This is one of the finest finishing stones available on the market today. Just because its old dont mean its dead. This stone will produce one of the sharpest edges anywhere. Enjoy! 🐔
IHi Rooster! I'm rewaching your wideo's time to time. A few days ago find a vintage 5" "Norton Hard Arkansas", is translucent, with a side label on it , a vintage wooden box .put it beside my recently bought 6" Smith"s black arky an another little 30x52x87 mm black arkansas stone an a big 10" vintage slightly translucent washita.. In this way formed a pleasent arky line, i enjoy them almost every day😊
Thank you for producing these videos very informative. I've been watching all of your videos start to finish. Just ordered a soft and hard from Dan's. Found a Dan's translucent 8 x 2 for $53 from Sierra Trading had to get it.
I just came across your channel and i gotta say i learned a lot that i didnt know about arks from your 4/5 video progression on them, i have a few one black one soft and a pocket hard and i really appreciate the history and quality of arkansas stones they are beautiful and just have a magic to them but i just wanted to introduce myself to u my name is Tim and i really appreciate your channel and the content you put out i have a deep love for knife collecting and sharpening and happy to be a new subscriber to ur channel keep it up bud have a good one.
Kim is an A-1 gal!! Excellent customer service!! I just got a pure white translusent 8x2x1 from Dans. Very uniform in color. Its what i call a skim milk color.
dude! I can't believe you gave me a compliment. you always tell me I ain't shit and I got a long way to go when I get you on the phone! awright, all kidding aside, I love them Arks. I rarely use the DMTs any more unless I need a complete re-profile. That black stone I got from you finishes so fine I almost wonder if I even need to go to the strop. thx for all the help! and btw, it's Cletus. you're from Tennessee and you don't know nobody name a Cletus?? it ain't Latin man.
I talked to Kim at Dan's last week. She is super nice and was very willing to help me with specific sized stones I want for my Kazak sharpening system.
You can't find those like that anymore. Thise were mined out of the market as far as know. My dad left my brother one like this when he passed. But a black stone doesn't have nothing on yours. Good upload!
Hell of a video!! Jyst what i'm looking for right now. That finer of a stone, are you using the oil or water? Nagura? I don't have the hard stones yet.. have the soft. It was recommended to me to add a little shave soap to my oil. Seems to be working great. Thank you for sharing! Greg
I would like to use Arkansas stones to sharpen my straight razor. Can you recommend the steps I need to go through and the various stones and the progressions? I am trying to achieve the HHT (Hanging Hair Test) where it can cut through hair. Thanks!
Well with a straight razor id say get the wider stone. 3" by at least 8" a nice soft and black from dans would do nicely. A cheaper option would be their primitave cut. Then of course a nice strop.
I just ordered a. Dan's black 2x8. It's on back order. Pretty excited for it. I'm going to finish on it after going through my set of spyderco stones. Do you recommend sanding it with 2000 grit sandpaper to make it ultra, ultra fine? Also, soapy water instead of honing oil?
I usually use 1k 1.2k 1.5k and then 2k for lapping a black. But yes that's all I use on a stone like that. Is dawn and water. And I use the black after the Spyderco uf. And let me tell you that's a hell of a edge.
That sir is a lovely stone, and at that size too. How much would one go like that for? Also maybe it is just because of where I live but I am pretty sure there is quartz all over the place that a light would shine through. But I have never seen a sharpening stone do that.
I would expect 2-300 bucks but I am no expert on them. I know very little which is why I love listening to you talking about them. One day I would love a full set from Dan's or somewhere like that but money isn't everywhere for me at the moment. Every time I get some an expense comes up or there is something more critical I need before more sharpening things lol. The quartz is all over the hills near me. The white stuff can be very opaque and some is kinda clear. It also comes in different shades of red. There are big pieces lying around bigger than basket balls down to gravel size. I guess I just grew up here and never though much of it. In Australia we don't have much flint and what we do have in kinda crap. But the quartz works well as a for flint and steel instead of flint. Just breaks down and goes dull much faster.
scottecooke yes your right on the price lol. And i thought u were from Australia also! What are the chances i could send u some funds and you could send me a lil of each? And i appreciate you saying that. 👍
Sorry for late reply, missed the comment. There wouldn't be much point in me sending it as quartz is one of the most common stones in the world. You probably wouldn't have to drive far to get some. The red I was talking about was jasper. But there is red quartz as well. I did see a weird black/clear piece my friend showed me but he wouldn't let me have it lol.
@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 where do you buy stones from Gary samples from? I'm not familiar with that name and googling the name didn't give me any results.
Rough Rooster Knife Sharpening New one, I bought mine at Ace, I only had it about 2 weeks, sorry it has taken me awhile to respond, youtube messes up my notifications.
Rough Rooster Knife Sharpening I believe it to be a hard Arkansas, it polishes ok but it is not coarse, more of a finishing stone/polishing stone, doesn't cut my swiss army knives blade well. I would have to place the grit in the 600-800 range
Brad Griffin thank you much. man start off with a soft Arkansas. They are cheap and you will enjoy it! if i had to pick 1 Arkansas stone for good it would be a soft. great general purpose stone! Thanks for the kind words! Im infatuated with Australia. I want to visit someday. 👍
Hey another Aussie. Keep an eye out at markets and garage sales. Every now and then an old natural stone will turn up. They usually need a lot of tlc but when they are fixed they are a pleasure to use.
MasterofPlay7 Actually auctions flea markets etc are an excellent source for old stones. Your experience is little to none. I have had issues with you on my channel here before. I dont appreciate you giving my viewers a hard time.
Ray Cornett i would put the whole thing in there. worst it will do to the box is lighten it up. just re sand it and stain etc. i have done it in the past with pretty good results.
Where are you getting this info from. Because "historically" as you put it. When you ordered a HARD Arkansas, you didn't know if you were getting a translucent or a black or a blue black or a True hard Hard etc.... I have literally read every single piece of literature on Novaculite and Geological surveys, and Arkansas stone sharpening. I've never ran across this being the best.... Links info etc please. I really wish you would post something useful or informative, instead of the bullshit you choose.
It's quartz. Very similar in composition to glass. You find little white quarts stones laying in some places. Quartz is generally found near gold deposits, so a lot of these deposits have been mined during the gold rush. Growing up in eastern Canada, our yard was littered with quartz. I used to put the stones in a tumbler and they would polish clear.
@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 Interesting! "Novaculite - a hard, dense, fine-grained siliceous rock resembling chert, with a high content of microcrystalline quartz." I have a very nice old Trade Pike stone that looks very similar to yours. I'd estimate mine is over 100 years old. It's still in great shape, and I use it every day.
@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 Yeah, the label says "Hard Arkansas". It belonged to my grandfather. He died in the mid 90s at 84. It was given to him by his great uncle, who was a ship builder in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. It's in a nice, dovetailed wooden box.
You have to be careful of those meditative states. I got into one of those while sharpening a brand new Buck Gator folding belt knife and while checking the sharpness, I twitched and split my left index finger from bottom knuckle to top for 12 stitches.
I'm reading what you're saying but I don't understand your question. I was basically making a joke out of your "meditative state" by relating something that happened to me. My "meditative state" happened at 3:AM one morning about 8 years ago when I had no business sharpening a knife in the first place. If I've been sharpening all of the knives in the house, my finger tips get a little on the tough / insensitive side so I move on to the finger prints on the side of my index fingers. I had bought this Gator knife earlier that day but didn't get a chance to sharpen it until later that night. I had stopped sharpening it and was checking the edge when I dozed off. Sometimes, I wake with a start and twitch. When this happened, my finger was on the edge and got dragged up the blade slicing it and an artery long ways. As I said before, I had no business sharpening a knife at 3:AM. It was a stupid thing to do on my part.
@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 My mom opened a little tin can with a can opener and as she tossed the lid into the trashcan a couple feet away something happened and it cut her knuckle. It cut it so deep that it sliced a tendon in two and she can't bend that finger anymore. Since then I am super careful with knives, although that one can't be blamed on a knife...
Dude where have you been!!! I'm getting so frustrated trying to get a bur freehand. Been blowing through your videos trying to find one where you sharpen and show a bur. I know there's one here but I can't find it. I finally got a couple dia-sharps and it's like a restart on my whole process. Help!!!I'm ripping my beard out. Show me how to get a bur
Bud, I don't think you know who's channel you're on. I am an expert, this is the most in depth information you'll find on the internet about sharpening and specifically Arkansas stones.
Ahh I see. I’ve been looking into Arkansas for a while. Is getting into Arkansas really a rabbit hole? I’d love to get my edc and kitchen knives insanely sharp. I’m going to believe you that they worth the investment, seeing as how you’ve been sharpening for years and swear by them.
