The Following Video is a continuation of my series on Classical German Philosophy, German Romanticism, German Idealism, Jewish Philosophy and Contemporary German Philosophy (From Eckhart to Heidegger).
For this video, I invited Dr. Alfred Denker who is the director of the European Centre for Heidegger Studies (ECHS).
Dr. Denker helps navigates our viewers through the complex life and thought of the German Philosopher Martin Heidegger (1889-1976)
Our discussion begins with the question "why" ... we contemporary students, and scholars of philosophy/thinking should return to the multilayered thinking of Martin Heidegger Our main discussion revolves around Heidegger's Sein und Zeit (Being and Time) and Heidegger's late philosophical turn into Poetry, Language and Thinking. Dr. Denker also gives us an Indepth biography on Heidegger's family, and his life.
Dr. Alfred Denker is the Director of the European Centre for Heidegger Studies. He is co-editor of the Martin-Heidegger-Gesamtausgabe, founder and co-editor of the Heidegger-Jahrbuch, as well as founder and co-editor of the Martin-Heidegger-Briefausgabe and of the Anuario-Heidegger. Dr. Denker has been working on a three-volume biography of Martin Heidegger.

An interesting introduction to Heidegger's life and work for a general public. This is perhaps not the forum to respond to Dr. Denker's presentation in great detail. But three aspects might deserve a bit more commentary: Firstly, the question to what extent and in what way Heidegger engaged with National Socialism is of course a most difficult one to answer, but it is important to accentuate more strongly the ambiguity in texts like his Rektoratsrede mentioned by Dr. Denker. It is true that Heidegger boldly seeks to reassert the intellectual autonomy of the German university at the beginning of the Nazi rule, but he does so using very deliberately some basic Nazi terminology: He calls upon the university to take "die Führer und Hüter des Schicksals des deutschen Volkes in die Erziehung und Zucht", but also evokes as one of the goals of academic research the "erd- und bluthaften Kräfte als Macht der innersten Erregung und weitesten Erschütterung seines [the German Volk's] Daseins". Thus, to paraphrase the foregoing, Heidegger seeks to walk a dangerous tightrope between putting the German university into the ideological service of National Socialism while also seeking to curtail the authoritarian arbitrariness of Germany's new leaders. Thus, it seems to me, we have to do a better job in accentuating the internal tensions and contradictions immanent to Heidegger's politics and thinking. Second, I like Dr. Denker's allusion to Heidegger's interest in East Asian thought. As I have tried to argue elsewhere, despite his nationalistic tendencies, Heidegger strove towards a decidedly anti-Eurocentric thinking that wanted to explore Classical Japanese (and to some extent Chinese) traditions as a way to critique Western metaphysics and its privileging of visuality as an access to truth, advocating, as Dr. Denker also mentioned, a new way of auditory experience of the world. Thirdly, I applaud Dr. Denkers stress on the continuing relevance of Heidegger for our contemporary world. Like all genuinely great thinkers, Heidegger anticipated developments that he himself could only fathom.

Dear Rolf, thank you for your excellent comment. I agree with you that there is much more to Heidegger's NSDAP involvement than meets the eye and that Heidegger should be held accountable for his antisemitism in the Black notebooks, and his problematic involvement with the National Socialists. The question as to how much of Heidegger's philosophy in the 1930's is tainted by National Socialism has been presented by the critical evaluations of Victor Farias, Emmanuel Faye, Tom Rockmore, Thomas Sheehan and of course Richard Wolin. Perhaps, this video will open much more debate with the good viewers of RU-vid. This series is meant to be both an introduction and an outlet for those who are interested in the history of philosophy. I knew this video would be a bit controversial but the thing to remember for all the viewers and subscribers is that each episode is crafted to be both accessible and educational. I hope they stand as a challenging and exciting medium for everyone. Dr. Denker is a world class scholar and has devoted so much time to the study of Heidegger's philosophy and teaching his thought. My own opinions on Heidegger's involvement are not present in the video and I am glad you are bringing it up now for further discussion. My role as an interviewer is meant to be impartial and to highlight my invited guests knowledge on a philosopher. I would have loved the opportunity to ask the "deep-seated" question of whether Heidegger's political affinities to the National Socialists leaked into his philosophy. What I did enjoy in speaking with Dr. Denker was the very deep biography that Dr. Denker was able to provide, and the thorough analysis of Heidegger's difficult and challenging philosophy over the years. Dr. Denker was able to highlight important alteration in Heidegger's thought from Being and Time to the Origin of the Work of Art. Thank you once again, Rolf for your always thoughtful comments, suggestions and support!

@@TheYoungIdealist Very good comments, Christopher! They clarify some of your own opinions on Heidegger, which you wisely kept out of the interview itself in order to let Dr. Denker express his own thoughts in an unencumbered way. Thanks again for making this thought-provoking video!

Of course, there is much more to be said about Heidegger and his relation and involvement with National Socialism and anti/semintism. This was not the place to discuss it in great detail. We published two volumes of the Heidegger-Jahrbuch on Heidegger and NS, three volumes on the Black Notebooks, and 1 on Heidegger and the Political. I have discussed these topics in dozens of lectures, lecture courses and webinars in the last 15 years. I will continue to do so.

@@alfreddenker9502 I know you have published extensively on the complicated and controversial issue of Heidegger's politics, and one can agree that the entirety of his thinking cannot and should not be reduced to his intellectual commitment to National Socialism. But since this is a forum for introducing philosophers to a general public, perhaps you could add a few succinct comments here, clarifying your own position on the topic?
