2:24 is perhaps one of the most unnerving performances I've ever seen in my life, just how he breaks into that breathless laughter, and the way it sounds and all, it sounds so genuine, insane and tormented. I was already floored by this film before I reached that scene, but this sealed it for me. Maybe it's a tiny, unimportant scene, but my god did it leave an impact on me with how disturbing it was. Robert Pattinson if you ever see this, I deeply apologize for looking down on ye for Twilight. Have it your way, I like your acting.
I'm honestly glad it didn't win any Oscars because people will love, remember and praise the performances of The Lighthouse in years to come regardless of it winning Oscars or not. "Oh, Parasite won Best Picture? Great, it's good to see that it's on the same level of Green Book!" fuck the Oscars.
@Ivan Renard nah, Joker and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood at the very least deserved nominations. So did The Lighthouse, Parasite and 1917. The Oscars had it's lowest viewer count this year too. So that's interesting to see.
You can hear it in his accent when he really gets going. Plainview and Winslow do have a slight resemblance to each other especially with the mustache.
The film should have received nominations with Pattinson for Best Actor and Dafoe for Supporting Actor and even more than just Cinematography. One of the best films of the year got passed over almost entirely.
What can we say he is a natural talent. He has made two movies so original and breathtaking that many directors who have been in the industry for decades could not even dream making.
2 full length movies as a Director & 3 shorts, but if you go on his IMDB you'll see that he has been around the industry for quite some time doing different jobs such as production designer and many others.
Once he mentioned Howard wrecking that boat and chasing him with an axe I had a literal 'wait WHAT' moment. I mean, normally you can sort of understand the turnaround where you have this moment of 'Ah I see, so that's what was really going on', but in this case I had no idea who to believe. Either one was a really good liar or the other one was downright insane.
The Lighthouse, much like another A24 movie, Midsommar, leans heavily on examining a character under gaslight. Wake completely shows he's lost his grip on reality when he scuttles the lifeboat, and then claims Thomas did it. Wake's entire relation with Thomas is based on abuse and disregard.
@@KingThrillgore I have one issue with this take and that's that in smashing up the lifeboat, he just saved his life. But how well would that play with a crazy guy who desperately wants to get away from you? There are times where it feels like his lies are to protect him
the unreliable narrator. personally im with defoes character. ive also read some out there theories that they are actually the same person one is hallucination the others reality.
Not lying I lost my mind when my English professor in college pushed me by having us write a 3 page paper in the the form of a song. We were not allowed to write it Normal
Is it gaslighting if he genuinely believes it? Chances are they're both completely cracked and Wake's been doing this for decades. No telling what he's been through.
I believe Wake is lying here because I doubt he would be able to outrun axe-weilding Howard with his bum leg. We see later on that Howard is physically stronger.
Winslow supposedly killed his boss when he was a timber man and Wake supposedly killed his second. That's an interesting connection between them. Young is a worker, old is a boss but each of them has allegedly killed a person in the others position before.
@Jesse Brennan and according to Howard, he didn't kill his boss but let him be killed by the logs. So they're both kind of guilty of murder by refusing to act. That is, if you can even believe what either of them say is true
Also, when you notice that wake was the one who clearly smashed the boat with an axe and chased Winslow, and then accused Winslow of doing exactly the same thing to him in the same order, as though he himself were Winslow. They both have the same name. Possibly the same guilt on their conscience. Like, are they the same person??
@@tristanmichie4741 I doubt that, since by law they were required to have at least 2 people at a time, and when bad things started happening they changed the law to three people at a time. One to always stay in the light if the other 2 are outside.
Best film 2019. Insanity at his best. Pure cinema, with two of the best acting i've ever seen. Some of the best atmospheres in a film. And that Black & White Is pure gold
This is my favorite 2019 movie. It doesn't have jumpscares or anything like that. It's just the spoky atmosphere. I fucking love it. I gotta rewatch it.
I love how Pattinson is walking on a razor thin edge between absolute madness and overacting. The wild gesticulating and vocal wackiness could have been horrible but damn...he’s a top ten leading man in the film industry.
LOL NOTHING about it is "HoRrIBLE" and FAR from "OvERacTIng" at all in ANY way as the acting throughout this WHOLE movie was PITCH perfect completely in EVERY way possible to capture the beautifully rising tension and madness of this movie, just like the whole movie is a MASTERPIECE of a film! Robert Pattinson was ALWAYS a FANTASTIC actor even before than due to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with his fantastic performance as Cedric entirely so to one of the PEAKS of his career as establishing himself as the BEST Batman ever made! He was ALWAYS a magnificent actor since the start, ALWAYS!
It's amazing that Tommy (Dafoe's character) is so cunning and deceptive; he is clearly convincing Winslow that he, Winslow, is insane, all to turn the attention away from himself and the crime that HE committed; the crime of murdering the second junior man. Dafoe's character is just as much a liar, insane, man as Winslow is; but Winslow did 'spill his beans', which makes him the better man. Dafoe's character continues to conceal his sin, which makes him the lesser one. That is the tragedy of this movie; one of the many tragedies.
I don’t know if this is canon or not but my theory is that the foghorn was the ship trying to communicate to Winslow and Wake for supplies and new keepers but they never reciprocated communication back. So in reality over a span of like 8 months the ship came back and forth to the island while those two were going mad and not even noticing.
“Aye lads, your shift’s over. We got new sickies and you’re relieved of duty!” *sees Wake chasing Winslow with an axe while screaming bloody murder* “On second thought, maybe we ought just leave ye be...”
This movie started to remind me more and more of The Shining. You’ve got someone taking a job looking after a creepy building in an isolated area, with eerie foreshadowing of insanity and murder to come, along with a bunch of surreal events that may or may not be hallucinations. Finally, both movies end with people going axe-crazy and giving in to insanity completely, driven mad by isolation or something supernatural. Plus both movies will give you an intense phobia of lonely naked women.
2:25 Robert Pattinson laughing and clapping hysterically had me at wtf 🤣🤣🤣 Ppl gave him so much hell for twilight, but i think his acting accomplishments are really kicking up.
2:24 bruh when I watched that in a theatre I got so fucking scared! Perhaps the most unnerving experience I had Except Hereditary. Ari Aster and Robert Eggers are both in their thirties and cranking out best movies out there!
Masterpiece of a film along with Eggars other masterpiece The Witch, cannot wait for The Northman. Eggars really is one of the next generation of great legendary directors
Don't know why this film didn' t win best picture. BTW the fog horn was the 3rd most important character in the film. To have a Horn become a character was genius!
I don’t know why, but for some reason at 1:00 I found Willem Dafoe’s yelling combined with the way he manically carries his axe to be funny! Everything else is pretty disturbing but this bit made me laugh!
Makes ya think though. That was a panicked scream (trust me, you’d know if it was angry), which makes me think maybe Tom really was the one being chased.
Have you given any thought to the fact that his performance in Twilight was the best it probably could have been? Just because it's a bad film, doesn't mean the acting in it is bad.
Copy/Paste. Robert is a good actor, High Life, The Lighthouse, Good Time, among other films he has been have great performances of him, he is a great actor, unfortunately most people only know him from Twitlight. It has evolved from Twitlight. -✔2017 movie trailer Good Time ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AVyGCxHZ_Ko.html -✔First scene of Robert Pattinson in The King (Important Note: plays the role of a French prince, the Director wanted his French accent and that his acting in the role to be exaggerated, somewhat cartoonish) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LmSWATt5x8o.html -✔Bel Ami (short clip that we're watching) this was in 2012 just out of twilight and still you can see range ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nNK9b4gBO24.html Pattinson is very respected and beloved in the independent film industry, they have watch him grow as an actor, Unfortunately since independent films most of the time aren't designed to reach major audiences most people doesn't know about his good performances. He has an extensive filmography has been acting in Indie films for 10 years.
One of the things I love about this movie is that you never know who’s telling the story. Is it from Wake’s point of view? Winslow’s? Or neither? Because of this, you never know who’s the crazy one or who’s the straight man. Both have crazy moments and both have sane moments, but neither is entirely “normal”.
Because any time someone is being chased with an axe it's an allusion to the shining? And every time there's a car race it's an allusion to fast and furious?
When I chase after someone I’ve just met swinging an axe and screaming “Don’t leave me!”, I get called weird but when Willem Defoe does it, he gets a bloody Oscar.
I like to think this is all happening while he crashed on shore and is being picked at by the birds the entire film before his death , willem is a representation of the man he killed or possibly even god with the light/all knowledge
