Mess Chief = Chief petty officer (CPO) is the seventh enlisted rank (paygrade E-7) in the United States Navy and U.S. Coast Guard, is above petty officer first class (paygrade E-6) and below senior chief petty officer(paygrade E-8) & Master chief petty officer(paygrade E-9) Petty officers of all grades possess both a rate (the enlisted term for rank) and rating (job). The full title is a combination of the two. Thus, a master chief petty officer with the rating of fire controlman would properly be called a master chief fire controlman.
As a German worker I can say that EVERY person I know works a lot more than 28 hours a week (although not sure how that number was calculated). Me and my wife (having 2 small kids) work 30 hours a week which provides hardly enough money AND time for our kids.
You have lots of kind hearted, good people in the comments who pick being ugly but likeable, but anyone who's ever set foot in a social setting knows hotness more than counterbalances any degree of annoyingness. I don't like it, but it's just how the world works.
To end the rumours, in Germany you have at least 26 days Off by law, common is 30 days off. Your sick days are unlimited If a doctor confirms it. And you Work 40h a week. With a Union, you might Work less Like 35 to 38 hours a week. Greetings from Germany, great Show.
Oh, there's all sorts of tells that the military had to clamp down on. the GPS feature of Fitbits and smart watches were giving away both the wearer's location and outlines of military installations because that data was uploaded to publicly available web sites dedicated to exercise and fitness. One of the network techs I used to work with was a former Military Intelligence officer. One of his assignments was to find these tells and correct them. He said he could identify which platoon was getting ready to mobilize based on their pizza orders. The units would require their members to stay on the base without leave the night or two before they were to ship out, and pizza delivery orders would spike in that timeframe. (And this was in the 1990's, before Uber Eats and online ordering.) Another op they'd run was to hang out at the Officer's Club with the significant others of the officers on deployment to see what information they could pick up on. And it led to one of his buddies being fired for sleeping with the wife of an officer on deployment.
Robert Nicholas Williams (May 2, 1953 - January 25, 1979) was an American factory worker who was the first known human to be killed by a robot. While working at the Ford Motor Company's Michigan Casting Center, Williams was struck and killed by the arm of a robotic transfer vehicle.
The JS library you were thinking of is Polyfill, and it wasn't "made" by russians, it was hosted as a supposed CDN mirror of the original, but it turned out to inject malicious code. I don't remember for sure, but it might have been the chinese who were doing it in this case, not russians.
I don't remember exactly what the article I read said, but I believe it was referring to the "Chief's Mess". Basically the 'association' of chiefs on the boat (or other command), name derived from the *literal* chief's mess which would be their own dining area. Which may or may not actually exist on this ship, but carriers definitely do have them. It would be like you guys collectively talking about each other as "the office", but you're referring to the people there, not the actual space. Or it could be literally the fact that this particular senior chief's role was to be in charge of the mess, I'd have to go look up the details again.
I suspect one part of the reason that the mathematically verifiable voting algorithms have not caught on is that, from the little I have seen, it's fairly difficult to explain to non-technical people how they work and are able to provide both verifiability and anonymity. Put pieces of paper that don't have any names in a box" is pretty easy to understand... Obviously a lot of people are ok with full computer voting systems though, so maybe it's not that...
We're in a bubble. Most people barely know how to add (and worse don't know how to remove) browser extensions. They wouldn't be okay with 'it's secure, trust me bro'. Vote by paper mail is far easier and more secure than the already secure enough old fashioned voting. There has never been an instance of enough fraud to swing an American election. Outside of SCOTUS shenaniganry and peeps conceeding too quick.
The only reason that the illicit Wifi was able to remain on the ship as long as it did was the corruption present in the CPO mess, the lying on behalf of the Command Senior Chief to the CO, and that the ship is a LCS and your typical small boy DDG/CG. The LCS is a much smaller crew than the typical warship and such an alteration would have been discovered near-immediately and squashed. The fact that the Senior Chief was born of the IT rating and didnt understand or care about this basic COMSEC violation tells me that she didn't know a damn thing about her source rating and was more than likely a collateral duty hog bent on ladder climbing rather than actually doing her job. And it's people like that, that are the reason the Navy is so jacked up at senior enlisted levels.
The problem set out by the 'screen time' guidance is real, but the recommendation is terrible. The actual problem here is that social media are designed to exploit, and that is legitimately a problem especially for children, but then regulate that! Instead of misrepresenting the problem as "screens" and causing a whole lot of collateral damage (like social isolation for marginalized folks). And if you want to do something about that as a parent, then help your kids find non-exploitative apps, sites and services instead. Those that actually respect your mental health, agency, and privacy.
If people move to open source distributed/decentralized encrypted chat tools like SimpleX, Briar, Matrix, Session, etc. It'll be interesting to see the response.
Longer episodes please. Let’s negotiate and compromise at 45 minutes. I know I’m not the only one here that has an attention span that hasn’t been ruined by the internet.
Navy Chief here: The Chiefs' Mess is the Senior Enlisted crew in the Navy. There's a lot I could say, but basically Officers run the Navy; Chiefs make the Navy run. Anyways, the "mess chief" referenced is the Command-level ranking Chief. Effectively the most senior Enlisted member in charge of the Chiefs Mess. I can't comment on the how or why but things such as unsanctioned WiFi tends to fall on the senior leadership when there's a high level issue- I believe she was relieved according to Navy Times.
@Level1Techs ^^^ this. Plus the fact that she was on an LCS. Those things are crap and Austal is in serious legal hot water for screwing Uncle Sam. The Manchester is 8 years old and ALREADY scheduled to be decommissioned (like all the Austal models). Bet a deployment on a defective boat is boring AF and the tasking is pointless. This is understandable.
How hilarious a chief gets fired for something as silly as illegal internet when bullying, rape and abuse, not to mention suicide rates beyond the pale haven't invoked any action. She probably got fired because it got to the news
That statistic that the germans work less is not true. When it comes to full time workers we are at pretty much the same level as other european countries. That statistic ist the mean working hours of "every working person above 15 years of age". So If youre working for 3 hours a week distributing newspapers you are included in the statistic. At 15 years youre most likely in school which is another 25 hours a week excluding breaks and homework. I find it hard to believe that any other age bracket has a less busy schedule than a school kid. So what this bank guy is essentially saying is that the german economy is failing because education is taking to much time from the workers. Clearly he is economically illiterate.
I mean Im that red headed guy who has heard multiple times, women go 'red headed guys are so hot', look at me and then say not you. XD In saying that I get along with nearly everyone. So ive lived the latter. The former sounds worse to me though so Ill stick with what I have
Those "stinky sailors"! How is this even a thing?!? I thought we've learned that Starlink customer nodes can be easily spotted/geo-located (and "neutralised") by SIGINT stuff - hasn't that been the big worry in Ukraine?!? For fox sake, it's the cook, again - it's always the cook! LOL, someone neglected to tell the cook, what opsec and radio-silence means! 🤣
I think she was not only a Mess Chief, but she is a chief petty officer, culinary specialist and former Navy SEAL operator with top training in martial arts, explosives, special-weapons and tactics. Wait wait wait...NM... I am confusing her with Casey F. Ryback a fictional character and action hero played by Hollywood action star Steven Seagal
I was really engaged with the topics discussed in this episode. Speaking of engagement, for anyone in cold marketing, Filter Bounce is essential. You get precise email verification and keep that bounce rate super low. At $10 a month, and you get 300 free verifications monthly. Honestly, it is saved my campaigns multiple times.
No Wendell, we can't because we don't want to go underground for the rest of our lives - apparently. Also, sadly, by revolting against it all its easy to turn yourself into an outside, I made the experience many times these past years, At this point im so disillusioned by everything politics/troublesome institutions like psychiatry or CDC or public news outlets that I just can't participate in a discussion about it anymore, even though I know exactly what I talk about.
@Level1Techs hey i checked the price on a Samsung Q2U mic; would anyone suggest something that's better? it comes with all the wires and tripod on ebay, I been drinking so i'ma not purchase tonight, but man that is too sweet to pass up as a first mic; if u know better or better with software support please lemme know :)
Regarding crypto securities. It's really simple. If it has a pre-mine, a pre-sale, a dev subsidy in the block rewards, is proof of stake or masternode; then it is a security. If it is fair launch and proof of work, then it is commodity (and real cryptocurrency). If it is Ethereum, then it is an unregistered security that has the primary purpose of creating more unregistered securities.
I am absolutely shocked military ships dont have hardware devices that listen de-auth attack, and pinpoint the location of any access point when it has gone dark.
Yea I thought that was strange too. But maybe when they are full dark there is no signals whatsoever including ones that would be listening for something? Idk. You’d think they would train servicemen not to be addicted to their phones and devices at this point lol
The City of Columbus ransomware attack fallout reminds me of the incident years back where the online state database for teachers had the complete list of teachers and their SSN's IN THE CODE and hitting F12 revealed the list. A reporter found this out by accidentally hitting F12, reported it to the proper authorities, and waited until after they fixed the site to release the story on it. The people he reported it to were very appreciative of both him telling them and waiting to publish the story. They were even going as far as doing something for him to show their appreciation... And then the story broke and the governor at the time got wind and publicly accused the reporter of hacking and HAD HIM ARRESTED. Even after the public backlash and cries of support, the stupid governor doubled down on it, saying all sorts of technically illiterate things. The charges were dropped against the reporter, and he was given the thanks that was due to him. I want to say it was either Missouri or Tennessee, and I can't remember the names of the players.
Yep, Missouri. I remember being absolutely shocked at how incompetent their governor was. Someone who doubles down on such an obvious mistake should never be allowed to hold office of any form again.
Snapchat is already full of ads, adding more will make me stop using it. At this point i only use Snapchat to talk with people i might hook up with. Its a chat app, they just keep waiting money adding pointless stuff like AI
Engagement challenge: Would you rather work on an Alaskan crab fishing boat for a season or be berated by a group of middle school girls who know all of your fears and insecurities?
I remember buying Amiga and ST games in the 90s and the very first page of the user manual told you to make a copy of the game disk and use that instead of the original.
Chief petty officer is in charge ot the other petty officers and below. It's like a seargent. So of course the mess needs leaderships. Ha. Leaderships. See what I did there?
tbf if you're on any ship other than a submarine its not like your position is that hard to figure out. Warships often broadcast their location to nearby ships to alert them of their position. Even when they turn that off there are satellites and other ships also marking the warships in their system which is usually shared out.
It's not an impossible task to be sure, but it's not as trivial as you're making it sound. The ocean is fucking HUGE. If they want to, ships CAN make it hard to find them. Warships especially. Battlefield intelligence is a HUGE undertaking, and little things you can do to give yourself an advantage there can really have a big impact. Or vice versa. It is well known soldiers' cell phone signals and social media postings have/are being used for targeting in Ukraine, for example. Bottom line is, unauthorized emissions/comms of ANY kind on board a warship that the CO is not in control of is just super not okay.
This video made me think about effective communication. Cold emailing is a goldmine if done right. Do You Mail has been fantastic for me. Unlimited email sending from unlimited domains. Automated DNS configurations? Count me in! The cost-effectiveness at $40/month is just the cherry on top. If you are still skeptical about cold emailing, give it a go.
If you look at the ranking systems for the US Navy, there are several titles in the Enlisted/Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO) that have the word Chief in the name. It's kind of like Sergent in the US Army and US Air Force. That part doesn't have anything to do with who's in the Mess cooking. (Other than those people have been in the navy for a while.) The NCO in the story was a Senior Chief Pety Officer (E-8) and got busted one step down to Chief Petty Officer (E-7). It translates out to she was pretty high up on the pay ladder and got busted down a rank. The effective punishment was going from $62,579 - $89,248 per year as an E-8 to $43,499 - $78,188 per year as an E-7. (This is per the Federal Pay website.)
Such a great episode! Quick question for business folks: have you considered cold emailing? Do You Mail has been my secret weapon. The ability to create unlimited email IDs and domains is way more useful than you might think. The high delivery rates are solid. Honestly, for $40/month, it is a no-brainer.
