The Listening: The Story Behind Little Brother's Debut Album

Started in a college dorm room by a group of North Carolina Central students in 2001, the Justus League collective and offshoot trio Little Brother defined the sound of Durham hip-hop for years to come, constructing a style altogether distinct from everything to the north and south. This level of innovation turned heads with some of hip-hop’s biggest names, and the members of Little Brother (9th Wonder, Big Pooh and Phonte) have gone on to work with superstars like Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre and Questlove, who appears in the documentary.
Through the use of extensive interviews with the group and never before seen archival footage, The Listening chronicles a key moment in Little Brother’s past and present: the creation of their first album.
It is the first of two short films about the group directed by Holland Randolph Gallagher, creator of the web series Hype, and produced in collaboration with Little Brother for Come Hear North Carolina.
It is the latest in a long line of projects commissioned by the North Carolina Arts Council as part of their Come Hear NC initiative with the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

I remember running into 9th wonder at the Kennedy Center and I told him that The Listening and Minstrel show got me through my first enlistment in the military. I told him next time I see him I was going to get him to sign my Listening LP and he said aight...three months later he had a special Jamla showcase in Annapolis with Rapsody, and I met him after the show and he was like “yo I remember you” and Before he could say anything else I put that Listening album in his hand. Rapsody was asking me where I copped mine from because even she didn’t have that album on vinyl 😂

My homie was bragging about The Listening and one day at a club I got in his car and we listened to the whole thing and was like wow!. Sometime later i traveled from Tx to Santa Cruz Cali to see the Souls of Mischief and Little Brother was the opener for their Full Circle Tour, along with Z-Trip and Encore. I ended up staying at the same hotel as Hiero and A-Plus showed me much luv. I had a rental and ended up taking Little Brother from here to there. A-Plus put me on the guest list for their last show at the Fillmore in San Fran. This cool azz lady I had met drove me an hour to the show and i got us both in.....ONE EPIC NIGHT!!

I’ll never forget the first time I ever listened to a LB track... I was on my second deployment in Iraq in 2005. I usually stop by a shop on camp to buy new music whenever they would get their shipments in from the states. I seen the minstrel show and I recognized 9th because of a scratch magazine I seen him in but never heard anything he made, so I just bought it off that alone. I get back to my room and the first thing I hear is “ It’s a beautiful day in North Carolina y’all; y’all really need to be here.” That made my life right there because I’m from Greensboro and the fact that I was overseas missing home and I’m hearing something from there was much needed... that’s all I played the whole year...it was my getaway during a those stressful times of being in a dangerous environment... Thanks LB.

I personally think #TheListening is their best album. I love all of their projects but there’s a certain vibe, energy, & hunger they had on this project that outweighs their later efforts. #WhateverUSay & #TheYoYo are my faves! Here’s to all 3 members making more magic! #LBFam4Life 👊🏿

The Edwin Manna Filez I agree- I honestly feel like Little Brother has to be a Trio w 9th doing at least 75% of the production (Khrysis can throw a few beats in the mix) for it to really be an #LB project. That’s why I love The Listening soooo much. It was them at their core before the fame & money started splitting them apart.

A couple things: 1. I'm mad Questlove rated Common's Electric Circus higher than The Listening SMH 2. This documentary was too short (I understand a 2nd part is coming, was this intentional? DJ Vlad. or is it just not finished?) 3. They should've talked about the influence The Listening/Little Brother had on newer generation emcee's, the Kanye's (who they toured with when he was an unknown), the J Cole's, hell, Drake says on camera, the Listening was one of his all time favorite albums and Phonte is not only in his Top five but says he is quite possibly the GOAT which says a lot. (clearance for that clip would not be that hard). For Christ sake even Lil Wayne was an admitted fan of LB. 4. They didn't even get Pete Rock's input when he heard it?? He is almost always open to interviews. 5. Other then the above 4 gripes, this was a decent documentary, obviously great soundtrack, visuals were really dope, especially of NC's landscape, glad they used vintage footage. Glad someone decided to even do one on The Listening.

My actual little brother came to live with me for a few months in 2007 and he played "The Minstrel Show" at our apartment and instantly I was like "Yo who the fuck is this?!" he was like "What? You dont know about these cats? They about to be your favorites, watch." He wasnt lying I bumped all the LB's FOR YEARS and still do check for them to this day. They in my Top 4 of Hip Hop groups of all time (Tribe, Wu-Tang, EPMD, Little Brother). Saw them perform live once here in Seattle and it was great. I went through some tough times from 2007-2014 or so and to say LB helped carry me through it would be an understatement.

Speaking of The Source, that's what made me cop The Listening in '03. When I saw that they gave it 4 mics, I was like, "okay, these brothers are official... AND they're from my backyard??... I'm coppin' this." I also liked their name and the reasoning behind it, because I felt the same way as a hip hop fan listening to the golden age greats... I felt that cats like Tribe, De La, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth raised me as their "little brother." In the '80s and '90s, those Big Brother programs were big in the hood, helping out boys from single mother homes. Well, I didn't participate in that. I had the OGs in the streets and hip hop. They were my "big brothers." That's what makes this group so special to me. We're like kindred spirits. Carolina natives, college-educated, and real hip hop heads.

I was introduced to Little Brother through ABB Records. They were having a rummage sale in Oakland and I wanted to pick up some Dilated Peoples vinyl back then... Diane (i think) was talking up the group and you guys were going to Amoeba in Berkeley I think to promote The Listening... so I went and got the LP and Poster signed. Got a shirt of The Listening also that is still to date, my favorite shirt to wear. Best days ever...

Besides this album being one of my favorite albums and a certified classic, it was also my key to the underground. This is the album that took me down the rabbit hole and I haven’t turned back since. Peace✌🏾to Little Brother and the Underground!

This was fire! I first heard this from my boy Matt he was trying to be their manager. He brought back the listen to NY, and I've been hooked ever since. I would play it for everybody who had ears. Believe me, Long Island was rocking with just as hard as NC was m
