Titus Labienus, was from a Village , Cingulum ( nowdays Cingoli) , close to my town Macerata in Marche region , central Italy, at that time called Picenum. There Is a statue in the public Square of Cingoli of Titus by the way. The reason why Titus choose to be on Pompeus side is simple, Pompeus was also from Picenum, a town called Firmum ( actual Fermo) ,so a fellow citizen of Pompeus. He decided practically to be a patriot from his point of view. Many similar episodes happened in the american civil war too, general f.i. Lee did something similar despite his personal ideas.

@@HistoriaMilitum Many of those Romans were very prideful, they understood as much as anyone that the life blood of Rome was in war. He likely martyr’d himself, so that after he fell his men would fight even harder.

In case you didn't know, a devotio was an ancient Roman tradition where generals would take off their armour, change into a ceremonial robe handed him by a pontifex, stand on a spear and, and, in front of this priest and his men, recite a prayer to the gods, mid-battle, offering his own life so that his side would triumph in the end, in an act of deliberate self-martyrdom in times of extreme need, in an effort to turn the tables when battles were looking very bleak and for all intents and purposes, unwinnable. They would then charge straight into the enemy lines knowing full well that this was a suicide mission. However this would have some unintended (or, intended) side-effects. The soldiers witnessing this would be inspired and gain a massive boost to their morale, fighting even harder than before. And the enemy soldiers would actually flee thinking that this man was surely possessed by the gods, to do such an act, and killing him, thereby making him a martyr, would bring a curse upon their army that would result in them losing the battle. If that were even possible, for he would fight with such ferocity, knowing that this would be his last stand, that the (ever superstitious) people of antiquity may have thought that he was quite literally imbued with the power, strength and wrath of the gods, in return for his life just offered. (The saying: 'a tiger is most dangerous when cornered with no escape' comes to mind). Instances where the devotio was used as far as we know, always resulted in victory. Consul Publius Decimus Mus was most likely the first to invoke it, during the Samnite wars in 340 BC. Interestingly his son and grandson, in sort of a family tradition, also invoked the devotio. Though after this, it became increasingly rare; perhaps this is why Crastinus' own sacrifice, especially if it constituted a traditional and authentic _devotio_ (the sources are vague on whether or not this is the case) inspired such zeal in the Caesarian lines that it galvanised them enough to win the battle, from a much weaker position no less. So I think what Crastinus, as the most senior figure in the Caesarian army (besides Caesar himself) was doing, was hearkening back to this ancient tradition, willingly sacrificing himself so that his side may win, and that is, indeed, exactly what happened.

I can imagine Crastinus and his volunteers fought like lions as they smashed into the enemy. Knowing that you will die...and the only thing that matters is what you do in the little time remaining to you is likely very freeing.

It's funny because the oversimplification steals from the sincere weight of his words, and mocks the effectiveness of perspective

@@legionx4046 They were both brilliant commanders, but the phalanx wasn't effective against the legions structure as they were by Caesars time. Caesar would've just avoided giving them battle on a terrain favorable to the phalanx. Alexander would've done the same, just in reverse, and it would have come down to them trying to maneuver to force the other to take the field (raiding foraging parties, towns, supply trains, etc.) And there's really no telling who would've come out on top in this; two armies of different styles, but both formed of battle hardened, prideful veterans, both led by one of the greatest commanders in history. Too tough to call I'd say.

Sorry, as Spaniard, I think that they were Romans... Between them and us, the people mixed races with Germans, Jewish, Arabs... and other minor races (like Japanese in 1600). After living more than 10 years aboard, I miss how different and yet similar are the Spaniards, is one of those places that you don't feel the racism because all of us are mixed between all the people that live in the country in the past.
