Thanks for the very helpful video. Some other observations I made during my 6 hours swear fest were- 1. 2 3" extensions rather than 1 6" worked better for me on the top bolt. The 2 3" extensions are about 1/2" shorter and let me back out the bolt almost all the way out of the hole before pinching the ratchet on the frame. 2. when working on the top bolt I found it easiest to have my body 90 degrees to the truck with my feet at the drivers side door. That allowed my hands to follow the curve of the starter easier to located the top bolt. 3. a 12 point socket is a lot easier to got on the top bolt to remove it. 4. If you are having a problem getting on the bolt, check for debris on top of the starter that might interfere with the socket. 5. Give each bolt hole a couple of short blasts of brake cleaner to help to remove any grit from the holes. 6. Make sure the neighborhood kids aren't around while you are replacing the starter. Good luck to all why try this.

I'm on day2 trying to change this starter on my buddy's f150, gots the 4.6 2v and the top bolts being a bitch to get at. And all the 3bolts are different on the starter 13mm the bottom, middle bolts gots a half inch and the top is a 10mm with no room to get a ratchet on even with 2 3"" extensions so idk what too do now ,, plus the exhaust manifolds on the way to go by the side
@jgk10000
@jgk10000 Год назад
The single 6” extension worked for me. But idk how this feller had both hands up in the main area. I peeled my fender liner back until I could fold it behind the tire (didn’t try to do it gently, 17 yo truck who cares) then I snaked my left hand up there and over the frame palm up to guide socket to that top bolt. It seems impossible until all of the sudden you get it seated and then the bolt is out after 10 minutes of 5° turns. Now you think the worst is behind you until you’re holding the new starter trying to get the bolts threaded wtf

Very helpful video, watched it 2 years ago and it helped me yesterday when it died at my local post office. 2 hours to remove the starter, walked it 1/4 mile down the road to a local rebuilder, he rebuilt it in 30 minutes, then I reinstalled it in less than 30 minutes. Thanks for all the great tips!

This was my first time watching one of your videos. I would say great job on providing incite and details regarding the tools, sizes and lengths that you recommend. Just an fyi for those here, my truck is a 2007 f150 5.4 motor. The little braided ground wire from the solenoid to the starter was rusted in half. Truck had turned over more slowly then normal several times over the summer but I didn't look into it at the time:(( Today it was 6 degrees outside and today is when the starter failed completely. No heated shop, no lift and no power tools. So not to bore anyone here is the best information that I have to share and it worked FANTASTIC. I ended up using a much smaller ratchet than anyone noted on this thread that I have seen. I will try to include a pic but here is the long and short of it... pun intended... is the ratchet I used is five inches long overall with a swivel head. To that I connected a 2 7/8" 3/8" drive extension, a 3/8" to 1/2" adapter and a deep well 1/2 drive 12 point socket. Overall dimensions were 6 3/4" for the ratchet, extension, adapter and socket. Oh and the top bolt took me less than five minuets to remove. The short ratchet allowed me to get one half of a revolution on each motion. It was the first time I danced under my truck after I got the top bolt out. Thanks again for the video, you got me on the right track. PS I tried to attach a pic without success. Sorry

trick that I did, when replacing my starter, (I placed a piece of electricity tape over the hole on the top hole on the new starter, stick the bolt through it, which holds the bolt in place put the starter in place, this really make reinstall the top bolt easy to install). it is a pain but be patient, also check the starter cable wire harness. I live in Canada my wire harness was very corroded. Great video really help me to tackle this job.

Thanks much for your video. As with all your videos, well presented and right on the money. On my 2006 Ford LTD 5.4L, there was no way to get my hand up and over the starter motor for the top bolt. To solve the problem of access, I took off the wheel well shield and went in under the exhaust manifold from the top. I used a 9" extension on a 3/8ths inch with a swivel head connector. Just enough friction to break torque and just enough visibility to see the bolt . Cheers and Thanks Much.

Makuloco to the rescue again! Thanks so much man, you really saved me some time. It still took me a couple of hours mainly because of having to take fatigue breaks. My starter failure on my 2012 Raptor was very unique. One of the solder points on the S terminal on the solonoid had broken loose you could move the terminal plate around and the starter would connect, even saw small arcing. Great video, second time I've used one of your walk through's. Leadframe the other! Really helpful channel

Did mine yesterday. I took off the passenger side wheel like others have done. I have big hands and have a real hard time getting them into that tight gap around the starter. Also if you position a light right you'll be able to see the bolt which helps a lot. It is a little extra work to take off the wheel and the plastic well sheild, but if you've never removed one before it might be worth it. You can get the bolt with a 6 inch extension and a wobbler or a similar arrangement depending on what you have for tools. I electrical tape the wobbler flex joint to stiffen it up so you can easily position it onto the bolt without it flopping around and you can actually see what you're doing. Once you get that one off it's easy if you have a decent selection of wrenches. Definetly wire brush your bolts well and use antiseize as well as recommended and you will find the reassembly will go much better. I put a generous amount of antiseize onto the bolt and turn them into the holes before reinstalling the starter to reduce the chance of misthreading the soft aluminum. I use nickel based antiseize which works really well on aluminum castings. If you think this project is really hard replace your exhaust manifolds first and it will seem much easier.
@rototiller78

Yeah, when you replace the passenger side exhaust manifold and gasket you have to remove the starter to get the room needed to do the exhaust manifold job

I also used a short flexhead ratchet fine tooth. Good luck

Thanks for putting up the video. Yours is one of the most well lit and clearest I could find. You made removing that 3rd bolt look easy. I had a helluva time trying to get my socket on it because I couldn't get two hands up there. My front steering linkage and trans cooling lines were in the way. I finally pulled out my digital inspection endoscope and that saved me.

I have this exact same problem. I had a steel plate that I also had to remove to get more access. I was finally able to snap a pic of the third bolt with my phone but need to find a combination of extensions that will allow me to get to that bolt. They definitely make it easy on the 5.4L engines!

Spot on! Spot on! Save me arse! I don't have flex-head ratchets & it made the project lengthy & difficult. I did take off the RF tire to give me some more room. Top bolt was a beyotch but coming in from the passenger side helped a ton. My truck is an '07, so the cross-member on the frame made accessibility even tougher. But, thanks. There are several "F150 starter" videos on RU-vid, but yours helped the most by far! Again, thanks!

The video was very helpful. I almost took the truck to a shop to let them install a starter I purchased. 97 Expedition, 4x4 with a 4.6. The truck has oversized tires so I was able to crawl under it easily. As soon as I broke the battery cable lug to the solenoid, I was committed! ;) Probably the last warm day in Michigan until next April. It took some effort but I got the two bolts loose. I couldn't find the top bolt. After using a mirror to see up there, I noticed the bolt was missing. I will probably pick one up the next time I am at a parts yard.

Your video was a REAL HELP! Difficult job but your tip on using 6" extension was great! I ended up using a couple of shorter extensions together with a 13mm deep socket for the top bolt...it gave me about a 1/4" extra on what the 6" extension with a standard 13mm socket had... gave me a little better clearance past the end of the starter. Thankfully the hidden bolts spun off easily once they were loose. Really helpful video - THANKS!!!

@@jeorginadaniels9259 just feel around for the bolt and then put a small wrench in there and go super slow if it's too tight get extensions and get a swivel in between the extension once you feel around for the boat it's pretty easy to get out there's just not a lot of room to turn the wrench till you just have to be patient and just turn only two clicks at a time with your wrench

followed to a tee. worked out well. thank you. i got a little lucky, previous owner must have changed starters before, because the 3rd bolt was not there. they may have had a hard time getting it out and decided not to replace it but i will be throwing it in asap.... maybe :)

I feel your pain. I had to change the starter on my 02 Explorer a couple of years ago. I had it parked on an uneven section of grass when mine went out. So I had to first level my truck before I could jack it up to get to the starter. And because it was sitting on the grass, I didn't feel comfortable getting underneath it. So I had to take the front left wheel off as well as well as the splash guard. Even then I was only able to reach one arm in to work on it. Also a good tip is not to over tighten the bolts on the terminals. I torqued down too much and ended up breaking the posts on the solenoid.

+Joshua Luther Good Tip! Yes that is why I use a 1/4" ratchet to avoid breaking those terminals off.

Video still helping people in 2022. Someone else helped me by not installing the 3rd bolt... Never would have found out where to feel and find out l was even missing a bolt.

Thanks for video. I found that a craftsman stubby flex 3/8" driver mated to the extensions was invaluable for top and side bolt. I was able to get decent rotation with little room. I still used a harbor freight flex full size driver to break bolts loose and set final torque. Finally some wire wheel the bolts and antisieze be for installing again.

Just wondering why they don’t use a stud with a nut and lock washer for the top seems it would line up hold it in place while you start the other two bolts and I’m thinking that it would be easier to start a nut than trying to find a hole you can’t see

Just did this on my 2016 f150, awesome video, way easier on a 2016, the starter fell right out once I had all 3 bolts out, that top bolt did take me 30 minutes tho ...

It is a great video, and I don't know why it's got thumbs down but whatever. Only thing that is kinda wrong depending.. using the factory nuts. If the new solenoid terminal post happens to be Zinc and you put a copper nut on it or vice versa, Now you have electrolysis occuring and it will be green and crusty in no time. At the shop we see remans come with copper/brass posts with zinc nuts all the time. Haha I think they want them to fail.

So what's your suggestion to this? Don't use the factory nuts? Or use the factory nuts on the new starter with the brass/copper posts? Wasn't sure what you were trying to clarify

I have a 96 Ford F-150 with a 5.0v8, I replaced the factory starter with a rebuilt duralast starter. The truck starts ok, but sounds a little rough, the original starter was not shimed. Also the battery light is on, but it shows the right charging voltage when the truck is running. Any ideas of what might be the problem? Any feedback would be great.

Are there shims. Had a starter put in 2months ago. I went to start this morn. 3x it wanted to turn over. 4th time heavy grind noise. Way more than before. Would this be a bad starter or flywheel? (96 f150 auto) any thoughts before I hear from garage, as I'm wigged by what they may tell me, and the $$$ Thanks

Just did mine on my '14. What a pain in the you know what. I said words I haven't said in years. I only bled once, but got quite a few scratches. I think I'll write a letter to Ford this week and let them know what I think of this design. Thanks for the video though.

Took me 2.5 hrs to get starter out on 2013 f150 5.0L. Still not sure how I ever loosened that top bolt. Tried every combination of extensions available. Nothing wanted to work. No room up there. Almost gave up. Ground down a small socket to make it 1/8-1/4" shorter with a 6"-3/8 extension and that seemed to do the trick to loosen the bolt. Then took it out with 6'' 1/4 drive. Install was a little over and hour. When installing put a piece of tape over top hole, drill a hole in it and insert bolt. This will hold in place till you tighten it. Good luck to all that try this. On the hardness level I would rate this a 8 or 9, but still saved me around $350+ doing it myself.
