What do bacteria and babies, empires and economies all have in common? Bill Gates discusses growth with professor Vaclav Smil. Learn more at gatesnot.es/38...
Check the link in the description. I think this video is really just advertising this man's (Vaclav Smil) book called Growth, which contains the data they're discussing in this video. It's the current book that Gates is obsessed with and is recommending everyone to read.
Gates is famously this guy's greatest fan. www.google.com/amp/s/amp.businessinsider.com/bill-gates-favorite-books-vaclav-smil-2017-12 . He is some kind of boutique scientist or something. Apparently very very camera shy. He's made a public appearance exclusively for the richest man on the planet.
@@kayondothomas7343 no bootlicking here m8. Just good advice to listen to men that have more knowlegde and experience than most. Who just happen to have chosen to be as useful and kind as they are able to. Wise as F.. as they say.
I think there has to be a limit to growth, if we only consider planet Earth as given and that‘s the current situation we are in. We only got limited resources and these should be used wisely and the usage should be vastly reduced. I mean, the ship is already sinking and if we don‘t change enough the question of the limits of growth will not be important anymore, because then everything will go back to the question of how to survive.
@@kkevus The economy is not a sum zero game. You can literally create wealth. Example: from an unvaluable stone and wood you create a valuable house; or even better, a robot that can build 3 houses. Wealth is literally created. Growth can therefore be infinite
other guy knows more about this subject than anyone else in the world - he's happy to share with someone who will understand, I'm happy for his excitement, personally
William Gates found dead through mysterious circumstances, billions missing. In unrelated news a former KGB agent and current Russian MP has bought the world's largest yacht from a Saudi Prince. The MP had this to say: Njet, I am not human trafficker, ludicrous claim, screams from boat is simply many cats. ... Is large cats.
@@cykablyat7180 Well, if YT is valued at between 26 and 40 billion (as per Google search today), and Bill Gates' net worth is around $110 billion, I'm pretty sure he could if he gave a damn. Alas, he's too busy being a philanthropist and spending his money doing good in the world (e.g Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation, among others) to give a Fk.
His humility is his biggest weapon. A weapon to trap you and millions of others into believing that he is a great man. You are so bowled over by his humility that you store all your personal information and top secret documents in computers run on operating systems developed by this man's company. That's the power of humility. But seriously what else can you do? You got no choice.
Right after Mr. Smil said that, Bill Gates added his small remark very wisely. Efficiency has increased a lot and that is something we can work on on pretty much every single thing. While this is a finite planet its resources can be used in a lot more efficient way which in effect will continue giving us that growth.

Hello Bill Gates. Greetings from the Czech Republic. This video is fascinating to me. I was watching it and realized the guy you're talking to has a strong Czech accent so i checked the decription below the video and realized the name "Vaclav Smil" sound Czech as well. Right after that I found out he was born in Czechoslovakia and I felt ashamed that I didn't know about his existence until today. He seems to be almost unknown in the Czech Republic nowadays. What a sad story. I have a small dream of starting a RU-vid channel in the future because I'd love to be an interviewer. If you refuse Bill then I hope at least Vaclav is gonna agree on an interview. It would be a great title. Vaclav Smil - the man who inspired me and Bill Gates. I'd love to interview both of you though. I read that you haven't visited the Czech Republic for a while. What a mistake sir! These years are the best times to visit the beautiful Prague. Ostrava is interesting as well. I highly recommend. Thank you for your insightful videos Bill. I wonder why don't you get more views. At least I can feel more special being able to watch your videos for free. Big thanks.
Congratulations Mr.Gates, I fell so lucky to be able to watch your channel. You are true leader and thanks for sharing your knowledge with the whole world. I don’t have worlds to thank you for all you have done for us. I am from Brazil. God Bless you!
@@kayondothomas7343 Guess what, I did. Those were the guys who got rich on child labor and inequality. And human rights movement more or less brought them down. We shouldn't dwell on the past, though. We have a lot to do educating our today's magnats on what being human really means.
They think just because they read a Facebook post and saw some stupid documentary they are now smarter than the world’s scientists and doctors and the years of sophisticated charity work into sustainability by Bill Gates is nonexistent and all he does is microchip vaccines.
@Amy XxX It's true that I admire Bill Gates, and I disagree with the theory that he is a pedophile, however, I cannot 100% verify that theory and probably never will, hence, I don't really care
@Amy XxX If did do some digging, I would expect to find information from questionable sources. The truth is, I will never know the truth, so best I just try to go by both sides of the argument.
A much longer discussion would have been very welcomed because it's an endless topic and we didn't get the nuances of Vaclav. Hopefully we get to interview him one day.
Don't worry our own man is growing fast mukesh ambani, no hate 11% growth of market gap in one month(nov) aprrox 9 lakh crore to 10 lakh crore rupees. Edit:- Market cape*, also he is officially the richest man of Asia and is growing crazily by each passing moment
@@abhyudaysinghparmar6055 I, personally, wouldn't be proud of Mukesh Ambani growing, while the avg ordinary man starves. The rich-poor gap is widening, and the middle class man is getting sandwiched in between. But, hey, this is not the place to discuss that, amirite??
@@ParaPsychic this socialist ideology is the reason for our fall, can't u understand industries funded by gov doesn't work it nvr had in any country, it was one of the biggest reason for the fall of USSR, if poor need job and support their should be someone rich enough to produce that u need ppl like ambani and tata to establish industries

The value of money is when you spend. And value of a human being is seen when he start caring about people in earth as a whole. "The people who change the world are people who do" Steve Jobs
It’s incredibly frustrating they don’t finish the discussion with a breakdown of increases in efficiency plotted against growth. At some point there must still be a hard limit reached where growth becomes impossible.
In my economics text from college, it said that if there is any one fixed input, then eventually the Law Of Diminishing Marginal Returns will set in. So, yes that would imply that having one fixed input, the planet, would induce diminishing returns someday, barring the use of asteroids, the Moon, etc. Also, Substitution is mentioned as a big deal: the ability to substitute for an input through innovation, social reorganization, or a physical item. Your video raises some interesting implications: Is existence ultimately "Malthusian", that we will outstrip utilizable resources with an ultimate decline and crash? Or - will we "stay ahead of the curve" like with the Industrial Revolution and The Science & Technological Revolutions that have shifted the process, causing significant increases in average life span and total population? But as your guest in the video, attacking the field of Economics is clearly going to produce better results than not.
The most wonderful thing to experience new ideas derived from the mind of a person who thirsts for science. Greetings to you, Professor billgates, and your guest
It takes enormous amount of time and work with some luck to achieve this. Also, you need to be incredibly smart. It's impossible unless you are a hard working genius.
