A review of the Lexham Old Testament Apocrypha (LOTA), ISBN: 9781683596615. This book is a glued paperback.
The text in this volume is arranged in a single-column, paragraph format, and printed in a 9 to 9.5 point font. The paper is heavy, matte, and opaque. Dimensions in inches are 9 x 6 x 1.
All of the material in this volume was published previously in the Lexham English Septuagint except for an essay on the Apocrypha, book introductions, and 2 Esdras. The version of 1 Enoch included here is based on a manuscript "discovered in a Christian grave in the city of Panopolis in Upper Egypt." It covers most of 1 Enoch chapters 1 through 36, so much of the material preserved in Ethiopic is absent.
The following books and fragments are present:
Tobit (shorter version)
Tobit (longer version)
Judith
Greek Esther
Wisdom of Solomon
Wisdom of Sirach
Baruch
The Letter of Jeremiah
Additions to Daniel (Old Greek)
Additions to Daniel (Theodotion)
1 Maccabees
2 Maccabees
1 Esdras
The Prayer of Manasseh
Psalm 151
3 Maccabees
2 Esdras
4 Maccabees
The Psalms of Solomon
1 Enoch

As Aaron Mueller has pointed out, there is an error at the 17:51 point in the video. The reference there should be St. Basil's letter 8.10, not 10.2. Excellent! Great Review! I'll probably get this. 2 Esdras is one of my favorite books in the Bible so I’m looking forward to reading a new translation!

I really appreciate Lexham's efforts here. Protestants seem more interested in the "Apocrypha" now than they've ever been which is a very encouraging development. It's all very edifying literature. Hope to see this in a hardcover eventually and now that Lexham is moving away from exclusively translating the Septuagint with the inclusion of 2 Esdras, I also hope to see a full translation of Enoch in a later edition. Having them all in one place would be a godsend. Wisdom, Sirach, 2 Esdras, 4 Maccabees and Enoch are some of the most edifying literature I've ever read. I'd throw the Shepherd of Hermas up there with them too. Christians read them for centuries, in the case of Wisdom and Sirach many still do-I think we do ourselves a tremendous disservice not doing so as well

We could use that you'd define for us why we have this volume... Your historical opinion is certainly good content that I feel you'd accurately convey the reality of it's track in our history for lack of better words.

For anyone interested in this work, I bought it and I like it, but you need a deep dive into specific notation, I cannot recommend highly enough the deSilva Introduction to the Apocrypha textbook. It is 5 stars. I have been collecting Apocrypha texts lately, and deSilva is the man. The notes in the Harper Collins Study Bible or the Oxford Annotated are also great for full apocrypha (2 Esdras, 4 Maccabees). The cool thing about Lexham's is that it comes with 1 Enoch, which is a bonus.

Would you ever do a video comparing different translations of the apocrypha? NRSV vs ESV for example

Thank you for this review. I was wondering about this edition. I already have the NETS Bible, so I was wondering if this was redundant. I do like book introductions, but I won't hurry to get a copy.

Thanks for commenting, James. It _is_ largely redundant to the Lexham English Septuagint.

Hello Grant, excellent review as always. I appreciate your thoroughness. I have two questions: 1. I have the NETS and wanted your opinion if you believe it’s translations of the “apocrypha” is superior. Or would you recommend having both if they vary significantly in their translations. 2. Do you know where I can find a list of references for all “apocryphal” books that I can write in my NETS? I would find it helpful to see if and how the canonical books in the NT reference them or how they reference OT scripture. I found the references you mentioned in the video to be insightful which prompted me to ask this. Thank you for your videos!

Last question, is the “1 Enoch: A New Translation “ the same as the “Hermeneia” version by the same authors?

Hello I just stumbled across your channel I was looking to buy the KJV 1611 Anniversary Edition. What you did a very excellent job on your review of that I'm new to this so I was going to ask you what is your favorite version of the Bible or see you have a lot of reviews mine is definitely without question the only Bible KJV in my opinion. Blessings Ken

I'll let R Grant Jones answer for himself, but I do believe that he also generally prefers the Authorized Version.

It seems to me that if you buy a Lexham Septuagint and the New translation of the Septuagints (NETS) you will get a much better value for your money i.e you get. two different translations of the Septuagint that in total contain all the books.
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones Год назад
I think that's largely accurate, but I don't believe the LES or NETS include the apocalyptic 2 Esdras specially translated for this volume. 2 Esdras in NETS (called Esdras B in LES) is Ezra-Nehemiah. Thanks for commenting!
@ionutpaun9828
@ionutpaun9828 Год назад
@@RGrantJones Okay, however you can find Esdras 2 online, copy and paste it into a word document and then print it for very little money. Why buy a whole book just for a `sub-book'?
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones Год назад
@@ionutpaun9828 - I agree that doing so isn't economical; but I wanted to clarify the situation with respect to 2 Esdras.

Does this translation use gender neutral language like the Lexham English Septuagint?
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones Год назад
It _is_ the Lexham English Septuagint, minus the books in the Hebrew canon, and with the edition of the apocalyptic 2 Esdras, book introductions, and an essay on the so-called apocrypha.

You said you wouldn't call all these books apocryphal. Care to explain which ones you don't?
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones Год назад
Thanks for the question, legacyandlegend, and for watching the video carefully enough to formulate that question. Upon reflection, I'm not comfortable using the term "apocrypha" of any of the works included in this volume. To be clear, that doesn't mean I consider them canonical. I like Athanasius's three categories: canonical, anagignoskomena, and apocryphal, the anagignoskomena being worthy to be read, and the apocryphal works to be avoided.
