Desktop linux is a toolbox. You can do whatever you want and thats why most people do not run desktop linux.
@CybersecPat
@CybersecPat Месяц назад
Absolutely! Valid point. Nothing is as flexible or customizable as desktop Linux. I run Linux on all my servers, but the desktop just isn't for me!

Regarding the security concerns. Linux is not safe because there are no viruses, but rather how you install software. Getting some nasty exe from a 2000's website is way more experimental than using flatpaks from the official source. (which actually seperate the application from the system). And if you run a random script from the internet its not the operating systems fault. Its yours. Its like installing a random exe from the internet. I don't see why it makes linux "unsecure". Also you can use clam av if you really want to be sure. Which is used in most cloud storages.
@CybersecPat
@CybersecPat Месяц назад
This is a totally valid point. Any computer can be compromised by random scripts. However, flatpaks are a security nightmare on their own, same with snaps (on non ubuntu systems.) Couple that with the fact that most flatpaks aren't uploaded by the developers, but rather random people building the app, it leaves a lot to be desired.
@plugrolhuldo7736
@plugrolhuldo7736 Месяц назад
@@CybersecPat sure. Flatpak developers are aware of this. They've recently introduced verify marks when the app is secure. I wouldn't know other reasons why flatpaks are a security nightmare, but maybe that's just me?

I'm definitely not the average computer user, but for me desktop linux was something that I converged into with the years. As mentioned in the video, dev experience is great, My current desktop and laptop run smoother on linux than on windows ( for some reason windows love to crash on my laptop ). Also, with time I created a workflow that is very efficient and productive, but I can't replicate the same on windows or MacOS, because it lacks the support for customization that KDE and other WMs have. Answering the video question, should you use linux? Probably not. But will you benefit using linux? Maybe, depending on the specificity of your needs, you might see a lot of improvement. And for the average user that only browses internet etc, you can definitely see some benefits running linux.

When Linux works properly it is much better than windows, especially KDE, however, it can be a nightmare because updates like to reinstall things that were working, and make them not working... i'm mostly talking about Nvidia issues
@CybersecPat
@CybersecPat Месяц назад
Valid point! I actually decided to keep one of my laptops on Linux. It is a purpose built orchestration workstation and code writing machine. I know it makes more sense to have ansible/terraform on a server install, but there is something so nice about the gnome gui
@nostalgianinja
@nostalgianinja Месяц назад
Nvidia 555 drivers are out on Arch (and rolling release distros) and 90% of the issues are gone. There is still some manual intervention to still be done, but I've been running Wayland on Nvidia for the past year without many issues now. There's been a change in Nvidia's attitude towards Linux since a Noveau (Nvidia's open source driver) developer got hired at Nvidia, so maybe it's time to see if it's up to standard yet.
@kyledupont7711
@kyledupont7711 Месяц назад
@@nostalgianinja The problems I keep having may not be Nvidias fault. When the newer drivers or kernel updates, 550.78 to 550.90 for example, my config files get messed up and I'm back to having monitors not work, lacking 32 but libraries, lacking open gl settings in the Nvidia settings because the config file is gone. Its really annoying to have to fix all that over and over again I'm so fed up with it I just give up and don't use my external monitor or disable my integrated GPU. It seems like it is the framework of how Linux handles the drivers and config files that is to blame.

I don't think any single OS, including Windows, is the right OS for everyone. Linux these days is good for devs, super casual users, and gamers but not so good for streamers and creatives. Horses for courses.

My biggest problem with the linux community has been total disregard for edge cases, especially if they break your workflow. For instance I use Gnome because it suits me but my wife needed a distribution that would work well with scaling, and gnome is historically bad at it. Then when I set all of it up with KDE Neon to solve that issue she still ended up with a non native whatsapp application. Other than this, all other aspects of her experience are better than what she had with windows. On my end because Solidworks does not work on linux, I needed a separate PC for Solidworks that has windows installed and I RDP into this machine from my linux system. This also meant I could switch to a laptop because only the Solidworks machine needs a good GPU so that was liberating too. Cool so I made linux desktop work somehow, where is the catch? The catch is I have been using linux as a daily driver for over a decade and only been using windows machines provided by work so you can bet that I can make almost anything work personally. But just barely, and until the first poorly documented issue. For example there was a version of Mutter that introduced a bug where all X11 windows become choppy after some time and I had no idea what to do about it. Downgrading helped but then I found that there is a fork that fixes this. But mutter is not an "app" it is an integral part of the distribution! It took advanced knowledge to even understand where the problem is, saying that it is a skill issue that people do not want to get this deep into it is mind boggling because most people buy computers for work or entertainment, not solving random OS related issues! I really do not understand your issues with collaboration on linux, that is a browser thing most of the time so we end up using Office365 and Google Docs all the time. I also use NextCloud at home but that is collaboration between two people. One of the reasons linux is so usable nowadays is exactly the fact that most things are on the browser (and electron). BTW you zooming in and out is really distracting, I don't think it adds anything to the video. Combined with not looking into the camera it comes across as odd. Your content is top notch however, we need more varied and moderate perspectives like yours!

This has been a problem for me as well. I can't really find a suitable image editor to replace the ones I used in Windows (and no, GIMP is not the solution for me) and everyone has their own editing workflows. I've been a KDE user since Plasma 5 and GNOME just doesn't do it for me. I'm not sure why, either. Maybe it's time to put GNOME back on to see if it's still the same as when I last tried it...

Mockery is totally the way to make a point! Who needs to refute points that are made when you can make fun of the person instead? That is totally the way to get your point across and everyone will totally take you seriously! Shit like this is why people say the Linux community is toxic.

@plugrolhuldo7736
@plugrolhuldo7736 Месяц назад
@@CybersecPat but his point is, that everybody is complaining that its not exactly like windows, or supports its apps. Sarcasm is a valid way to express his thoughts. In my opinion you are right in many regards. But many people just want to use their computer and if they've used windows their whole life, it can be hard to make the switch. Especially with a completly diffrent system - like most people don't even understand that you get to pick a desktop enviroment, but rather see a picture of gnome and say: thats linux. But back to the first point, not having software you used on windows wouldn't be a problem if you hadn't used windows at all. This whole debate is frustrating. I cant bear windows using resources to power their garbage like recall, which is why I am using linux. But if others are okay with their privacy being no existent, its their soup.
