One point, On Constitutional Reform, Lib dems specify that they want STV on the manifesto on their website. it says: Ensure no politician can take you for granted, by introducing proportional representation by the Single Transferable Vote for electing MPs, and local councillors in England.
@user-pn4py6vr4n
@user-pn4py6vr4n 7 дней назад
That is what I, as an Australian, have been screaming at the US and UK to implement for the past decade. FPTP is grossly undemocratic, and makes it incredibly difficult to elect minor parties. As an Australian, I don't have to vote for the least bad of the big two parties for my vote to matter. I vote for my minor parties of choice first, then my major party of choice, then all of the other minor parties that shouldn't be allowed to run a lemonade stand, much less government.

I'd prefer something similar to the additional member system like we have in Scotland (although I would take any PR over FPTP). I think the best way to implement it would be a ranked choice constituency vote and then a proportional top up system at the regional level.

the oil firms will just pass on the costs to consumers. like they did with high oil costs in 2022. you can be sure that oil and gas wont lose, just the people that rely on petrol to get to work, or gas to heat their house. Same with the banks. BOE will hold intrest nice and high for an extra quarter to inflict pain on the population. Our entire tax code needs descrambling. The UK tax code is 10 million words and 21,000 pages. that's about 12.5 times the number of words in the Bible (800,000 words). The Hong Kong tax code, which comes in at 276 pages, is about 70 times smaller or 1.5% the size. International tax lawyers generally agree that it is the most efficient. fewer loopholes means less wiggling out of tax.

People care about immigration, there is an issue, acting like it isn't won't win an election. Under corbyn, guy was great but, seriously an unelectable party leader is worse than one that can stop Tory rule, nationalise the things we need and stop the NHS being privatised. When left goes too far left, they ALWAYS lose the election, and it's all for nothing.

I think at this point Lords reform is a waste of political capital. The irony is that, at present, the unelected chamber is acting more in the benefit of Britain than the Tories. Equally, PR for the Commons is far far more important, and it would be a mistake to do both with the same parliamentary term
@disdisc
@disdisc 7 дней назад
The double edged sword of the house of lords is that they are in for life and don't have to worry about the short term and reflection like politicians but on the flip side if you have a bad pm who promotes a bad lord they will forever be bad.

@@disdisc It's a complex problem, because they're appointed for life the whip has no control (a good deal of Tory appointees have voted against the Government). @adventtrooper
@adventtrooper 6 дней назад
@@getnohappy I agree. Reforming the Lords is a low priority, yet could easily happen as a way to deflect attention from the problems in the Commons. @A190xx

The Lords has historically worked well as a check for government. If we get rid of it, we will have more politicians picking up fixed salaries and pensions whether they turn up or not and more elections. Have you seen Bournemouth beach recently on a sunny day,? good luck finding a parking space that's all I can say. Look it doesn't take a genius to realise that quality of life is going down for the majority of people as the population reaches new heights literally day by day. It actually isn't mentioned enough that we are a relatively small country with a large population relative to size already. Do we really want less countryside and wild places as more and more houses, hospitals, roads etc need to be built in our constant attempts to keep up with mass immigration only for more people to come in the following year all over again. The UK already has the highest population it has ever had in its entire history, if you have kids that will grow up here you should be concerned about this.

As a young voter myself I do think that the lib dems have a lot of good ideas, however I find the lack of talk on immigration most alarming. In my opinion it is one of the most pressing matters of modern times and affects pretty much all aspects of life from NHS wait times, to house prices and even in some cases violent crime. Not only does ignoring immigration levels mean all these issues are only going to get worse but more and more people are going to keep dying in trying to cross the channel. There is nothing wrong with letting people into the country legally as we have done in the past but that can only happen once we have gotten our net migration numbers down to a reasonable level and given the country time to catch up, otherwise I fear that nothing will ever get improve.
