In this video:
In the early going, knighthood was an honor earned by those who had distinguished themselves in battle in some significant way or otherwise had made themselves into an absolutely exceptional soldier through many years of training. Later, the honor became somewhat more exclusive, generally limited to nobility or those who were the children of knights, but still typically requiring extensive military training. In modern times of course, in places like the UK, knighthoods are typically granted for all manner of services to a nation, regardless of whether the person has any military training whatsoever. As for the U.S. Medal of Honor, first introduced in 1861, much like in the earliest days of knighthood, this is earned via some extremely heroic act done in aid of the U.S. military. But what do you actually get out of either of these things (or both, as it’s possible to both be knighted and receive a Medal of Honor)? And, if you only received one, which would be more beneficial to you post honor?

There's a Marine that received the Medal Of Honor after throwing his helmet over a grenade in Iraq and laying on the helmet to take the brunt of the explosion. He died but his name lives on because he has a Arleigh Burke class destroyer named after him. The USS Jason Dunham. When the ship was launched his mom was given the honor of breaking the bottle of champagne across the bow.

That "free seats on military flights" is going to get a lot more awesome when the Space Force gets up and running.

A Knighthood is not the British Equivalent to the Medal of Honour the British Equivalent is the Victoria Cross.

The difference is Medal of Honor doesn't feel like a reward to the people who get it. It's a solemn reminder.

You salute the medal, not the rank.

Just a quick clarification. I am a veteran US Army Paratrooper and was stationed at Fort Bragg. While I learned it might not be a formal regulation, you were ALWAYS taught to salute the medal of honor of the recipient wearing it, regardless of rank. That being said, just to clear up some confusion, you salute the MEDAL not the ribbon. Usually a active duty MOH recipient in dress uniform (unless attending a formal ceremony or drill) would be wearing a standard ribbon rack with the MOH displayed and not the medal around their neck. In that instance you do not have to salute. And I can tell you all MOH recipients would not walk around day to day with the medal around their neck, even though it's their right. A true warrior is humble.

The honor from receiving the MOH is greater than the honor of a knighthood too. The latter is "Oh, you're famous and respected" or more commonly "Oh you work for the government"

The US Constitution prohibits any serviceman from accepting any title of nobility or honour w/o permission of the Congress. Gen. Patton had to refuse.

An interesting outlook on the Medal of Honor was presented by Delta Force Sergeant Major Thomas Payne. He said he's not a recipient, but a guardian. The Medal honors his brothers who didn't make it back.

My great uncle Marine Sgt. Ross F. Gray was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic action on Iwo Jima during WWII. Later the Navy named a frigate in his honor, The USS Gray. My grandmother (his sister) christened the ship.

As a brand new soldier on my first assignment, I briefly served with Medal of Honor recipient Sergeant Major Jon Cavaiani. When he was preparing to leave for his final duty assignment, as an ROTC advisor here in California, I asked him: “Sergeant Major, you have The Medal, you can go wherever you want in the Army, why an ROTC assignment?” He answered, “You’re right. It’s my home (California), it’s a college, and I own vineyards nearby”.

Knighthood is now the Queens way of honoring her favorite enterainers. Somewhat of a Royal BAFTA or Oscar.
