The Legendary Jack Johnson 

Jack Johnson had a tactical defensive approach to boxing and the sweet science which was unusual at the time; back then it was all about swarming but Jack J fought with a lot of intelligence. I read an interview with him and he seems like a real nice guy too. He loved to drive his car unsafely fast, and one time a cop pulled him over and gave him a ticket, Johnson handed him a $100 bill and when the cop said he didn't have change for that Johnson told him to keep the change because he was going to drive back the same way.

The part where he's knocked down almost looked like he wasn't gonna be able to get up. Him getting back up and destroying his opponent showed his determination and perseverance.

I rank him as number just for the time period he fought in. This is the early 1900’s when black men, women and children were lynched for no reason. And he still did what he did without fear. Straight warrior!

my favorite part is when Jack Johnson drops Stanley Ketchel, decides nah I ain't done, drags him up to his feet, into the corner...... 1:45

its easy to look at an old film and say Johnson wasn't so great. but being in there with him and fighting him, that's a different story. all the whites in America wanted him beat, and for the longest time, none of them could beat him. if they could have, they certainly would have done it. so obviously, he's greater than you think. furthermore, you never get the sense he's fighting his hardest, except in his last fight when he was 37 and out of shape. he toyed with fighters, and laughed the entire time, and still beat everyone up, while playing around. he toyed with ketchel he entire fight, and as soon as ketchel got fresh, Johnson got up and immediately knocked him out cold. which shows he could have done that at anytime he wanted. his foot was never really on the gas pedal. so most of the film on him only shows him fighting at maybe 40 - 50% of his real ability

Wanna talk about a man who lived his life fearlessly... Jack Johnson was truly free.

The BEST EVER! He suffered the biggest pressure ever stepping in the ring. People were killd everytime he won a fight. He had the best stress ever to enter the ring as beeing black. He came from a poor black family. He overcame his limitations and became the FIRST BLACK CHAMPION OF THE WORLD. He must carry the title of the best ever, as his contribution overcomes time and life!!!

I used to bomb people for saying he was in the top 10 heavyweights because I mean look at who he fought...Owen Moran was just not that good, a 5'7, 170 lb, (the shortest and second lightest heavyweight champion of all time) fighter who's name I can't even remember, a drained and ring rusted Jim Jeffries, an inexperienced Joe Jennette, an inexperienced Sam Langford, and an extremely young Sam mcvea. Now I realize he suffered the same fate as two of my favorite champions...Rocky Marciano and John L. Sullivan. He came up in a time when all the champions he could fight were old (Jim and Bob), small, or just not the kind of fighters you think of as boxing greats. He couldn't fight the four black fighters people claim he dodged because they were black and the Jim Jeffries vs Jack Johnson riots are a pretty good reason for why they weren't going to create opportunity for another reigning black champion so they threw both modern contenders and aging relics at him in attempt to dethrone him and none of them were in the least bit effective for a good reason. Jack Johnson makes my top 5 heavyweights now and I'm glad some people view him well for reasons other than just being the first black heavyweight champion.

Jack Johnson was a savage. Jim Crow ear never scared him.

This is one man who does not get enough recognition for his place in history. He wasn't trying to be anything but himself but in doing so was a lightning rod. Also, he liked to physically support his opponents while he kept beating on them, just to prolong his time on stage lol!

even though there was a lot of racism against Johnson but a lot of white people was really supporting him more than people not supporting him.

Everyone talks about how great this guy was, for being outspoken in his time? Couldn't agree more. For being a boxer, not a chance. He fought mostly guys who were middleweights, he would not fight the top black fighters of his time. Joe C. knocked this bum out and he was a lt heavy. Come on here be objective. JJ not a great fighter, bold fearless without a doubt.

Jack Dempsey would've knocked Johnson out inside of 3 rounds.

Good for his time (mainly fought lighter men mind). Would have been destroyed by the modern era of heavyweight boxing greats, Ali, Frazier and Foreman.
