I‘m reading this book in the moment (in german)- chapter 6 - and I really enjoyed your description of it, without spoilers;-), and with a lot of great thoughts about ist, thanks👍🏽 Your channel looks very interesting, of course I‘m a new follower now.🙋🏻‍♀️

Awesome! Happy you liked the video. I know a lot of people have never heard of this book, so I really tried to talk about how much I loved it without getting into spoilers.

Concerning those going into politics, some things just never change: - What would the Senate do with me, an inexperienced legislator who lacks the faculty of self-deception, essential requisite for anyone wanting to guide others....Now you need young men, bright young men, with minds asking ‘how’ rather than ‘why,’ and who are good at masking, at blending, I should say, their personal interests with vague public ideals. Your Italian is very good, congrats! And I really enoyed your review, congrats on that too. To all viewers: if you've got to read only one Italian novel ever, make it this one. To say it is a classic is understating it. Ciao from Udine, Italy :)

Read The Last Leopard by David Gilmour, an incredible bio of Tommasi di Lampedusa

I had no idea this book existed, thanks for the recommendation. Tommasi's story is so interesting that it's surprising he is not talked about more often (at least in the US).

If anyone has seen the movie adaptation, what did you think of it?

the movie is well done! Visually stunning- it is directed by an aristocrat ( although on the left) that did a great job- Luchino Visconti.....a real period piece shot on location in some of Palermo's and Bagheria's magnificent crumbling palazzi- Nino Rota does the soundtrack- kinda like the Sicilian Gone With the Wind- Burt Lancaster ( role originally intended for Lawrence Olivier) does an amazing job as the erudite Sicilian aristocrat!

Di Lampedusa was prophetic and astute about what came to pass in Sicily and in Italy in general. Unification was a disaster for Italy, especially for Sicily and the South. The Savoy monarchy couldn't possibly grip the extent of endemic corruption in the South. There was no "state" to replace the Bourbon Monarchy .......only corruption/Mafia which quickly filled the vacuum & we are all aware of the Sicilian diaspora which quickly followed. A beautiful book about the "grandeur of decline" and the human condition!

Very well said! I have friends who are from the south of Italy and they say there is still a lot of tension between the north and south today.

@@mattsbookshelf4084 you might also like "I Vicere" by DeRoberto. It is the Sicilian view of the aristocracy from the servant's quarters...the antithesis of The Leopard.
