I was reminded of that wonderful book "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" of how Francie, as a child of poverty in the early 1930s loved the luxury of having condensed milk when the family could afford it.

As a young pastry chef in Boston I made all the pastry for the Parker House hotel, to make the rolls they just half proof the bun, place a butter pat on one half and fold it over. Thats a lot more butter than brushing it on.

I think the condensed milk spread on bread is an Asian thing. A lot of my peers are like that growing up.

In the first 18 months a baby's all-purpose brain gets programmed to discern the sounds of its native tounge, by pruning back unused neural connections in the aural cortex and refining those that are getting used. After that process is finished, it is (almost) impossible to learn to discern between sounds that your native tounge doesn't discern, the most iconic being L and R in japanese native speakers (which unfortunately isn't entirely true either, because L and R both subsume a whole range of sounds, depending on where in the world we are talking about)
