The Following video is a slight detour in my ongoing series on Classical German Philosophy. In fact, the focus of this video is on one of Germany's most courageous women philosophers, the brilliant Jewish philosopher and phenomenologist, Edith Stein (1891-1942). Stein converted to Catholicism, becoming a Discalced Carmelite Nun and due to her immense impact on both phenomenology, theology and her devotion to the Christian faith she was canonized as a Martyr and Saint; and is currently one of the patron saints of Europe. Her religious name is Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
To unpack Stein's complex life and dynamic philosophy, I invited a friend of mine, who is an up-and-coming young scholar in the works of the phenomenologists: Edmund Husserl and Edith Stein, Miguel De La Vega, M.A.
Miguel carefully navigates us through Stein's life highlighting her academic career, her activism in Women's rights, and her friendships with Max Scheler and Edmund Husserl. Our discussion leads to an extremely rich conversation on three of Stein's brilliant works: On the Problem of Empathy, Potency and Act, and her Magnum Opus Finite and Eternal Being.
Due to the biological racism of the National Socialists (NAZIS) Stein was captured by the Gestapo and taken to Auschwitz where she was murdered by the Nazis. Stein was a courageous human being, a brilliant philosopher beyond her time, and the hope of this video is to bring more attention to her philosophical writings. I would like to thank Miguel De La Vega for his generous editing, and also for adding pictures to this video. His deep knowledge and passion for Stein's philosophy helps solidify Stein's life and philosophy.
Miguel De La Vega is a researcher in topics related to phenomenology, inner speech, philosophy of mind and the philosophy of cognitive science. He has a Bachelor’s from the Iberoamerican University of Mexico City. And he recently completed a Master’s Degree in Philosophy of Mind and Cognitive Science from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, where he graduated with distinction. He is now pursuing a PHD to further his research about mental acts such as "inner speaking."

There is a new book that was just released on Stein that I have read called "The Personalism of Edith Stein: A Synthesis of Thomism and Phenomenology" by Robert McNamara. It is one of the best books on her later work, with emphasis on Finite and Eternal Being and how that work synthesized her earlier works with the Thomism she had grown so fond of. I think her keenest insights outside of those you two discussed are found in her "Investigation Concerning the State," which I had hoped to see discussed.

McNamara's book - unfortunately, it is too expensive. But I'd love to recommend Alasdair Macintyre's study of Stein's philosophy - this is indeed a great introduction to Stein. The dialogue with Miguel de la Vega shows to me that we need more discussions on Stein. I think she was a very important thinker in that she was one of the few philosophers who managed to find convincing links between the late Medieval scholasticism and phenomenology. Especially her book Finite and Eternal Being is worth reading, for example as a non-nonsense refutation of Heidegger's Time and Being.
