Dream rifle. Pumped you released this video. Beautiful rifle that is worth the money if you ask me. I think the aesthetic is important to point out, but I would also say it’s hard to find reliability sometimes. This is one of those rifles that you’ll never have to doubt the performance of. Congrats. I just finished up my budget build, Begara b14 ridge in 30-06 with razor lht and a sthealthy hunter optic/barrel cover. Now I’m working to save up for a nice rifle build like this later in life.
I shoot the proof MTR in 7mm rem mag and it’s hands down one of my favorite rifles to shoot. I’ve shot lots of hornady factory loads and load a 162eldx and 168 Berger VLD and all of them have grouped well under 3/4moa with the hand loads going 1/2moa and under!
Curious on your take on scopes. See you run a lot of mark 5’s and now the nx8? Why the switch? Which do you like better? I run all nx8 and thinking about a mark 5 for my next but not sure if I want to experiment when I know the nx8 works. Thanks for your take and time.
The question I have, is it worth the coin.? When I can source an action, stock and barrel and have a gunsmith assemble the pieces. This is Serious question I priced out a rifle, With a proof barrel, a defiance action and AG stock and it was $3700 roughly. I believe the performance would be around the same caliber. I guess it’s a matter of weight and wages. Erik do your custom builds shoot just as good as the proof rifle ?
$3700 seems a little on the cheap side for those components TBH, but I guess it depends on what gun smith is putting it together for you! Your not wrong when you say "weights" and "wages". You'll notice in the video where I say when you have something lightweight your trading "backpackability" for some "shootability", but I will say for how lightweight this rifle is it shoots lights out, but comparing my custom builds to this ultralight custom rifle is different because those guns are 3-4 pounds heavier than this rifle. Do they shoot excellent? Yes! Does this shoot excellent? Yes! Which one would I rather pack on a sheep hunt? Def this one!
My only question is. Would you pick this over a TS custom? I literally just got my order together for TS on the fact that you guys speak so highly of them!
What I found with my ultralight, to get real tight groups, is to put a little natural down pressure on some forward part of the scope.. Just preloading the pod isn't enough.. I use a good break but, by putting my non-trigger finger hand on top of scope or out in front on the stock helps tighten the groups.. I do so with the intention to have a consistent pressure and tension.. 1000 ways to skin the cat...THe lightweight ones a a bit more jumpy though and muzzle flip control/consistency can be a high yield area to focus.. Nice riffle, brother!
It’s funny that you mention this because I actually thought about doing this with it my next time out at the range! I don’t have a brake for it yet, but I plan on getting on very 🔜 not sure if you’re new to the channel or not, but you’re very welcome here! Thanks for weighing in! 💪🆒
This is an dream rifle but would put me in the poor house man 😂😂😂 I’m just gonna get a Savage Ultralight and convince myself that it’s a proof rifle 😭😭
Man that’s bout perfect in my eyes…I got the waypoint prc and 4x32nx8 one I’ve looked hard at but been leanin towards the 22x lht to keep with the LW theme…mines the 24” carbon bsf barrel and I’ve handloaded for a yr with awsome results usin my old simmons 14x me and mom run down in wee hrs before opening day around 99…couldn’t find long tube fit my 700 7mag dad got me as his present till that 1 display model and itll hold zero long as you don’t bump it…lol..shit some unbelievable groups with $100 scope and bust 20oz at 250yrds shootin 95gr v max@3666fps…💥
It’s a nice rifle. But it’s way over priced. Almost $8k without optic is insane for that, funny how they can’t even put a triggertech diamond in it for that much.
When have you ever said that beautiful hand carved, hand painted, hand crafted piece of furniture that looks way amazing and performs way amazing is overpriced? I realize furniture doesn't perform, but you get the drift.
@@MuleyFreak that’s not the point. The point is that the proof name isn’t worth it either. Some of the best gunsmiths in the country don’t charge that much for a rifle. These rifles are still mass produced, they are not a real custom rifle
And my point is this...custom rifle builders push whatever barrels they can get quicker than a PROOF barrel so they can hurry and get the gun built and turn cash. Other barrels shoot good enough that they'll put their names behind them. Additionally, some custom rifle builders threw adults sized tantrums about PROOF's prefits and also decided to go a different direction as a result. You know as well as I do that the internet is 100% transparent and there will also be haters.
@@MuleyFreak proof barrels are not the best on the market. If we are being honest here you didn’t pay for that rifle and proof sent it to you to do a review. If they let you keep it then that’s fine, but proof rifles are still mass produced and not custom. I’ll take a rifle where I can sit down with the gunsmith and have it built to my specs. That’s a custom rifle, not buying it off their website.
I've been shooting PROOF barrels/rifles for the better part of 10+ years just an FYI. Other manufactures don't even come close to their production and thorough testing processes. Additionally, there's been plenty of other barrels companies approach us that would throw arguably more money at us to shoot their stuff, but we shoot PROOF because we believe in it and we support good companies and good people. We don't chase money and we certainly don't digest hate and or jealousy.
I'm a a huge fan of installing a rail using a atlas bipod. I am currently building a lightweight rifle... will a bipod hurt the stock on that type of lightweight build. In the field should I just use my pack as a rest or install a rail. What r your thoughts
I'm a huge fan of a rail and a partial fan of the atlas. I've used it for a lot of years, but I don't like the ease of use when you're proned out like I do say the Magpul 1911. As far as the bipod hurting that pretty stock I will have to check. I can't imagine it doing so. I would say shooting off a backpack isn't as accurate but it can be faster and at short distances and where time is a factor it might be better.
Man, I love that TS for more long distance stuff, but I love this one for how lightweight it is. It would just depend on the application, really. Those two 7MMs are my favorite though.
Iv got a 6.5 prc a 300 prc and will have a 7prc real soon im just gonna build it off a tikka with a 20" barrel and launch 175-180 grain bergers. Whole rifle with scope and bipod should be like 7.7 pounds. All in
I'd say excellent choice in calibers, sir! The 6.5 PRC and 300 PRC are also some of our favorites! What is the purpose behind the rifle going to be for? Whitetail short range? Or Western big game?
Right on! I hear those MTR are solid. It’s just different. It’s lighter - for fine details, but my other rifles shoot great. I’ll do a grouping video on this rifle here soon.
No disputing that's one gorgeous rifle, but........................ I have several Tikka T3x lite and ultra lite rifles that shoot half moa or better. It seems that I just can't walk into a Gunshop and leave without another Tikka. Are they as nicely finished as a Proof? No. Can they shoot as accurately as a Proof? Yes! Thanks for another great video.
I also run Tikkas and am confounded by all these full carbon titanium rifles that cost an arm and leg. A factory superlite in 7 rem mag is 6.1 lbs, add some lightweight talley direct mount rings that saves pic rails as well. Sub MOA guaranteed for $1000 USD. Unless I’m missing something?
Haha. There’s nothing wrong with supporting our 2A rights in the form of a Tikka - especially if they shoot well for you and you like them! This rifle just has different features than a Tikka, first starters, that adjustable. (Maybe Tikka has one? iDK) lots of times these rifles are built for specific bullets and speeds too. Something you don’t necessarily do when you walk into a sporting goods store with that same intention. Thanks for the comment!! Appreciate guys like you on our channel!
No one ever said you couldn’t build a custom rifle for less, but buying a production stock and putting it together with other components isn’t necessarily the same level of custom.
Beautiful rifle, you get an A+ for a mil scope most hunters have not caught onto the advantage of it. I would still put on a Arca rail, makes it somewhat more balance to shoot off a tripod.
Erik has been shooting MIL scopes for 5-6 years and swears by it for several reasons! (Sounds like a future video). Erik mentioned at the end of the video he fully plans on installing a rail on the end to gain that cant adjustability back to his set up._
Nice Boomstick, get prone….you’ll never hunt off a bench! Also, you’re going to suppress that rifle, why not sight it in with your can? Saves time, barrel life, etc 😉
Thanks, bro! As far as your prone comment goes when lying prone I would still be hunting/shooting with this bipod. Additionally, when lying prone I would be shooting with the exact same rear bag as well. The only difference is by feet being sprawled out which doesn't always happen when hunting in the field either (positions get weird sometimes). Now if I were shooting out of a lead sled I would let you roast me in the comments lol. As far as barrel life goes, I'm not worried about the 15 rounds I shot in the video affecting my barrel life! :)
@@MuleyFreak shooting prone mitigates recoil, having all of your body weight behind the rifle while shooting any rifle…let alone an “ultra-lite” rifle increases accuracy. Notice you did not display your groupings? Proof is always in the pudding & I’m not sold on the rifle if it doesn’t hold the advertised accuracy guaranteed by the manufacturer. The sponsor most likely wants your viewers & its customers to see that their product shoots accurately like the test target shows. Didn’t want to lay in the snow, C’mon man! Lay a piece of cardboard & a shooting mat down to resolve that issue!?!?! As a backcountry hunter, shooting at game while laying in the snow is inevitable. Not trying to blow up your comment section, only trying to help you. If I offended you, that’s your problem not mine. Stay humble, none of us are perfect & or know it all. 😎🤙
Of course it does. The more meat behind the weapon the less recoil. Always appreciate folks offering constructive feedback and opinions - appreciate guys like you on the channel. Happy New Year!
Maybe some i reckon. I am not hurting by any means and can easily purchase like this. But it has to make sense. I need a performance gain from an inflated investment. Im not seeing that here. I can shoot all day next to this rifle for less than $4500 and the case. And it will be lighter than that one. I mean you still have a 9 lb rifle. Awesome equipment for sure, but you can get there for less than half the price.
@@MuleyFreak just got a fierce rival in .300 prc and wondering if I need a heavier scope to take down the snappiness.I already have the added weight of a can to help
Just bought a 7mmprc but not a fan of Hornady ammo on game animals the eldx is nothing more than a v- max plus the 7prc unless u hand load it isn't close to the 3,000 fps they list on eldx more like 2,800 in a 24 inch barrel im waiting on someone to prove me wrong but they cannot
@MuleyFreak do not care for them just a personal opinion. But also still no answers on why Hornady is claiming 3,000 fps it isn't happening 28 to 2850 is all u getting and that is with a 24 inch barrel. Sounds like false advertising to me
Saw this video and started googling where to buy and I was expecting at the least a 5k rifle but being 8k is way out my range any 2-5k will perform the same or even better. I would rather take a custom built tikka over this for that price.
@@MuleyFreak not when I run a 195gn Berger at 2912 out of the 7 mag 26” and a 175 Berger at 2975 out of a 7 mag 22”. 7 PRC was never needed. Especially with long mag fast twist factory options in 7 mag. You can even beat those speeds with a custom throat. 7 mag as a .115 freebore as its saami chamber. 7 mag was way beyond its time. It’s like they knew what the future of the long heavy bullets would become.
@@erikvanwoerkom1896 you can buy factory ammo with 195 and 180 and 175 for 7 mag. You can’t beat the 7 mag on factory offerings or ammo offerings. Or brass or materials to reload. Plus with the shorter freebore you can run more bullets than the 7 PRC. No offense but that round is a joke. Most and I mean most people shouldn’t hunt past 600 yards and 30-06, 7 mag both can smash an elk at those distances with decent loads but their full potential is much further. Not to mention way better bullets than hornady offers. A person shooting over 600 yards on an animal should not be using factory ammo to begin with. They should be reloading and getting the max accuracy and low SDs and low ES. The only thing it is going to do is force manufacturers to hurt the 7 mag sales. Which is just ridiculous for all the 7 mag users which is a lot of hunters. I personally run 2 7 mags. My buddy runs 3. Most people I know use 7 mags. The avg hunter hunts 300 yards and in. I am all for new cartridges when it’s needed. But didn’t care for the 300 PRC after I saw what a 300 win mag can do with a 245 EOL over 2800 fps with less powder than PRC. Now 6.5 PRC I like. We did not have a well established 6.5 magnum. Why haven’t they made a 25 PRC. Great caliber.
I agree and disagree with you. The round is incredible. (disagree part.) Most folks shouldn't shoot past 600 yards (Agree part). Factory ammo past 600 yards from a trained individual is completely and totally acceptable. Not everyone has the time or means to reload and thankfully so because factory options these days are incredible. That said, I love the 7MM as well. It's a great options!
@@erikvanwoerkom1896 I'm pretty sure that doesn't apply to ferraris and 8K rifles, except on the fact that if you bought this you wouldn't be able to afford ever buying again.
Lol. My .308 weighs 8.8 lbs with scope and ammo. I have less than 2 g's with everything. I can punch the center all day at 300 yards. Im.never shooting further than that, I will close the distance. Those higher velocity calibers shoot the barrel out much faster as well but not really a concern on a hunting rifle. But that build is over $10,000, unless a company is giving a person these items so they can promote it on a video or something it just doesn't make sense. Beautiful set up though i will say that.
From the sounds of it (300 yards) your rifle serves likely a much different purpose than this rifle will serve. We are comparing a Ferrari to a Mustang and their applications like your rifle and my rifle are completely different. I'm not saying you need to spend 10Gs to get a rifle that shoots either. I'm just saying they are completely different builds, tastes, and applications.
My Weatherby backcountry 2.0 carbon in 30-378 is 1.5lbs lighter and half the cost. Shoots under half inch groups in a superior cartridges with manageable recoil. Nothing shows me that rifle is worth $7,800.
We are big fans of Adam Weatherby, but not necessarily the free bore of those high velocity calibers, unfortunately! The ergonomics and materials on the stock alone are of the cost of the Weatherby rifle. Custom hand finished stuff isn't cheap!
I wouldn’t really call a 9.5lbs rifle ultra light weight. Ultra light gets thrown around way too much. Many manufacturers have sub 6 or even sub 5 lbs rifles now. Putting a 2+ lbs scope on there also defeats the purpose of the set up. Looks like a great rifle but far from ultra light weight.
That is no ultra light weight. Howa has a rifle that 4.5. Then if your wanting the 7prc Weatherby back country is 4.7 to 5.6 for less than half the price.
Great rifle but that being said I am a hunter reloader and gun collector 60+ years and have a couple hundred rifles built over the years and have owned most of the high end custom guns and have found you can get a Fierce rifle that will shoot as good if not better then the Proof be as light for about $3,000. I know because I bought one for each of my 3 boys and they are as good as the custom builds I have owned for twice the amount! That’s not an Ultra light rifle! The new Howa is an ultra light at 4-5 pounds. Most people can’t afford to spend that kind of money on a rifle even if it is nice but at the end of the day can you justify that price? No! My ultra lights customs are half the price and outshoot that gun! Still a great rifle but would you buy if if you had to pay full price for it?
Fierce makes a good rifle! No disputing that! Their rifles also shoot really well too, but again, it's like comparing apples to oranges. Fierce isn't on the same level as far as craftsman ship goes IMHO. And I'll say this again - they make a solid product. It's just not the same caliber. It's like comparing a Ferrari vs a Corvette. Both are aweomse, but there's just a lot more detail in one vs the other.
That’s interesting because I have heard nothing but horrible for Fierce. I know someone who theirs shot like 3.5” groups. Now Christensen are the ones I really question mark…. Have seen nothing but bad with them.
@@MuleyFreak Hey MF, I agree with you that comparing a fine custom rifle such as a TS customs rifle to the proof Tundra Ti is apples to oranges. However, not in the way you think it is. The Proof rifle is inferior in every way, except perhaps weight. Its $7300 price tag does not boast any impressive features. Your inability to customize the rifle makes it a high end low value off the shelf factory rifle. You honestly should have probably bought a gunwerks, and that is not something I can say I have ever recommended. Now, let’s get into the details. First this is a $7300 rifle WTF MF. (I know you got it free) Second, titanium does boast light weight performance, however, there are many premium action companies who won’t build on titanium due to its inability to handle higher pressures like its steel counter part with lightening cuts. Third, the fact it comes with swivel studs is laughable, what high end modern rifle lacks picatinny or arca of any kind? Fourth, carbon barrels are great for saving weight but I disagree that proof is the gold standard for any level of accuracy, check out any precision rifle related event. Fifth, you have a $7300 rifle with no muzzle device included. At this price point, I don’t see how you could recommend this rifle to anyone- it’s a fine rifle but not great. There are so many capable custom gunsmiths who could make a vastly superior rifle to a customer’s exacting specifications that would far exceed the proof rifle across the board with a savings north of $1500, muzzle break included and a bipod mounting system from this century. You are a tremendous hunter- however, you are doing a major disservice to your loyal fan base by recommending a clearly inferior product.
David, Erik here. How are you, brother? First off, I own more TS Customs rifle than probably Travis himself lol. Travis makes an incredible product, but as far as the apples and oranges comparison it's pretty simple. Travis doesn't make his own barrels, bottom metals, or actions currently. (PROOF doesn't make actions either). He started having some stocks made and fine stocks they are. With that said, there's my apples and comparing oranges comparison. Next item of business, I'm not recommending this rifle to all our fan base as it doesn't fit everybody's wants, needs, and budgets. With that said, imagine having your own custom rifle where you make your own barrels and stocks in house! Pretty incredible, really. Lastly, I wish it had an arca and or break too, but the brake is an easy fix and a smith can add an arca without much effort. Thanks for the compliment on my hunting abilities! Happy New Year!
@@MuleyFreakI’m doing well! Thanks for taking the time to make a thoughtful response. In the sense that Proof builds much of the rifle in house, I agree it is apples and oranges, I guess to me I more care about performance, and performance to value matrix. I have owned many proof barrels, and they have a definite performance edge over factory and semi custom options. Gunwerks has taken it up another notch or in house manufacturing but I don’t think they offer a good value either. Have a good one
22 inch is kinda pointless for a magnum action buddy has a rifle chambered in this cartridge with 24 inch barrel he gets 100 fps less than the box for 175 grain
@@MuleyFreak not talking about weight might as well go with a 6.5 prc or some other short action mag IMO if I'm gonna have a magnum at a minimum of 24 inch barrel is my pick but it's just my opinion and what I like.
