The life of a tower guard

On the job less than a year with minimal training, 26-year-old correctional officer Calvin May was taken hostage during a riot in July 1980 at the Idaho State Penitentiary south of Boise. Today, the 61-year-old May keeps tabs on more than 1,500 inmates from his perch in Tower 2, above, at the same prison, now called the Idaho State Correctional Institution. One of Idaho’s longest-serving correctional officers ever, he credits his career in part to the insight he gained from his ordeal - and to the Bible he carried then and now.

I did almost 4 months in a tower, but in Nebraska we rotate every 4 months, so I've done a bit of everything. If I could get a permanent tower job, I'd probably never do anything else lol.

thats too bad they rotate the job. I use to work in the Lincoln area many years ago. Quite something to find someone randomly on the internet from the Lincoln area. I kinda always wondered what it would be like to work in those towers. I'd drive past for food on break and then high-tail it back through to the area. Only if Culvers was full. lol. Hwy 2 was a PAIN to deal with. An hour break wasn't much for Lincoln LOL!!

@@donotcare330TY to you guards. You do a great thing. We need more folks in jail not less as this society is nuts. We need 5x the prisons tbh. Anamosa isn't all that far from me and have family in LE. I love Culver's too. Butter burgers, rootbeer floats, Walleye or Cod dinners, crispy chicken sandwich, onion rings, soft serve, we have a lot of em here in Iowa too. You guys in NE aren't that far. I think you have more and better jails. TBH ours are sure aging here. I'd love a tower job. I'd hate being up close to some of those inmates. We get a lot of spill over here from Chicago and Louis and T.C. Hate the crime spreading. T.G. for ccw. Almost had to use it three times in last 15 years. So much evil in this world. Bet you guys have seen it all. Then you have to take crud from nit wits that hate leo's because they were on phone going 20 over and were late to a job they hate anyway. What a world! 😂 Stay safe guys! (salute)

Picket tower boss is probably the best job at TDCJ but you will probably have to wait 20yrs for that detail.

Do you have to do anything else?I guess a position like this is high up on the seniority list because it's probably the best one in the institution.

In some states when a guard retires or moves to another position in the prison, the job is posted and officers bid on the job by seniority. Federal prisons(don't know if they still use do) would rotate assignments every 30 days and make you rotate shifts. Worse jobs are in the housing units you have to keep track of inmates and have to have the inmate janitors have the unit clean in case you have the big bosses stop by. Tower guards are very much desired as some correction officers want to get assignments that limit their contact with inmates. Unfortunately, newbie officers are usually assigned the housing units, might be in charge of quite a few inmates.

I can't speak for all federal institutions but it's purely seniority based where I work. Some tower officers take those posts until they retire.

Depends on the institution, most bid by seniority ( in California). Some places they move every year or six months. In California, they bid 2-3 years depending on their institution.

@Christian Constitutionalist I mean it also looks like a shitty job. I used to work as a security guard in general. And let me tell you, it's not a good job. Temporarily, maybe. But after like 1 to 5 years, the person is basically stuck as a security guard for life.
@AldoSchmedack

@@professional.commentatorWhy would you care what people think? Bunch of nitwits that hate leo's because they were doing 20 over and on phone late for a job they hate anyway so now they got a beef. And you care what they think? We frankly don't have enough jails. These guys are heroes for keeping people safe, not evil villans. The nuts who commit crimes are the ones responsible. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time or pay the fine. Society sucks because of dumb people. Wasn't always this way. In old days people respected laws and cops and we were better for it. It's people who are dumb. I care nothing about what such people think.

And 40x zoom right? No, not really. Marines teach 500 yds with open sights and people get Expert Marksman often (36/40). You are shooting to stop not taking shots on dimes and nickels. Easily doable at 200 yd max distance. If you can't make that shot you shouldn't be behind a gun. Especjally as an officer, especially a tower guard. Especially with an M4 with 3000 fps ammo.

They only give him Lethal rounds for the shotgun? It seems this tower isn't close to the inmate area but why wouldn't they give him some beanbag rounds in case a fight breaks out? Or just another option between yelling and a rifle.
