Classic festive comedy special starring Rodney Bewes & James Bolam. Thelma starts Christmas Shopping in September, while Terry faces Christmas on his own
@@jacksdjfam A wonderful Xmas special to a great series. And my favourite of all was the film. perhaps the only '70s sitcom spinoff which worked 100%? Happy Christmas if you are probably one of only two people to read this tonight and/or for anyone else in future years.
Terry and Bob are the only actors who 50 years later are still Terry and Bob. I used to love The Likely Lads. Rest in peace Rodney Ferris. To me you will always be Bob.
This show, was loved by my brother! I was only young, but l remember it well.😊🤔 I remember love thy neighbor too Dr Who, of cause was the best👍😊 In the eighties, l remember the Tomorrow People, and Hitchhiking Guide to the Galaxy and you can't miss the Two Ronnies👍 Everything was funny, and no one took offence. Those were the days! lm sure even though, there were problems people were much happier. Anyway enjoy the program, everybody. Moira From England.
If only we could bottle the atmosphere those 70's Christmases created. I watched What ever happened to the likely lads Christmas special from1974 last night. Pure gold!
I LOVE how Bob and Terry remember their early childhoods so precisely - and how Bob remains upset about Terry's revelation about Santa Claus. Watching it now, Christmas Eve 2022, it's as brilliantly original and funny as ever.
We didn't have much by today's standards but with hindsight those days were truly magical.how ,even though l know we can't live in the past l would swap it for todays life in a heartbeat. All the best.
@@davecollins9128 Yes, Still Game, too. Excellent. Who needs that 'Friends' stuff, eh? Garbage. The Hogmanay special is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
@@MartysWhiteSuit thé Hogmanay special! Thé flash back to the party and Isla throwing herself at Tam! Comedy at its best from start to finish. Comedy well written like Still Game, On the Buses, Steptoe and Son, The Golden Girls. Witty sarcasm. The best
Christmas just is not what it was full stop & it gets more & more about spending more every year . We got my Nephew, Neece & Brother in law a P.S 5 for Christmas there my Nephew 5 then 6 now I sead to him that will do you for a few years but eventually The P.S 6 will come out I sesd yes & he sead when that comes out you can get me that aswell. I just laughed & thought your Dam lucky you got the PS 5. Kids now see Christmas totally different to when I was a kid growing up in the 80"s , 90's our parents had to make a lot of sacrifices my Dad was on a three day working week in the early 90's , Mum had a part time job in a newsagents in the village so there was not always a lot of money growing up. They made sure we could get what we need but it was nothing spectacular a lot of the time I was always grateful to get what I could. But kids now just expect the best of the best no matter what the cost of it all they see is they want it . It was funny though we where always getting them the P.S 5 but three weeks before Christmas my Nephew pipes up to his Mum I would like a P.S 5 from Christmas remember he is only 5 at that time. His Mum my Sister has to try not give the game away it's tucked away in there garage at this point next to the house they are in the garage for something & my Nephew asked what is that over there lol.
Looking back, it might not have been that great but it seemed like it was brilliant at the time. I was born in '63 but utterly consider myself a child of the 70s. My daughter is just out of her teens, I feel sorry for her generation who can't even have a laugh without fear of a backlash from somebody or other. Give me a classic '70s sitcom - best of all an Xmas special - over the modern Americanised/PC (same thing) so-called (ahem!) ' humour' of today.
The 1970s for me was the golden age for sitcoms. When you think of the brilliant writers around at the time Galton and Simpson, La frenais and clement,Eric Chappell and David nobby to name a few. Not forgetting the fantastic acting talent too, bewes and Bolam,Corbett and Brambell, and Leonard Rossiter.Truly a golden age.
Whilst I fully agree with your sentiment (if not your spelling and spacing between words - sorry if that sounds mean but I'm just trying to have a laugh), I feel you forgot to mention the best '70s talent of all - a certain Mr Ronnie Barker.
How I miss these days people used to talk to each other and Christmas was a happy and family affair now Christmas doesn't mean anything no carols in school no nativity plays we seem to have lost all those things
Watched this as a young lad at the time, never forgot Thelma's Peter Pan outfit 🤪 Oh to go back to those times, the curtains have more personality than most comedians these days 😂
Loved the likely lads Im 56 now I used to watch this in the 70s. I was a young kid then great days great comedies Steptoe and Son Rising Damp Two Ronnies fall and rise of reginald perrin.
I was a pupil at the nearby Manor Park school on Addycombe Terrace when the learner driver scenes were filmed in 1974. Hordes of us kids were permitted to watch the proceedings from a distance, I remember 'Bob and Thelma' stopped their car just yards from us excited kids, this was probably between takes. They remain seated in their car motionless like statues and totally oblivious to the mayhem around them. It has taken almost 45 years to finally identify that this was the episode that was filmed outside my old school. Of course being a 12 yo at the time I was too young to watch nor appreciate the Likely lads back then, but now it remains a treasured memory of times gone past.
@@redlightspellsdanger7177 Well it is world famous for it's cleanliness and efficiency but the hot n humid climate is unbearable alot of times, cars and property super expensive!
I remember seeing this episode when it was first broadcast. Brilliant then, brilliant now, nearly 50 years later. Great British comedy and humour, virtually unknown these days.
RIP Rodney. You were part of one of the most treasured comedies to have graced our TV screens.Absolute classic.I know you were immensely proud of this too.God bless.
Miss those glorious golden years of Christmas telly of the 70s and 80s.....the anticipation and excitement for the annual Christmas specials , filled you with a joy for weeks before,...you just don't get that same feelingl from the telly we get today....great memories of wonderful times
I've just discovered that Rodney Bewes has died. I enjoyed watching Rodney and James Bolam in re-runs of Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads. Farewell Rodney. You will be remembered forever.
we never watched this as a family in the 1970s /i like looking back at this time brings my childhood back and tears to my eyes/ i am watching it now though/back to 1974 from 2022 wow x
@@happyfeet4506 Didn't think of that but I saw this episode on UK Gold a few years ago and they cut out the bit when Bob says I could even take Rolf Harris now that's taking it a bit too far for me.
@@jahno7154 for me comedy is comedy once you start cutting bits out it looses its appeal. Let's take the only fools and horses dvd box set it's been cut to ribbons a once great comedy ruined by the pc brigade
@@gingerfellah5665 Its so sad that people want to hear the words coon paki poof and old men lusting over teenage girls to have a big laugh when their was so much good funny comedy without outdated humour it was funny back then but not now
I just came across this Britcom a few months ago, and I have to agree that the theme song is really wonderful. It was written by the extremely talented Ronnie Hazelhurst, who also wrote the theme songs to "Are You Being Served?", "Yes, Minister/Prime Minister) among others.
I saw this episode in 1974 and I was 5 and Bob,s car the Oxford blue Vauxhall Viva is an awesome car and I wish I could when I learnt to drive have owned a car like Bob has in this episode

“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams..
Christmas in the 70s was magical my grandma was a true pillow stone of my life my best friend her stories of her youth through ww1 I feel a heavy heart now she has gone I feel very lucky to have grown up knowing her through 60s and 70s her name was is Nellie. I hope she is looking down on me especially Christmas time
Just wonderful to discover this classic, I loved this programme absolutely excellent to see proper non PC comedy channel & that theme tune, seems so relevant now. Happier Days indeed before the world went completely feckin mad.
Watching this Great comedy is the best ive had The Likely Lads Christmas 1974 happier times from the same team who did Porridge which is what were supposed to be doing till mid Feb Hahaha,, 😂No. Way
RIP Rodney Bewes. "Thelma, you've known me for long enough to know that I can't stand conducting a conversation when I'm in the lavatory!" Still making us all laugh mate.
It’s comical that Bob talks about the Great Escape being “usually on” at Christmas 50 years ago and it’s still being shown at Christmas all these years on.
In 1974 I was 9 years old, I loved watching W.E.H.T.T. L. Ls, however I don't remember this episode ... even though its dated ... it still made me laugh !!! ... Brill.
I watch this every year as well. Me and my mate very much modelled ourselves on Bob and Terry and there were loads of similaritys between them and us. I was Very much Bob and my mate was Terry. We watched this all the time although I was born in 1973 and my mate in 1974. Unfortunately my mate passed away suddenly in 2014. Looking back on some marvelous video I have of us two we were definitely the original likely lads l. God bless up there kidder.
How bizarre , or perhaps not as my friend and were likened to them by his mother. I became a Chartered Accountant and he a engineer in a factory that closed and he was redundant on his 30th birthday. He then started a motor garage, Sadly, he died in 2002 aged 55.
Thanks. Whatever happened to the likely lads is one of the greatest comedy series ever. Sadly, its relatively unknown. I watched them as a boy and I still watch and laugh at this classic series. Comedy does not get better than this
newdawnnation That's your problem then mate, it's been shown on GOLD recently, check your TV guide, it's been on all this week :) I've checked my TV choice magazine for 6 - 12 May, and it's been on Mon - Fri at 9.20am repeated at 2.40pm, Seriously, posts like yours annoy me big time, doubting that I actually watched a program on a particular channel. . . I mean, come on!!. It's easier to check first
newdawnnation Bolan doesn't have the rights to do that anyway. . . They were made for the BBC, which own the copyrights, I doubt he would have the powers to stop them indefinitely. I did read that myself somewhere on here. I've never seen anything official to say he stopped them, This Christmas special was actually shown both on BBC2 and GOLD a couple of Christmas ago, I actually remember thinking, I wonder why they have shown it so close together on 2 different channels. . .but then, not everyone has channels like GOLD, So, if he did stop them repeating it, it's either expired now or BBC took no notice and showed them anyway
I love the likely lads, they are available on Audible and I have all the series. I only discovered this Christmas special yesterday on RU-vid I watched it and I absolutely loved it. I’m watching it for a second time
I remember watching the Likely Lads first time around - brilliant comedy which has never dated. I had to smile when I noticed the party cans on the kitchen table - took me back to numerous all night parties and still managed to get to work on time (just!!).
