Nothing like owning a Ford. That reminded me of the 2004 Exploder that I did the timing chain/guides replacement on. Oh! What a joy!

I wish starters were still as easy to get to and change out as "60s American cars and trucks.

Great vid! Spread the knowledge! Just pulled off a starter change on my '05 f150. What a job... Top bolt is by feel. No gloves. You feel the top bolt w finger. you know it's there! Once you have your extension length dialed in you feel and guide the socket onto the bolt headw that finger. Body position is key. As the bolt comes and gets loose out use that finger to maintain tension so the ratchet clicks On reinstall i put in both bottom bolts finger tight. Then w a piece of beer box cardboard to hold the bolthead into the socket to guide into the hole (or whatever hack you use) I started the top bolt...here I learned there is a body position where you can access the top bolt w your right hand enough to turn it in or out...feet pointed out the front you go in w the right. I discovered this position after I got the bolt started so it may be possible to start the bolt by finger this way. Good luck. This job is a mother!

I find that green oxidation cleans off easy with baking soda and water. Either mix some up in a cup and soak the terminals in it ( just takes a few minutes...), or brush it on. The wire brush method usually just gets the surface stuff and makes it shiny but there's stuff hiding underneath that comes back soon.... and like you, I coat it all in dielectric grease, and still spray some anti-corrosion spray on everything.... Great video man !

About to do the same job in Brown County Ohio. Only difference its the 3v 5.4 on a friend's truck. I replaced mine on my 1999 4.6 5spd in 5° weather in the middle of the night a few winters ago. I ended up using a 3ft extension and swivel for the top bolt i think. That was a rough night

That top bolt is the same for the 4.6l and the 5.4l from what I have noticed but the top bolt is a pain in the butt just to get out I am about to put it back together today

Great vid. Quick question been hearing a lot about the fire wall mounted starter solenoid when I jump it out by placing a screwdriver across both post I get the same “click” just like when I turn the switch. Does this tell me the issue is that solenoid or the starter. All the videos I’ve watch shows jumping it out but cranking the vehicle when you do it so I am confused if it is this solenoid or the starter

Here is what I had to do and it took me 6 hours. 4 of which trying to get the socket on the top bolt. I only have 1/2 inch clearance between the exhaust flange and the starter. I have long skinny fingers and could not even touch the top bolt with the tip of my finger. I stabbed for hours trying to get the socket on the bolt, finding out that I never came close nor even touched it. This was my fix: Take the 2 easy ones out, pry the damn thing off, breaking the ear on the starter. remove the last bolt and remaining piece, tape a small socket & 6 inch extension to the top of the new starter with the bolt partly in the hole, set the new starter up and attach ratchet to extension and run it in. That was my plan and should work for 99% of you. for me I was vindicated when the starter wouldn't slide into place because the extension was hitting the bolt that held the motor mount. There was NO way you can remove my starter without removing the motor mount!!! I only have 2 bolts in place, if that doesn't work out then I will have to buy a new starter, lift the motor then remove the motor mounts. maybe the mount is worn out... but is measures the same as the other side. Fk Ford!

So how long did it take you? I'm about to tackle the starter on my 2008 f150.

yours is a lot easier then mine. i have two broken bolts that is bear to get out.

ford f150 owner here i had a 2002 that truck turned over still a little 200,000 miles but sold it to take over payments on my dads 05 f150 146,000 miles nd stopped turning over nd doing the same thing. but my has the max payload package nd if i add the towing airbags to it, it will tow as much as the newer ford tht tow 12,000 lbs.

Dont even bother changing the spark plugs on the Triton. Pay someone to do them lol. They break off in 2 pieces when you try to take them out.

As an aircraft mechanic, I certainly believe they should. You think that starter was difficult....I have an 04. Yes it was a pain in the ass, but nothing compared to an aircraft. OH, I've worked on Chevy, Dodges, Nissan's, Toyota's, etc...they all are pain in the ass. Funny, cool vid man....but stick to photography.

Are you showing yourself but you’re not showing us with the tools in the picture of you actually removing the starter and how hard it is to remove really these videos and try to find a better way
