She was one of those women who you could overlook how pretty she actually was. She was brilliant, witty, charming and a true talent. Any chance you get, watch a film that she is in.
She was wonderful. I love the lilting, sing-songy version of her voice that she often used. She was excellent opposite Charles Laughton in the film Rembrandt. She's an entertaining asset to any work in which she appears - I will always watch her!!
A great actress. My grandmother was born in 1905. I’d like to think that, had they met, Elsa and my grandmother would have been friends. RIP Elsa and Grandma. ❤❤🙏🙏
What a coincidence - as I watched her in a TCM 1950 black & white movie last night (early this am) called Mystery Street with Ricardo Montalban and Sally Forrest. It was referred to as film noir. Talented lady!
She was stuck in the type-casting Hollywood file of supporting actresses in the "whacky loveable" folder. Alongside Eve Arden in the comically giftedness folder. Beulah Bondi in the suffering grandma/mother folder though she's younger than the leading lady, Mary Astor in the divine bitch neighbor folder, you know the rest. .. Mary Wickes...and so on. ELSA was a classic trained serious actress, that didn't matter in Hollywood. She didn't look like Vivien Leigh. Great channel 👏.
I remember her in bride of Frankenstein. She was compelling to watch I thought. Charles Laughton played the part of Quasi Modo in another film. I didn’t know they were married.
Of course! Aside from the other roles mentioned I'm now making that connection to her playing Mrs Edna Grundy on the I Love Lucy episode where she's driving the girls toward Florida and each thinks the other is escaped ax m**deress!! Haha!
Yes he was, and she stayed with him anyway, maybe because she loved him, maybe because the marriage worked for her, they acted together in Witness for the prosecution.
Laughton was not bisexual, he was homosexual & Elsa was the ONLY woman he ever slept with. Interestingly, Elsa - who was the precocious offspring of a Bohemian free-thinker & an Uber-Feminist pairing who never married, & ran her own professional theatrical company at age 14 - never suspected a thing. Until she came home early one day & found Charles in a heated argument with a tall, Germanic blond over money. When Laughton tearfully confessed he had been with several male prostitutes on the sofa they sat on, Elsa reaction was: " It's all right. We'll figure things out...... BUT WE'RE GETTING RID OF THE SOFA!" The next morning she woke up to find herself stone deaf. After going to countless specialists with no discernable reason found, one month later she awoke to find her hearing had returned. When she asked her physician what did he think could have been the cause, he stared back at her & replied "I think YOU would be more likely to tell me than I you!". When Lanchester pressed him for an explanation, he explained he suspected she had experienced Psychosomatic Deafness. One month ago she had heard something she didn't want to hear, something that shook her so to the core, that her way of dealing with it was to block out all sound until it had worked through her psychic & allowed her to accept it. Charles & Elsa remained happily married until he died, each remaining lovingly true to the other (in their fashion) with a deep love & respect for the other.
Ofc she was a scorpio lol Besides she's basically rose McGowan who I know was born in 73 otherwise that'd be a cool "confirmation of reincarnation" lmao 🤣
