One of my favorite things to do with a new hire, is to do fire/security cell checks. As we go through the cells, I will ask them, "What is this?" "What is it used for?" They have probably never seen a "stinger", or a hollowed out, bent pen used for filling wash tubs. A saltine box for catching soot to make tattoo ink. Why do they keep used chip bags. Why do I shake their baby powder containers. Why do I look at the blades on every razor. What is real contraband, and what is nuisance contraband. What stays and what goes. What deserves a write up, and what just gets removed from their cell. True training experience.

I just started two weeks ago. next week first week of academy starts next week. I was a route delivery driver and I'm 56 years old. a few of the women are my age of the co 1 ,s that are in my class but im far by oldest of the males. two males and a female are rehires. my question is when will I know if it's for me or not? I figured I should go through the academy and on the job training first and maybe I would have a idea after that.

I use small privileges to gain rapport with the offender population, like i do take time to get them the small stuff they need, like blankets, toilet tissue, hygiene products, towels, blankets and one of the biggest is checking the tablets to make sure they charge, getting them up for breakfast, out for church, getting them to med call or calling the nurse if they miss it, sorting and distributing mail in a timely manner, privileges mean a lot to those guys and when they give me something i give back, but i can easily stop doing these little extra tasks that they value so much and they know Because they generally do what i expect of them without asking after they know how i am as a CO "Generosity is its own form of power"

I love this video. Within the first minute of the video I can relate. We had a rookie in a situation who couldn’t handle an inmate getting sprayed. He ran away not able to breathe. It made me mad. I am a year late to this. But that incident sits with me. Spray is part of our job. Handle it and do your job.

When ever I work with a new officer I always stress that they should never be afraid of asking a stupid question. Corrections is a whole different world. When a civilian sees a toothbrush, they visualize someone brushing their teeth. When a CO sees a toothbrush, they visualize a stabbing weapon sticking out of somebody's neck. The only stupid question is the question you don't ask. The thing of it is, when a new CO thinks they have a stupid question, it actually turns out to be a very good question. But that's what corrections is about.

Hey Anthony, thanks for the content and the effort. Had my first ever oral board last week and my nerves got the best of me when that first question came my way. Looking forward to applying again in 6 months, with an idea of what the oral board is like, and more prepared to nail it. Stay safe. ✊🏼

So I just started Monday and Tuesday. I’m very shy but always wanted to be in law enforcement and I can tell you right now. Confidence is key. I have night shift and most of the time everyone is doing what they’re supposed to do. Don’t get comfortable tho because it isn’t your house. You’re there to observe, document, and provide services to the inmates and job. Of course I’m in a jail so I’m not sure if these apply to prison?🤔

But there's a lot of times and I am pushed and forced to go outside of that. Im 36Yo and i have a lot of work Experience and I understand that policy and procedure are put in place for the employees safety and other. But some to think if you go by the book your scared or dont want to do your job, please help me understand because im haveing a hard time with this.

Hello I have another question one particular day I volunteer to stay over to work another 4 hours. Is sergeant came into My dorm cursing calling inmates m************ and I looked at him and asked him was he the sergeant in the dorm today he said to me I'm here. I then asked him are you my relief or are you my sergeant because I volunteered he then responded back yes get out of here go home and enjoy your 2 days off. So I exit the dorm clocked out and went home I then received a phone call that said I had to put in a incident report for abandoning my post. What is going on?

Speaking with Inmate's you must learn Verbal Judo. It's not about your strength it's learning how to speak. If you can take a College course on Child development it gives you alot of insight to behavior.
@TierTalk
@TierTalk 4 года назад
Shannon Tolson I agree. You also have to have control of where the conversation is going
@toddcercone6715
@toddcercone6715 4 года назад
That is touchy. I agree that IPC is one of your strongest tools that you can develop. To me, the biggest thing is knowing when to explain, the why, to an inmate, and when to just tell them to "Just do it." Everyone reacts differently to different approaches. Some need a direct order to be given, and some need "pulled aside", and spoken to. Some inmates use this as a manipulation technique. You must know the difference.
