Great video Kayla! The first time I performed rescue breathing, I was 12 years old and learned it in my junior high health class. The first time I performed CPR was on a neighbor who had an MI while I was washing my Mom's van, and I was 16. After working in EMS for 15 years and now in the hospital, I have about 1500 CPR attempts, and about 100ish saves, and that's with often full ACLS and defib capability. Even though the percentages are small, it's still worth trying, and the effort goes a long way towards helping the family and friends who may be standing by cope with the aftermath, for good or ill. Keep up the good work!

Former EMT here. 95 y/o grandma comment is spot on. Get those DNRs signed folks. It IS what they would want.

Just a note Pediatrics are 30:2 for compressions, unless two rescuer Cpr then it’s 15:2 per AHA guidelines.

You are doing a great job. I took a class 30 years ago but will for sure take another. Also, I will get a device to avoid mouth and nose contact. Keep James living the best life he can. You know we all give a damn.

CPR is very important to know but like she said out in 2 years time and at least 50 cpr patients I had we got a pulse back on 4 and only two come out of the hospital. I look at it as 4 people we gave a chance to and two who’s lives we helped save. I got my AEMT license 4 years ago just to use as a volunteer in my rural community.

RN//Medic here. I want to add my AM to all in this video. While most of the codes I've been involved with ended in death, there were some in which the patient lived and wend home from the hospital. Think about if that were your family and/or friend who was the victim we would want CPR done. It takes some study and effort to learn, but remember that in every CPR event you get sstronger in your CPR skills.

If y'all made "Vomiting is a sign of life!" t-shirts, I would definitely buy a few. Rest in peace, Mr. Yeager. Blessings to his family. May he reside with Him in Heaven Eternal.

I take the BLS & AED classes with my wife because she is in medical school. It’s some great information and good to stay up to date on CPR for adults and kids. Classes are only like $25 and just a few hours. Very valuable.

What no one ever told me about CPR is how many ribs you're going to crack while performing it. I've had to do it once on a car accident victim. It was crack, crack, crack, crack, the first few cycles, then it was all squish.
@CPR12345
@CPR12345 2 года назад
Yes, rib fractures occur. But I guarantee that most of the cracking sound that you heard, and the squish you felt, was actually the cartilage that connects the rib to the sternum (breast bone), that was being separated. And given that it was a car crash victim, it’s entirely possible that several ribs were fractured due to the crash itself.
@flyboy8752
@flyboy8752 2 года назад
@@CPR12345 exactly! The older victims are the most likely to suffer fractured ribs, and even then, it’s still mostly cartilage noises (much like cracking your joints). Either way, it’s definitely better to be the 2nd “relief” rescuer to take over after the first one gets all the crackling done before you jump in to relive them. 🤣

I should have prefaced my previous comment by saying that I am a full-time pediatric emergency room nurse and a paid-on-call EMT, so I have performed CPR hundreds of times, from newborns on up to adults over 100 years old.

Can you do a video on the Australian emergency pain med that they have you breathe thru the green tube .. and why we do not use it here in the US seems it could be a beneficial item
@eugeneabreut960
@eugeneabreut960 2 года назад
Just remember the most important thing, compressions over breaths. 7 year paramedic here. I actually run full codes with intubation, meds, ivs, the whole package. COMPRESSIONS COMPRESSIONS COMPRESSIONS! Until ems arrives. Yes gives breaths but don’t not do compressions to go find your little mouth piece. If you didn’t see them go down, give breaths but if they went down in front of you, just do compressions
@ryans9029
@ryans9029 2 года назад
If you see them go down.. only compressions? Why? If you didn't witness.. give both? Why? Because of "sufficient" oxygen reserves? If you are willing to give breaths... Give them. They are beneficial. Medical personnel always respirate... Telling people to only do compressions on adults was simply to attempt to get more people to actually do CPR.. instead of being afraid of breaths\disease... So thus doing nothing...
@eugeneabreut960
@eugeneabreut960 2 года назад
@@ryans9029 it’s because if you saw them go down, they where just breathing so there blood is still oxygenated.

i did a quick study on CPR after watching my wife be resuscitated in the hospital by doctors ( this circumstance only raises it to 20% survival rate ). although the breathing into the lungs is taught - it is being phased out by teachers. If the heart is not pumping - they really are not getting air to the brain anyway. Also, the cardio shock units are not even close to being as useful as CPR itself.

As far as "doing CPR on your 95 year old Grandma is a dick move" Well you better have a DNR, and not just say you do,or a lawyer saying you do. You HAVE to have it on hand to present to the medics on scene, I've seen terminal cancer patients and elderly both receive care all because a DNR couldn't be provided, they had DNR's but couldn't produce it so they got worked anyway and that's exactly how it will go, it doesn't matter unless it in hands....its a shame but thats how it goes....
@flyboy8752
@flyboy8752 2 года назад
While rescue breaths are VERY important for kids and especially especially infants, hands-only CPR is very effective for most adults. Good to know if you’re worried about the victim vomiting (even with a face shield).

Thanks for the info Kayla. I'm signed up for IAM in November. Does that affect the recommendation to get certified at all?

We still recommend it. IAM is a trauma class so CPR falls outside of the scope of our focus.
