"What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" was done in ONE take. She said that was all she was going to give them, so walked into the studio, the producer cued the orchestra, she came up to the mic -- and less than three minutes later, it was done. One of the all-time classic moments in popular music history.
most of her major recordings were 1 take because she was such a dedicated musician, but didnt want her time wasted. she was a serious musician who couldnt stand people who could not read music well, could play the vibes the piano, the organ, and the French horn, and could tell if one musician in a 20 piece orchestra was off pitch.
I love her music ! Any Winehouse has a rare insight to Dinahs music . Her and Brooks Denton had some great songs . She paced the way for many others in music !
I remember when she died. We lived in Chicago one block from the funeral home and my mother took me with her to the service. I was only three years old.
I agree with you. They need to make a movie of her life as she was a Diva who lived her life to the fullest and she knew herself well. I have enjoyed watching these clips immensely.
What A Difference A Day Makes; Where Are You; If I Were A Bell, Fly Me To The Moon, and Make Someone Happy…and the list goes on and on of songs sung beautifully by Ms. Washington. It truly makes me happy to hear her music, still to this very day.
Charles B. Davis Jr. she was definitely an influence on Aretha but so was Mahalia and CLARA WARD. I will say, I can definitely hear her influence on Aretha and the similarities in their sound. Aretha was more raw in her Atlantic years.
Aretha knew Dinah from Childhood since as originally a gospel singer Dinah and her mother were on the same gospel circuits with Aretha and her father. Even as a jazz and soul singer Dinah sought the advice of CL Franklin Aretha's father as she spent a lot of time in Detroit especialy in the last years of her life when she was married to a Lions NFL player. One of Aretha's first albums when she was still with Columbia was a songs of Dinah Washington album cut right after Dinah died. So there was a close personal connection between Dinah and her family and Aretha Franklin and her family even when Aretha was a child or a teen
Fantastic! Thank you for sharing this. Dinah has always been my favorite singer. It took me several years, but I managed to obtain copies of everything she recorded via vinyl and CD. I am pleased that other still enjoy and recognize her talents.
Singers like Dinah also had excellent musicianship! They had great ears for music, and didn't tolerate bad notes. I can respect them wanting their music to be just right. James Brown was like that too.
she was highly musically educated from childhood, could ply the french horn, improve the arrangements of professionals and usually made her recordings in 1 take
Thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful history of the late great Dinah Washington. Don't know why Lorette Devine was never tapped to play this role. I think that she would be absolutely divine!!!!
My thoughts exactly, as I was watching this video and when I saw her I immediately thought of Loretta Devine. Also why haven't her biography been made into a movie.
I connected with Dinah Washington as kid age 12 I stole my mothers cassette tape which was gifted by my grandmother, my mum let me keep it. Dinah was my introduction to music as well as Elvis Presley and Shirley Bassey.
She tickle me she said she's the real Queen, the one in England a fake. She was so happy before she died, shopping for her two boys and house things her husband she want to lay down, took a sleeping pill too many accidentally over- dose two weeks before Xmas, this really hurts.
Yeah, now it worked! The first two times when I opened, it went back to part 1. Now I watched everything. Thank you so much for sharing. It's wonderful and precious.
Bless your soul great Dinah Washington like many of these great songstresses of that era undisputed talent no nonsense ladies that gave us class, beautiful vocals, and utmost joy . 👑🎹🎷🎻🥁🎺🎤
I loved that. I found myself wanting more. Then I wondered, why hasn't Hollywood made a film about her? And WHO would be qualified to play her? No one has THAT voice...that type of sound.
africanviolet777 Jill Scott's voice doesn't sound anything like Dinah Washington. Perhaps she could copy her. Some people have that skill you know. They can sound like somebody else.
This is an excellent documentary. I loved the interviews with Paul West, Annie Ross and Amy Winehouse. Where is that footage of her singing Make Someone Happy taken from? I wish this were released as a legitimate DVD with every television/video appearance of her included as bonus material. Dinah was one of the greatest singers of all time.
+Scott Merrell I only say that because in her Biography there is mention made of the two at the State.Fair and her dropping that "I've made Night Train Lane happy" line in the song. But its been some years since I read it and I could have the venue wrong or she coulda done that more than once. Also, at our State Fair we had quite a few indoor stages, too. I'll see if I can.find out for sure for you! And Merry Christmas!
This was a great documentary of the late Dinah Washington. It pleases me to learn more about the person behind the songs I heard by her. It brings my pleasure that the late Amy Winehouae spoke on this documentary as well. I am grateful for the full videos available to see for free here. Thank you.
What some people failed to realize is the reason why Dinah Billie Whitney and some of the singers left us so soon is because the turmoil and things that they went to, they didn't have a way to express them selves. It is so sad that they left us to soon.
Billie described it best “ try and live 1000 days in one.” I don’t believe they had a problem expressing themselves I believe they had a problem living healthy lives and they wanted to escape
Wow! Ms. Dinah was Amazing...! Heard of her, but honestly never tuned in to her music. Until now. Listenin to Billie sing lover man brought me here. All to my pleasure. She was phenomenal! Is there a part 5?
I was blessed to meet a friend of Dinah her name was Bertha Henson from Annapolis Md.she traveled with her on the road Ms Bertha I called her told me fascinating stories I missed both of them or should I said Dinah music
+J Simmons lol Ive heard funny stories too.I knew one of her dressmakers I bought a rare book about her cost me a pretty penny. This Nadin Cohaer ripped off the oringal published way before her book.... just sayin'
What a nice surprise to see that people do want a movie on Dinah. You can help by showing Hollywood there is a fan base for her still. Please follow any of her social media profiles. Instagram: @thedinahwashington, Facebook: Dinah Washington Project and Twitter: @dinahwasbiopic. The producers and Dinah's family thank you!
Dinah's vibrance fooled everybody somehow and they couldn't see her deteriorating right before their eyes. The last year of her life she looked like she was completely drained. That pill combo did the same thing to her that it did to Judy Garland. It aged her way too fast. She looked drained in the 60s
Was her death an accidental drug overdose? What a terrible tragedy........Seems like we haven't learned much with Amy, Whitney, and so many others still leaving us too soon.
she had dex for weight and downers for sleep and apparently took the wrong pills in the wrong sequence, she was originally a "healthy" sisterly woman and in the 50s decided she had to be slender and got on pills, she was I think 35 or 37 in there when she passed,
Dear precious friends, for those whom believe, we are to Father God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved (2 Corinthians 2 : 15). The apostle Paul describes people who follow God as having the “pleasing aroma of Christ.” When Paul says that God leads His people in Christ’s “triumphal procession” spreading the fragrance of His truth, he’s referring to a practice in the ancient world. Victorious armies would burn incense as they marched through the streets. For their supporters, the smell brought joy. In the same way, Paul says the people of God carry a pleasing fragrance to those who believe. It isn’t something we create on our own but something God gives as He leads us in spreading the knowledge of Him. Would you like to smell like the pure, loving righteousness of Jesus Christ? Well first acknowledge that you are a sinner in need of our Savior. Welcome Abba YHWH (Father God) through Yeshua (Jesus the Christ) into your life. Receive grace by believing in Jesus Christ and what He did on the cross, His death, burial and resurrection. You will then be justified in salvation and forever blessed with His abundant love by the Holy Spirit! Let us pray!.......Dear Heavenly Father, thank You so much for leading Your people in triumph and spreading the fragrance of Your truth through us. May we admit a beautiful fragrance of love in the lives of everyone we come in contact with, in Your Holy name, Amen! May God bless you in the Glorious name of Jesus Christ our Lord and our Savior.❤️❤️❤️
Although a vile heretic and libertine, Dinah Washington provided for more good of the world though her music, than the possible spiritual death of others and herself in this bitter earth that she may have caused.
No disrespect, but from my roots and knowledge of Dinah Washington, Amy Winehouse's contribution to this production is so out of place. Dinah Washington was deceased for twenty years at the time of Amy Winehouse's birth, while I watched this entire production and no mention of the contributions Quincy Jones made to Dinah Washington's greatness.
I do not agree with this lady in the interview. Dinah IS the biggest female singing star of the 50's. Period. Listening to others? Who cares. Sinatra was in a slump( if not for the movies) , Ray was still climbing and etc etc. Dinah was doing it!
murphyc Amy discovered Dinah when she was in her early teens she has been a fan of hers for a while it was good to use Amy because it showed even modern singers have been inspired by Dinah
Why can't people treat Amy how she deserves to be treated. She was an INCREDIBLE musician and human being. She was intelligent, kind, loving, and out of this world talented. Amy was greatly influenced by Dinah from a young age, and being one of the last true jazz singers, her input in this documentary was invaluable.
