I live outside of San Francisco. We have the best markets, shopping malls, and hospitals (Stanford, UCSF), 4 public libraries within 3 miles. And yet, I would never ever walk outside when it gets dark. That’s our reality. If Singapore let us retire and spend our money there I’ll be the first to sign up. A walk to a hawker place, with the evening cooling breeze…just like in my country 60 years ago. For now my cravings are personal safety, civil courtesy, and responsible government.

Another great video. Thanks. Because of the profile of your guests, the views and recollections naturally represent their narrow experiences. Singapore is small, yet quite diverse and segmented. So the lived experience can be very different even for people who have lived here for decades, especially for those who live in their own bubbles. For example - the notion in this video that there were no restaurants outside of 5* hotels in Singapore up till the early 80s and that there was little nightlife should be clarified.... Yes, there were few European restaurants, and certainly the concept of western fine dining was a rarity. Yet Singapore had restaurants serving western food like Skillet/Silver Spoon, Jack's Place, Troika/Shashlik. Many were operated by Hainanese who learned their trade serving British military households up till the moment British military forces withdrew in the early 70s. Plenty of Chinese restaurants around too.... some are even in buisness today like Dragon Phoenix, Red Star, Spring Court in the Chinatown area. Then, as now, they were choice venues for Chinese wedding dinners, often with a resident band and singers. There were also beachfront seafood restaurants in Upper East Coast Road and Punggol Point like Kheng Luck, Palm Beach, Hua Yu Wee, Little Red House, etc. For night entertainment, a visit to the "Shaw Worlds" - Great World, Beauty World, Gay World, New World - the amusement parks of early Singapore was a treat we looked forward to. And of course, Geylang and the original Bugis Street had after dark action that would make a seasoned sailor blush. ;-)

I reckon perhaps, back then and even now, some folks equate "restaurants/fine dining" with michelin-starred sort of establishments. And everything else, would (ostensibly) be regarded as "kopitiam" lol =)

First time I visited Singapore, the river was filled with black canvas covered “bumboats” plying back and forth between the ships offshore and the many godowns along the quay. There were no fancy restaurants and clubs along the quay in those days. I remember those days clearly. There were restaurants outside the hotels. I remember having steamboat for the first time at a restaurant atop Lucky Plaza. There were seafood restaurants along East Coast Parkway. Several restaurants inside shopping malls. Bugis Street was still a colorful place to have a cold beer and people watch at night. And there was the Tropicana on Scotts Road. 😂

I really enjoy your channel and your interviews Just a small production tip: there is a super easy, super cheap and easier than the clip on mic you are using now There is a magnet that rode sells - it goes on the outside of the shirt and then the audio tx can go inside. Its $20 and makes the mic ing look much more pleasing compared to a giant fluffy box under the chin. All you see is a small black rectangle. If you want to go next level - check out the rode pin mic!

To add on to the comment I made yesterday, if I recall correctly, back in the 80s and early 90s, the expat community mostly don't move in the same neighbourhood as the locals, unlike today when it's considered hip to go to a hawker centre. Hence, maybe that's why he didn't see the restaurants that the locals patronized. Also very telling (maybe) is that this interviewee had meant to say "there was no Western restaurants" when he said "there was no restaurants" - again (maybe) a sign of the community that he used to move around. Max only came to SG in the last ten years or so (not sure for his team) and was probably not aware of what the expat community used to be like in the 80s.

At time 0:41, the guy said that there were no restaurants outside of hotels in the 80s. I'm pretty sure that that is NOT correct. I was already 7 yo in 1980 and I remembered going out to Chinese restaurants with my parents. Maybe there were no restaurants serving Western food at that time. But there were certainly Chinese restaurants. Is this another expat who only moved around in the expat community??
