Yeah Blayne she’s a beautiful woman and what a talent there were so many black entertainers from that era. She gave a wonderful speech at the Oscar ceremony because the black community condemned her for her parts as a maid and she answered back “at least I’m working”. Hats 👒 off to Hattie McDaniel.

First time I saw this movie! I loved every bit of it. Loved that the grouchy old man was won over by his feisty granddaughter. Shirley's and Mr. Robinson's dancing was graceful and magical. I really think Shirley Temple was an amazing prodigy, and she was such a sweet kid! This is going into my favorite movies playlist.

@user-bd5ve2qm8f ...nope. Her mother, first...And then she was in a tiny tot dancing school at the age of 2 years old. She was " discovered" when she was three. The movie studios lied about her age making her younger. ..as well as considered a natural talent [they lied and hide the fact she had training]... Mr.Robinson was in three of Shirley's films after she had been in many beforehand, including BABY BURLESQUE. Those programs were very sexual in content. ❤

Well, kinda, sorta. Barrymore got frustrated when he forgot his lines, and Shirley told him what was was supposed to say. He went into a tirade of Profanities and Shirley was swiftly removed from the set and sent home, puzzled as to what she had done to be dismissed. She was later told the apologize to Barrymore. Oddly it seems he owed her the apology by my way of thinking.

You watched this movie in 1974 either on TV or CD. This movie was made in 1947. I made movies from 1947 to 1950. This ended because the US Government did a lobotomy on me and killed my parents. I happened to be in the Philippines at the time of the lobotomy and God made me into a ghost and I went to North Korea and I witnessed the Mongolians killing our American soldiers. I was told that US Government bought that peninsula of Korea to have that war. Later, after I told the movie stars what I witnessed in North Korea and that US purchased Korea from Red Chinese with War Bonds the movie stars raised to help out the returning soldiers of world War II. The movie stars and I went to Congress to report what the government had done. After the movie stars and I gave our testimonials, Congress passed an Amendment 22 to the Constitution and President Truman signed it which stated "No American man can be drafted for any war by the US Government or the United Nations." The US Government has made up all these lies about me and altered the Constitution.

Lionel Barrymore is Drew Barrymore’s great uncle (her grandpa John’s brother). I think if Drew Barrymore were a little girl during the same years that Shirley Temple was, she may have been given roles like the ones that Shirley had. But, of course, no little girl would ever be able to compete with Shirley Temple, neither now, nor then! Even so, Drew Barrymore has a pleasant sweetness about her, to this day, that seems to be lacking in most of the other women celebrities of today! I thoroughly enjoyed this entertaining movie! This is the first time I’ve seen it, and found it to have superb acting by everyone in it, and it was also a sweet reminder of how if we love others in spite of their ways that hurt our feelings, they might just eventually come around. 🙂 It was heartwarming to remember that the sweetness of a loving child can change hearts, and that is why every child is a treasure, even the ones who are unwanted by their parents!

Trivia, while most of this movie, originally in black and white is computer colorized, the final scene is in color---for REAL!!! Yes the finale was shot in Technicolor to close an otherwise (originally in) black and white film. The color in that scene is the actual thing! That was a common thing in some Thirties films, where most of it was monochrome, but with one or more brief Technicolor scenes.
@Joylibelle

The only good colour scene in the film is the end scene because it was actually shot that way in real colour Technicolor whereas the rest of the film was shot in black and white. Colourization is culture vandalism which destroys the atmosphere and mood of every black and white film that it's applied to. It should be illegal . From Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it .
@chrismulwee4911
@chrismulwee4911 3 года назад
@@michaelspilman5220 Colorization for this film doesn't work because the ending loses it's punch. The color at the end represents a happy ending. BTW even in the colorized version I can STILL tell the difference! Color generated by computer NEVER looks like the actual thing. I think you'll agree
@SonofFrenzi
@SonofFrenzi Год назад
Actually having compared this with an original uncolourised version - where the film is b/w until the Technicolor finale, I'm sorry to report that in this version - the entire film has been colourised from black and white. ie the producers of the DvD for their own reasons decided to "dispense" with the original colour and only use the colourising throughout - either because their source material was an old black and white copy or they didn't want to "show up" the colourising process. I tracked down an original non colourised print & the colour in the final scene was markedly different and incredibly vivid - and a full spectrum of subtle hues not present here..

Assumably the 1870s ;) . . . This is my favorite Shirley Temple film (with The Little Princess running it a close second). I always thought that her mother (Evelyn Venable) and the song she sings on the harp were so beautiful; I still know the words by heart (Venable was also the model for the Colombia Pictures logo). I was afraid of Barrymore, but his Old South dignity always impressed me. The scene where he smashes the vase scared me, every time (plus, it was an heirloom, which I always thought was very stupid of him). I love the part where Temple throws mud on his Mark Twain suit. Other favorites include the baptism scene (the gospel spiritual when they come up from dunking!), pretty much any scene where Temple wears a new dress, the song and dance numbers with Bill "Bojangles" Robinson (the staircase one is so clever, but I liked the one in the stable even more), Ma Becky, and who could forget the adorable little dog? It's weird to see it in color after imagining what they were for all these years.

Gotta love Hattie McDaniel as she is a legend in her culture n all cultures!! Without her pioneering iconic roles like Mammy in various movies in the 1930's, Black entertainment would have been set back a lot longer than it was?!! Her compatriot in the 1960's was Sidney Poitier who also was an iconic actor who did great things by his groundbreaking roles in films as well as Hattie did!!! Bill "Bojangles" Robinson n Shirley Temple were also in that same classic group of legendary groundbreaking actors, the two of them together did huge roles in furthering racial equality, giving future iconic black actors the chance to further their profession, as well as to knock down and ostracize racism left over from the slavery days that needed to be eradicated!!! I 💕 love this movie still and I am 65 yrs old!!!

She's so cute and adorable, makes me laugh. I keep in repeating the scene when her grandfather is confronting her about the flowers. She's so hilariously cute. How's love her.

I wonder what part of Kentucky the grandfather’s place was. -Abraham Lincoln’s wife came from the Lexington area. -There is a building in Bowling Green that has holes in the exterior from shots fired into it during the C.W. (It is now a B&B). -Octagon Hall, located south of Bowling Green, was built prior to the C.W. by a Southern man. The property has places that Confederate soldiers would hide in when Union soldiers would search and pillage. The house has been beautifully restored. The out-buildings need attention. During the Spring, the lawn is mostly wild violets, not grass.
