Absolute rubbish on TV at Christmas now, take me back to when TV was funny. Thank goodness for RU-vid and great uploaders.

This was a wonderful series - Alf [Warren] was certainly one of life's characters, he would have made the most miserable people laugh !

When comedy actually made us laugh.

Watching the first five minutes and what strikes me is the skill Johnny Speight has in writing - in writing _great_ comedy. There's nothing fancy or dramatic about three or four people sat in a pub watching life go by, but while the chat is pure trivia the delivery from Speight and the actors is for a clever satire on life. This is writing and comedy on the level of Galton & Simpson - nothing is really going on on the screen no, but the sheer irony and observations on life in the dialogue is absolutely brilliant comedy as there _is_ a certain amount of truth to what the petty little argument on the screen is all about. Johnny Speight comes from that generation of writers Galton & Simpson came from, and it's a skill and gift for sharp observation and satire that I don't think exists in todays generation of writer. It's one reason you could never get the tight and confined style of comedy Speight, Galton, and Simpson, all excelled in. No one today can do it....

Take me back to them good old days when no-one were affended . TV was limited but enjoyed .no network no cell phones no bother .plain simple life hard then no today complicated full stress and bitterness .enjoy life like Alf Garnett x

My old mum realised she had not paid her TV licence fee for a few months before Christmas in 89 & when we visited her on Boxing day she was eating some chicken breast left overs for her dinner......Not in my entire life have I ever been so angry as I was on that day. Apart from kidnapping her and bringing her home with us, I have never paid the BBC a penny since then. And mum spent every Christmas with us until 1997 when she passed on her birthday 24th December 1997.... We may laugh n scoff at these old comedy programmes, but the truth & reality kicks home to those of us who remember.

This is another one British sitcom well lot of people would say they are being racist and shouldn't be shown on TV today how long could you be there's no racism in these programs whatsoever those who do think it sit down and watch it properly

Alf Garnet reminded me of my dad, a right miserable old moaner, moaned about everything, Alf Garnet was real to life, if you went into pub backthen thats how it was, Sundays was when the family got up and instead of going to church they went to the pub in the morning and then back home for Sunday lunch then in the evening back to the pub for the night until chucking out time. You didnt need to go far every street had a pub, known as your local, one thing I can say is people in those days were much happier then then they are now, and the pubs were full, unlike now one by one they all disappearing and beer was much cheaper, I blame all these foreign beers too much choice.

Philip Fox, who plays the vicar that Alf scrounges booze from was very nearly Baldrick in the Blackadder series - he was in the pilot but Tony Robinson got the gig in the end
