Upon marching on Rome, Caesar took with him one out of his nine Legions: LEGIO XIII "Gemina" Legion. This is the full history of that Legion, and everything it went through before and after it's moment of fame...
I would greatly appreciate any support you would like to give this channel, as it will help me create more quality content for you in the future!

Correction:
What slipped my knowledge was that the final eagle of the teutoburg fallen legions was actually found several decades later, in 43 AD by Publius Gabinius. I apologize for this error.

Fun fact! I live in Alba Iulia (former Apulum) and I did my military service in the 136th Combat Engineer Batalion, stationed in the same town, and my batalion bears the honorary name Gemina, in rememberance of the Legio XIII Gemina. Thank you for this video!

@@HistoriaMilitum Wow, thank you, man! If you ever decide to come to Romania (which I encourage you to do, it is a beautyful country, rich in history), visit Alba Iulia to see the castrum of the Legio XIII Gemina; it has been dug up and set up for public display. A few meters away (literally) it is my old battalion. The old traditions are strong here... Edit: I know this has no relation to the subject, but I was a combat engineer just like my grandfather, who fought in WWII in 1944-1945 in Transylvania, Hungary and Chechoslovakia against Nazi Germany; my old unit is actually the same unit as his. My only regret is that he didnt lived long enough to see me during my time in the Army.

The justified assassinations always fail because they're the ones that are always prepared for it and expect it. They know it would be justified to kill them and that they have often made many enemies, so their guard is always up. It is the unjustified ones that often succeed because they never see it coming.

The Rubicon isn't in Rome, it's in Italy. Specifically northern italy, on the border of Cisalpine Gaul. You're conflating a few things; no soldier or Legate was allowed to carry a weapon across the Pomerium within Rome. That does not apply to Italy. In Caesar's case, he had been ordered to lay down his imperium, abdicate his post and disband his legions. Regarding the Rubicon, the Senate specifically stated that should he cross the Rubicon with one or more legions it would be deemed treason. It had nothing to do with the river itself in general, that was just the arbitrary boundary the Senate chose at that time.

Were the older legions numbered? For instance, do we know which legions fought at the battles of Trebia, Lake Trasimene, and Cannae during the Second Punic War?
@HistoriaMilitum
@HistoriaMilitum 3 года назад
Great question. The numbering system was actually brought into use by Pompey. Legions before him would mostly have names, and sometimes have numbers. I'm afraid we cannot track the manipular Legions of the Punic wars, or even Crassus' legions in the east due to lack of sources.
@marcusaureliusantoninusaug2161
@marcusaureliusantoninusaug2161 3 года назад
Very early Legions would have numbers 1 - 4 and also be known as the '4 Urban legions'. Their symbols were the wolf (Legion I), the bull (Legion II), the horse (Legion III) and the boar (Legion IIII). This is roughly around the time frame 300 BC to about the early days of the second Punic War (218, 217 BC). After that, the Romans 'spammed' legions as the second Punic War went on and the most likely historic consens is that they just kept numbering them, reusing the numerals I to IIII for destroyed or routed legions and then continuing with V, VI etc. Named Legions were very rare during the mid Republic. We know of a second Mars Legion (Legio II Martia) for example. During the late Republic we had a few named legions that we know of, like Caesar's Legio X Equestris (because they once rode on horseback) or the Legio V Alaudae (Larks) because they used lark feathers on their helmets and were from the Cisalpine Gaul region. Named Legions were a common thing in the Principate (starting with Augustus) and of course later the Dominate. That's what I remember from university lectures and discussions, plus all the stuff you can read in books and on the internet (fora etc.).

They were often numbered (as far as we know) but not in a way that connects to the later legions. The early Roman army was very different. The main differentiation would be between the 4 legions of Roman Citizens and the 4 Alae of the socii. These early legions (at least prior to the punic wars) were seasonal and militia based and we do not know whether a reinlisting legionary would return to the same legion, nor whether the legion existed in any form between campaigning seasons (they probably didn't). We also don't know whether a destroyed legion (like in the punic wars) was reformed, replaced with a new legion of the same number or replaced with a re-numbered legion. We don't even know whether their was any regional enlistment within Rome for these legions or if there was for example 2 specific legions for the patrician consul, 2 fo rthe plebian consul etc. The additional legions formed in the punic wars are even more mysterious. Later Roman legions were permanent like modern military regiments. Thus their names and numbers became much more important as they now had a continuous history.

From what I understand, the old polybian republican legions were newly numbered and raised for each campaign. So in most years 4 legions were raised, numbered I-IV.

Loving the series by far. Do you plan on doing one on the Legio V Macedonica anytime soon? I think an insight to the last Roman legion would be a good video.
