape. Could it be possible that the monkey tribe you encounter in Twilight Princess are actually the shape that the Kokiri had chosen shortly before the era of twilight?
@VortexxyGaming
@VortexxyGaming 9 лет назад
I considered that, but they seem to act far more like wildlife than spirits. The main reason why I think that, is because you can only talk to them while you're a wolf. This implies they're just animals. The symbols on their shoulders are not Kokiri either.

Great theory, you did the perfect amount of thorough research as well. I'm surprised how I noticed most of those environmental details and didn't confirm in my head same place. I noticed the doors immediately too. Though I guess the main reason is my mind thinks of that other random large tree, that I'm curious your thoughts behind it would be. The tree I'm thinking of is a dead trunk, in Hyrule field, south of Hylia Bridge, where you can ride horseback underneath with archer bokoblins a little farther down the trail, and a rare golden chu chu drops from it. It's a bug location, I'd say mantis, but that could be the Eldin Bridge. The partner in on the north part of Bridge of Hylia; the bug itself is on the rock formation under this tree. What's your say on the origin of this tree?

Actually it can exist. The sprout grew when the deku tree died. Based on when you go back into your childhood at the end of ocarina of time, it seems to be right after you leave the kokiri forest, because you haven't yet met Zelda. THe sprout would still grow, becuase the deku tree IS dead.

So just another theory but remeber in WW how they explain the children of the forest changed from there original forms to fit the nature to the forest. Or something like that. Well the more I think about it the more I fell that the monkeys are actually the kokiri just reshaping to fit the forest. In OOT kokiri forest wasn't that grand so it made sense that tree houses and children worked fine. But now with the forest overgrowth and the movement of more monsters into the area they changed again to something more suitable to survive staying higher in the trees avoiding the ground. But still keeping there playfull personality and connection to the forest.

maybe, as well with the WW forbidden forest, the dungeon is the ruins of the kokiri village. this is crazy how it all ties up, you can see how the later part of the temple is defiantly the deku tree. but this explains why there isnt a great deku tree in twp because it died. maybe another theory, going off on a limb, could the monkys just be the next spiritual inhabitants of the kokiri idk lol

I have a theory on the Great Deku Tree. Well actually its more like a hypothesis. In the original Legend of Zelda there is a dead tree stump with the first dungeon in the game where you fight Aquamentus. This could be the withered remains of either the Deku Tree or Deku Tree Sprout.
@VortexxyGaming
@VortexxyGaming 9 лет назад
Possible, but as I explained in a previous comment, there's two hollow trees in the original game. One contains a rupee mini game and the other a dungeon. They're not next to each other either and not in a forest. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's not likely either one is the Deku Tree/sprout.

Interesting theories, but I personally disagree with my own ^^. It seems to me the forest temple in TP is the Forbidden Woods of Wind Waker.. Additionally, and this doesn't make as much sense, but it looks to me there was a Great Deku Tree above Lake Hylia where the stump is, which would make sense since the Chus flock there, like they did to the GDT in Wind Waker.

***** Interesting it seems highly likely that the kokori are actually descendant of the picori.. perhaps the great deku was originally one of that trees that turns link into minished size. Those stumps are hollow inside like the great deku... what if the magic that allows you to turn big and small somehow brought the tree to life and made it great extremely tall, and the picari who where around the tree also grew in size... just a theory....

Altho there's a question, if your theory is true why wasn't a new Deku Sprout planted? I guess since in OOT the Sprout couldn't grow until the evil in the temple was destroyed, maybe the same applies here?
@VortexxyGaming
@VortexxyGaming 9 лет назад
My guess is that the seed can't grow in soil tainted with evil (as seen in oot). Once the evil is gone, the newest Deku Tree should sprout again.

***** I mention the OOT reason didn't I? XD And too bad after freeing the temple we never see the new sprout, or do we...............

I cringe thinking the Kokiri children died eventually after the Deku Tree perished. But I found it as a definite possibility whilst playing Twilight Princess.

The Link in twilight princess is the successor of the link from ocerina of time. The ocerina of time hero, after he was done, needed to leave signs to help the hero in the future(twilight princess) destroy evil. The ocerina of time link is the soldier who trains you when you go to the howling stones. He left those stones himself. He did things like leave the bow with the gorons so eventually they can give it to the future hero.

I do notice that you have a lot of points that are valid vortexxy but what about what they say in legend of Zelda ocarina of time the kokiri say that those that become lost in the lost woods become stalphos so wouldnt that get rid of the theory that became monkeys?

Interesting connections to the Great Deku Tree. It seems plausible. An emptied out Great Deku Tree also exists in Hyrule Warriors, which is implied to take place in the child timeline after Twilight Princess. I wonder if there can still be a connection? Though I know many will dismiss Hyrule Warriors as non-canon, it was still cool to see him in that game. zeldawiki.org/images/c/c7/HW_Great_Deku_Tree.png

Wait... Would the sprout still need to be grown in the Child timeline? Because Ganon would never have risen to power, there'd be no Gohma to be responsible for the Deku Tree's Death. Is the Deku Tree immortal? If not, I suppose there'd be another sprout, maybe even several. I have questions!

could it be possible for the kokiri to be the monkeys? lol xD just a random thought i mean they specificaly interact with you and are kind to you, so they may sense that you are related to Oot link :o idk just a thought xD
@VortexxyGaming
@VortexxyGaming 9 лет назад
I thought that at first too, but they share no connection whatsoever to Kokiri. Their tattoo is not a Kokiri related symbol and they don´t act like Kokiri spirits. It seems they´re just talking wildlife like in Majora´s Mask ^^

Is ordon not another country from hyrule, cus whats his face, that guy with the sword, who is talking to link at the very beginning of twilight princess, well, he mentions link moving to hyrule, and obviously you cannot move to a different country

hey great theroy but you forgot 1 importian detail in terms of the great deku tree. there would be no deku tree to replace the original one due to the fact young link would of never enter the forest temple in orcarina of time, since he was sent back to a point after the great deku tree was dead but the temple of time was never open because like never got the other spirit stones. in this timeline the great duke tree would of been already poisoned and died and no replacement would be born, which i believe is why the kokiri vanish because they need the great deku tree to live and die out eventual because he is dead.
@VortexxyGaming
@VortexxyGaming 10 лет назад
The Deku Tree Sprout is visible before you even enter the Forest Temple. He´s just submerged under the ground. So Link being sent back in time shouldn´t matter that much.
@speedy_brennan
@speedy_brennan 10 лет назад
what I'm saying is he never grows because the forest is poisoned aleady by then.

The Kokiri from Ocarina of Time evolved into the Koroks in the adult timeline as is shown in Wind Waker, could they have changed into the Monkeys in the child timeline that are shown in Twilight Princess? With the Deku Tree no longer around to protect them wouldn't it make sense if they took on a more animalistic form to improve survival instincts and chances of survival after the Deku Tree's demise, also their evolution would be on a more animalistic path because of the lack of the Deku Tree's magic to curb their evolution more towards that of plant like beings similar to what the Koroks are.

You should do a theory on dark link some say he was made to protect that particular room in the water temple by the interlopers, and the thing is he could mimic anyone so say Zelda went in he would be dark Zelda, others say he was made by the Gods as a test for link to face his dark side I say he was created by ganondorf to kill link but failed (like the story evil link made dark links story)
