I am from Austria and remember that day very well... It was so embarassing and same time the Faroe Islands became very popular in Austria from that day on ... I really wish I can visit those islands one day... the nature looks fantastic I had a friend in school who had a similar woolen hat like the Faroese goalkeeper and his nickname from that day in Landskrona on was "Knudsen"... People still use this name for him until now

When the result made it all the way to California I couldn't believe it. It was harder to follow soccer in the USA at that time, so it probably took about a week for us to find out the score.
Austria were seen as "DarK Horses" to potentially win the World Cup in Italy a few months before...and it was a neutral venue! Always respected Faroes since then.

Apparently Faroe Islands are represented only in the paralympics (where they have won some medals), However, athletes from Faroe islands compete in the olympics under the Danish flag (Wikipedia)
+Sportstalk Dudes He meant that psychologically they tried to divide the entire match into 5 minute intervals, such as to be able to cope the whole 90 minutes plus...that is when you expect to get a lot of goals against you, so to try to keep away from thinking about those goals you try to focus on what happened the last 5 minutes...and then 5 minutes more... etc.
No Pls Yes it is, but everything is relative (and in Faroe Islands many are relatives :p ) But it's a cold and harsh country. Lots of storms in the winter. But it's fantastically beautiful and very safe for children to grow up in (almost no crime and you can send your kids out to play in the morning, and they'll come home late in the evening. People take care of each other, and usually know someone who knows someone's child or parent. But it's not easy to be able to move there (getting permit etc.) and you have to be able to accept the cultural differences, and as best adapt to the new ones, as there most likely are some/many. For instance, we kill and eat pilot whales. We also have twice as many sheep as people in the islands, so we eat a lot of sheep as well ;) And although we catch a lot of fish in our vast ocean, we export nearly all of it. Fish export is approximately 90+% of our GDP.
They played in the World Cup that same year, this match was not long after that tournament ended. This is why this match is considered so historical and an important part of Faroese sporting history.
