The Crip King, the King of the Crips and the Crip Godfather are just a few of the names that have been used to describe Stanley Tookie Williams, the man who called himself the co-founder of the Crip gangs in Los Angeles, California. Tookie's story has been told hundreds of times. The infamous Crip leader convicted of violent crimes and sentenced to death by execution. But what many of the stories are missing is what happened before Tookie became a Crip, why he became a Crip and the reason he later apologized for his part in creating the Crips.

That's ridiculous. He was at that time, locked up and in a controlled environment. Don't be fooled by his prison demeanor. He was a murderer and thug who got what he deserved. Fear and respect are not the same thing. People feared him on the streets, that is not respect. Maybe, they also feared him behind bars since he was the gang leader. Look beyond the exterior.

The Crips were started as an anti-gang group, and now have become one of the most prevalent and violent gangs in America today. The founders of both the Bloods and the Crips were originally members of the Black Panthers group, who started their own groups to help Black communities to defend themselves, but their groups became gangs and mortal enemies that now prey on the very communities they were created to protect.

@Cripout247 ... Interestingly enough, I grew up in South L.A. (1970-2003) surrounded by Bloods, Crips, F13 and Firestone Sheriffs... Fortunately for me, at a young age I had the wherewithal to notice that all the morons who were joining gangs, were _only_ joining gangs out of peer pressure, or there was no one at home who made them feel wanted - which is exactly what these cliques provided. As a youngster, I hung out with gang bangers - these were people I went to school with who decided to join a gang - although I was always cordial with them on the streets, I disassociated myself with them on principle. Influence is something *we* get to chose - whether that influence comes to us in the form of literature or a Wet Daddy... it’s ultimately our choice - our path.

nobody knows what goes on in the mind of a man. different people see and react to the world differently. i grew up in compton around the time when tookie was in his prime. there were thousands of teenage boys all across the city. some were afraid of bullies and gang members. others were like "hell no, you not taking my money" and would fight back. I remember once incident during lunch period, there were a couple of older dudes who didn't go to our school came on campus messing with people. most people broke out and left but i remember this one dude, i won't say his name, said f-that and went toe-to-toe with these dudes. keep in mind back then nobody had guns yet. toughness, bravery, fear..... these are individual traits. each man either has it or he doesn't.

Read that book right around the time he was set to be executed. Shit was super super sad. Never had u seen so many people outside a prison begging them to spare another man's life. When he came around and started writing children books and educating whomever he could... I believe that is the point u convert his death penalty to life without! No he was no saint but who is? There are far worse death row inmates that involve crimes on children deliberately! Rapists, and plenty others who could have been given there date instead of Took and in thw meantime he could have still spread his message and warnings!

The ppl above you don't stop, its no mercy, to keep calling on you over and over and you gotta put yourself on the line every..............single...........time. If you don't.............POP! Well, I always told my son “there’s a better way other than fighting”. I supported That belief all thru his life. We talked a lot and eventually he grew up never having been in a fight. He’s successful with a clean record today. I raised him as a single mom, I did it All by myself because that’s what’s expected from responsible people… and I left the men alone, didn’t date… at all. It’s Always been just him and i. I’m proud of the decisions I’ve made in my life and can’t imagine not having a close relationship with him and his wife as I do. I’m 69 yrs old and expecting my FIRST grandchild (a boy) early June and couldn’t be happier.

I learned about Tookie when I was in high school. I remember thinking to myself that he could’ve done more good if he was alive. He rehabilitated himself, Tookie really tried to make real change in the gang community. For the record... I don’t think he actually killed those people he was convicted in. HOWEVER, he did create a gang that would go on to destroy lives and communities. He shouldn’t have been killed in my opinion.

As an African I am fascinated by stories of our kind all across the world and this was well presented. Thank you for this documentary. I believe that when we are going too fast and being blinded by our wrong ways something above a higher power, God, helps us slow down and realise our actions are not right and that spilt moment to think out lives through is when we get a choice to change. I believe had he not gone to prison he would either be dead or the crips would have been a extreme real threat. The crips rise was to show him and the world that actions have consequences and sometimes no matter what we do to change our present, the flames of the past will still burn us one way or another. Change is achieved but that doesn't exempt us from consequences. We pay our dues accordingly but still see redemption. R.I.P Tookie. Your efforts to make a change weren't in vain. Someone somewhere out there listened and made amends. In the end he did save some lives. Edits: spelling
