Agreed, that's why we're here these stories we could read anywhere a big part of it is also their banter, stories, life experiences, and opinions on the topics that they're covering
26:11 Is like when Mr. Mackey is talking about drugs to the class and says something along the lines of "Maybe I shouldn't have just told you all of that".
16:00 Subaru's safety Asist are great, and the brand has kept prices down and yet consumers let the Legacy go extinct, It doesn't help that most consumers buy brands off the name and scam themselves
It’s a proprietary format. You have to go through the trouble of converting it into a usable one if you want to migrate it off platform. If you don’t do this and Audible is shut down you lost all your purchases.
13:28 the only phone calls I answer nowadays is from close family and friends, my bank is an a-hole that shares my phone number with telemarketers. It always starts with a "thank you for being a loyal customer to our bank, here's a special offer to drain your money on insurance that will probably reject your claim when it matters".
I'm not complaining, because I'm not paying you anything, but I do like the longer episodes. I like listening to you guys while doing things around the house. And the quality is good regardless of the quantity.
"This is your Driving Assistant! It appears that you have just forcefully pressed the brake while driving at speed exceeding 90 km/h! Unfortunately, your Brake Subscription is expired. Would you like to renew your Brake Subscription now? Note: the Brake Subscription Plus will decrease the time between pressing the brake and stopping by 10%. Would you like to learn more about the Brake Subscription Plus?"
The propriatary audible format can be converted into mp3 using open source tools. You could even setup a cron job that detects if you or a family member/friend got a new audio book, converts them to mp3 and uploads them to you jellyfin server ... or so i've heard.
These episodes may be posted late for Americans, but lovely to wake up to as a European. Glad I never spent a cent on audible. I just got a free token or two, used those, then said I wanted to cancel and that the prices were too high, they then gave me an additional token lol.
Amazon contracts out through route bidding, and pallets of Amazon goods are transported by the winning bidder from warehouse to rural USPS post offices, in my experience. I work as a contracted driver by USPS and on my routes, seems like a new Amazon driver in a different unmarked box truck every week. I'm not sure how encompassing this is, but Postmasters have told me Amazon pays USPS pennies on the dollar to deliver Amazon packages (I think pertaining mainly to rural) . USPS carriers are underpaid and overworked generally as it is, and to multiply their work load without any pay increase or better benefits is astounding, on top of the layering of bullshit for other reasons.
At this point I've gone full Batllestar Galactica when looking for cars. Old only; ie. no networked computers, no nanny features(beyond abs or airbags), no fly by wire controls. Besides cost, complexity, and size, you've pointed out many many times what a nightmare modern cars are for privacy or right to repair or even ownership now with subscription hardware
Having the little light in the side mirror of your car that indicates if there's a car next to you or not is truly amazing. I won't buy another car without it. Less worry about people in your blind spot and the ability to super easily know if someone is next to you makes the driving experience so much less stressful.
i am gen X and i hate answering the phone. I remember a day where a phone ringing was an exiting event where the person on the other end was going to be some one i knew Or a fun interaction with a wrong number. now its probably some b-s so why bother.
Oh, last week I picked up the phone because I was expecting a call, and it was a cold robo scam call. I've avoided being on a spam list for well over a year, and the one time I pick up the phone because I expected a call, I got put on a "gullible list". RIP this phone number, time to get a new one.
Still not sure AMD are turning a profit from AI. If it weren't for VCs gulping down hype, I'm not sure NVIDIA would be turning a profit from it either.
Enough studies have been done that they are going to be forced to bring back physical buttons and knobs for common used features. It’s been proven that screens take to long to operate even when you’re familiar w/ the car. The manufacturers have gotten enough bad feed back from the customers and some have already said they’re going to back to a max of both.
All FedEx ground packages are delivered by subcontractors only the small vans (express) are really FedEx. That's most of why FedEx sucks and most businesses use FedEx because it's like 3% cheaper and their service is the worst. I'd use USPS first then UPS and lastly, DHL if possible before FedEx.
My mom just got a hybrid sorento, loves it. I couldn't convince her to go full EV. She says she's used one tank of gas in a month, most of that because the engine turns itself on to do 'maintenance checks' and whatnot. Not because she's going over the 40mi range. People don't need 400 mile, 9000lbs, supercars. I've been super happy with my 2017 bolt. It's got all but one of the features I car about, and I could technically add adaptive cruise if I really wanted thanks to DIYers. That hybrid will need all the maintenance of an old gas car, while also having fewer of the benefits of a full EV. It's not quick, it's still stinky and poisonous, it's giant. Small and simple.
Know what would be extra amazing besides cheaper vehicles? Give me a SMALL car non DI motor without a CVT which gets good gas mileage. Give me a modern car without the BS the size of a Geometro wagon at a rock bottom price. There seems to be 2 sizes of cars these days, the Nissan Sentra size, and the "compact" vehicles which are the size of family sedans from 2 decades ago. There is no reason why a modern Prius, and Civic are as big as my '09 Accord.
Man, that's sad about AnandTech. Referenced them ever since they started :(. And yeah, lol, Nvidia is crushing them with their "four elephants, one gpu" philosophy ;).
Work around the AI tools with black markets. A wants a widget. B gets a lower price. A pays B his price and half the difference to purchase it for A. Isn't the future going to be fantastic, especially when nobody can get a paying job hence nobody is buying all these expensive AI made toys. I wonder how that will work out. {^_-}
Growing up there was a 'Gold's Grocery' a few blocks from my house. Just a tiny grocery store. Then 2 Safeways, and Albertsons, and a King Soopers all opened up within a mile of it. They couldn't compete and closed. Now I live in rural-ish CO and there are no grocery stores within a 10m drive of me, even worse for the people around here who don't have cars. There is a dollar general, but that's not groceries. That's overpriced and overprocessed tripe that should not be consumed by anyone. Food deserts are real, they suck, and they're caused by the lack of real competition amongst the big players. Those big players are also feeling the squeeze of the biggest players. Eat the rich, cuz we can't get groceries.
I always was thinking, AI is a software-thing but not specific hardware. I would love to get explained what kind of specific hardware is needed for AI. What kind of registers NVidia and AMD are using in the chips to do AI? Btw. I love this format!
13:28 Mother of omelettes I hate phone calls. Why? Do I even need to say why? Imagine trying to hear a broken English accent through low quality garbled noise, when better alternatives exist! VOIP/video conferencing/texting/email are significantly better at their function.
I’m in an average of two different rental cars a week and average 30k miles a year. Most of the ADAS systems are garbage and make you a lazier driver. Lane keep assist is at the top of that list. If you can’t keep it between the lines on your own then you should not be driving. But there are useful ones. Blind spot detection is great. Especially w/ the size of modern vehicles. Kia doesn’t the best and shows you the camera on the gauge cluster when you use your turn signal to change lanes. Rear parking cameras make it extremely easy to back into a space. Which is what everyone should do because it’s safer. You have full view of everything around you when you do this. Unlike when you have to back out of a space where you have no view of cars are parked next to you. Radar cruise control is great if implemented correctly. Otherwise regular cruise control is fine. Radar cruise does cause to pay less attention as it makes you complacent. Auto crash detection systems are hit or miss. There are a lot of false positives where the vehicle slams on the brakes for no reason. Everything else is not needed. You don’t need auto parking. You don’t need FSD. But I will admit Blue Cruise and GM’s version work well in their gated environments. These systems make you lazy and you don’t pay attention to what’s going on around you while you’re hurtling down the highway at 70mph in a two plus ton vehicle.
Hollywood remasters are usually better for a few reason vs AI upscales. I like the version of SG1 that people complain is "too blurry". Tried an AI upscale version, it was awful. People want to oversharpen everything and it creates too much aliasing and and other artifacts imo.
The purpose of a vehicle is to go from point A to point B without dying... The more "stuff" in a car the more you are distracted from the task at hand which is paying the fuck attention to the road ahead of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I still have vehicles with no computers, and the one vehicle I do own that has a computer is from 2002.
I remember my great grandpa Fridge, it was bought on the mid to late 60's first time it had to be repaired was in 1988. Yeah, up to a point I miss the old fashion way of building stuff, yes they had excessive safety margins by today's standards but now we're on the extreme oposite which is definitely not good, can't we have a middle ground quality wise please?
Reddit banned me from r/cyber truck for joining r/cyberstuck. Now I don’t belong to either one. Problem solved. They can’t have criticism about those which sponsor the site. Reddit is toast
A trick i use to keep the annoying phone call down......Never setup your voicemail, most of the automated callers will delete numbers that don't fit their profile. But i was thwarted with the last apple IOS update. kinda screwed that up.
Tbh I get it but it makes me want to stop watching. They said long videos don't work, only short, but multiple ones 2 to 4 hours coming out and people seeing the same. If they keep getting shorter I just won't return. If I wanted what works in algorithm I'd watch mainstream click bait
I’m glad Ryan called out the bit rate issue with old MP3s. Like Wendell I too have an insane amount of old MP3s I cherish but sadly they are a much lower bitrate than I can get from a hi fi streaming service. It’s a real bummer when you have a nice audio setup
Its not just millennials and genz, I'm genx and I don't know anyone who answers their phone any more. Why would you answer any call thats not in your contacts? It's just spam. If it's important they'll leave a voice mail.
For the 11:45 story, this is why, imo, in the future we will see a rise of ethical hacking business', that will agree to "hack" or jailbreak your device and allowing you to use it. All it would take is 1 state in BFE to pass this and it's game over for this kind of crap.
Literally the only reason I would consider a modern car is because of the driving assist tech. Most of my driving has been in a Hyundai Palisade and I have the auto cruise control enabled basically all of the time. The only time it really annoys me is if the car in front of me is making a right turn and the car will assume they are stopping and so I press the gas to tell the car 'no, it's safe, keep going' and then the car starts beeping like crazy and accusing me of not watching my surroundings. I mean car - you're the one that was trying to get me rear ended for no reason so STFU.
20:44 I got banned from a fashion group because I was in another group and told the mod it was F-ing stupid. So the mod filed a complain about harassment and I was blocked from reddit for a week. I told reddit it was F-ing stupid and deleted my account. The only thing I miss is to be able to upvote some good replies.
5:50 Audible is actually a great deal. There's a software floating around called inaudible that allows you to turn audible files into m4a or mp3. Getting an audiobook a month for 10€ each has been a great deal for me so far.
So when are you all going to have an episode that's just putting your mouths on the mics and just screaming while cycling through headlines? Cause I feel like we're spiraling down to that future.
did you mean dollar general is closing in on big lots sales? I could find no reference to dollar general being affected by big lots declaring bankruptcy. That would suck if they did, but I get it. I dont go there much anymore anyway.
14:42 - Cars today have $20K in useless tech, and still put in an audio system that sounds likes a Dollar General AM/FM Alarm Clock. How about this, give me AWD, plush seats, and a great sounding radio and dump all the other trash.
I don't mind lane assist. It's easy to turn off and I use the setting where it intervenes as close as possible to the line. So it feels like it's only activating when it's actually needed (or close to). Other stuff are just poorly calibrated and scream at you when they activate. But really there's a reason why they put this stuff in the base trims of cars. It costs them nothing but they can say they have features to pump the price up.
related to bad internet challenges, i have been fed a new youtube challenge recently, it's called the "The 4 Beers 2 Cigarettes" challenge. wish i was joking
Dunno about you, I love the heck out of my lane assist and adaptive cruise control. Not so necessary in a city, but worth it on highways stove people drive over daily
Thank you for making the timeline less dark. Or at least adding amusing highlights to the dark? I swear there's a tortured analogy here and not just gibberish.
15:54 Of the several cars I've had over the years from different manufacturers, the lanes assist in a Hyundai has been the only one to work correctly. If it is turned on with cruise control, it will drive itself on a relatively straight road
When i had subscriptions to things like audible, i always recorded the stuff i bought. Need to get back into that habit, the amount of data i waste on this stuff is bonkers.
18:04 The rich man achieves brain scan and lives in the machine, only to receive a new plan for a subscription service to keep the machine powered up.😮
My car has parking-assist rather than lane assist or self-parking, and I turned it off because it was giving me shit instructions and needs to detect room for opening the doors all the way before it says that's a parking spot.
Dollar stores have pushed out so many other stores in rural areas and their prices aren't a deal. Not to mention the terrible conditions of the stores and lack of employees.
