Fun fact: this was the last hand painted Disney movie. After that Beauty and the Beast was coloured by computer. All of the bubbles were also hand drawn.

Triton and Ursula are siblings, children of the sea god Poseidon, which technically makes Ariel cousin to Hercules. Jodi Benson still voices Ariel to this day.

One of the best Disney classics from the 80/90s renaissance. Ursula's song might be the greatest song in Disney history.

"But without my voice, how can I..." "You'll have your looks, your pretty face. And don't underestimate the importance of BODY LANGUAGE!" Fun Fact: Ariel (Jodi Benson) is the first red-haired Disney princess. Art Enthusiast Fact: Ariel's (Jodi Benson) treasure grotto includes the painting Magdalene With The Smoking Flame (1640) by 17th-century artist Georges de la Tour. Mythology Fact: In Greek mythology, the God of the sea is Poseidon, or Neptune in Latin. This movie's sea king has the name Triton (Kenneth Mars), one of Neptune's sons. Many merfolk appear in the film, but Ursula (Pat Carroll) is a lesser-known type of mythological creature known as a cecaelia: human upper body and octopus lower body. Disney Cinematic Universe Fact: It's possible that Prince Eric (Christopher Daniel Barnes) could be related to Prince Phillip (Bill Shirley) and Princess Aurora (Mary Costa) from Sleeping Beauty (1959). In the dining room in Eric's castle on Ariel's (Jodi Benson) first evening on land, there is a painting hanging on the wall. The couple bear a striking resemblance to Aurora and Phillip. Music Enthusiast Fact: Part Of Your World (1989) was nearly cut; Jeffrey Katzenberg felt that it was "boring" and far too over the heads of the children for whom it was intended. At a test screening children were restless during the song which did not have finished animation. In particular one child that sat in front of Katzenberg and spilled his popcorn and was more interested in picking it up than watching the sequence. John Musker, Ron Clements, and Howard Ashman all pleaded their case and begged Katzenberg to let the song stay to no avail. Ultimately, the one who managed to convince him to give it a second chance was the animator of the sequence, Glen Keane. Another screening was set up, this time with an adult audience. It was a greater success (even reportedly moving some members to tears) and so the song was left in the film. Katzenberg later said that he was happy no one listened to him because he couldn't imagine the film without the song.

The last Disney movie shut under a camera on painted cels. It's so impressive if you think about how all these complex scenes & FX were shot 1 frame at a time under a camera with no computer assistance.

This movie has one of my favorite scenes of all time(you guys cut it out.) Grimm tells Eric to give up on his dream girl. Eric throws his flute into the ocean. It makes a heartbreaking sound as it falls. So powerful, someone having to give up their dreams and settle. The irony being that "settling" meant he would choose Ariel. Also, I love the line, "Grimm i lost her once, I'm not gonna lose her again."

This story was originally written in 1837 by Danish author Hans Christian Anderson. You thought this version was rough, you should read the story. In that story the Little Mermaid is even more harshly treated in her deal, For example, with her legs come the fact that every step she takes with them will be agony.

Okay since you watched this I have to highly recommend you watch the prequel which is called Ariel's beginning where King Triton basically develops his hatred of people when his wife dies... ... ...and the sequel where Eric and Ariel have a daughter named Melody who is basically in the same situation as her mom she always dreams about being a mermaid!

This was the movie That the renaissance era of Disney began, the little mermaid is a classic. To this day, the soundtrack and the songs are perfect, the characters are perfect to King Triton him self is a god of Greek mythology He is the son of the god Zeus But the animators decided to make him the king of the sea for the movie. The Villain Ursula, her character design was based on a Dragg Queen called Divine, which is why she has such a stromtic and sasy personality. In the movie it had to be the Sister of King Triton but in the end the animators decided to remove it from the plot of the movie since they felt that all that explanation was unnecessary... PatCarol he did an excellent job giving voice to ursula ...Regarding the sequel, it is not necessary You don't miss anything to see it, just follow the life of Ariel and Eric out of the sea but it's not similar to the Original and the plot is a bit boring... don't watch the live action version either... that's good you ll" liked the movie.....

Triton is the son of *Poseidon*, the God of the Sea (and earthquakes), making him the nephew of Zeus, not his son. In fairness, guessing a Greek mythological character is the child of Zeus is generally a safe bet.

@pinkiepiereincarnate2291 Eric’s story is one example of what had been removed or changed. In the animated version, Eric’s parents are assumed to have passed away, but since Eric is only 18, the next step for him is marriage, but even with this piece of information, Eric’s life mirrors Ariel’s life in other ways, he can express his love for the sea freely, even go as far as to have a birthday party on a ship when Ariel couldn’t experience the land as a human, he can actually use music as a form of self expression and not just for other people’s entertainment, this is different from Ariel, even when music is being regarded as part of her own culture, she can’t really use it for self expression because it’s used in performances when she would prefer to express what she really wants in a song. In the remake, this part is completely changed, in doing so, the remake removed the parts of Eric’s life where he had the freedom of self expression, making his life almost identical to Ariel’s life, but in the animated version, a big part of why Ariel likes the land much more than her own home is because it’s different from her own home, the animated version achieved this difference by making Eric’s life different from Ariel, but in making Eric’s life almost the same in the remake, it would remove one of the many reasons why Ariel love the land and worst case scenario, it would make it much harder for Ariel to be attracted to Eric if being with Eric makes her feel trapped.

Many Disney animated films have a "Hidden Mickey" in it. In this film it is during the tracking shot in which we first see King Triton. If you watch that whole shot in slow-motion or frame-by-frame you will see Mickey (as well as Goofy and Donald) sitting in the seats, facing the stage.

Thanks rediscovering this was amazing. I did a 180 when I first watched it in Theatres. How could Disney turn such a sad story. In the end the Prince goes on to marry someone else. She sacrifices her old life for nothing, throws herself off the boat and drowns in the sea grief-stricken. It turned out to be a winner and the start of something truly amazing.

💫I've enjoyed watching the two of you. Please don't limit yourselves to 80s & 90s Disney. My own favorite Disney animation is "Lilo & Stitch" from 2002, which is objectively great in every way and also has personal relevance to me. But the early Disney animated movies from the 30s through the 50s are still among their best stuff, with some absolutely not to be missed artwork in "Snow White", "Pinocchio", and especially "Fantasia". "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty" too are really good movies. It's worth keeping in mind that the older Disney stuff was never aimed only at kids. Some of the old live-action Disney films are also high quality and entertaining productions, particularly "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (1954), "Swiss Family Robinson", and "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" which features a young Sean Connery in a rare singing performance.

I had never questioned the way King Triton looked before, but the water pressure comment would definitely explain how Ariel moved the giant boulder to her grotto @ 7:29 despite her dainty appearance, also keep in mind Ariel is supposed to be about 16 and Prince Eric is supposed to be in his early to mid-20s

I personally quite enjoyed the 2nd movie. It isn't as good as the first movie but there are elements of it I prefer and it has its fair share of good songs (again not as good as the first movie's songs). The prequel is just okay, it has one really good song and the villain is pretty lame but I didn't regret watching it. Overall I'd recommend the Little Mermaid sequels, there are absolutely BAD Disney sequels I would advise against watching but those are not them.

I’m so glad you enjoyed this film! I really hope you’ll check out the sequels as well as the new Luba action remake. Maybe after you’ve seen all the classic Disney films you could check out Disney’s Descendants trilogy which is about the children of Disney’s heroes and villains. Ursula is a Cecaelia, which are half-human, half-octopus. In the film, she was once a resident in the palace, possibly a royal magician of sorts until King Triton caught her using black magic and banished her. However, in the current license version of the stage musical and based on the deleted storyline for her, Ursula is the youngest of seven daughters. Her father was the sea god Poseidon, and she was always envious as he doted on the other daughters but not her. To ease his guilt for being an awful father to her, he gifted her a magic nautical shell. Ursula started using black magic with it to kill off her sisters to become the favorite. When that plan failed, she committed patricide, the act of killing ones’ own father; she then became the ruler of the entire ocean. However, she had a younger sibling, King Triton. When he became of age, he took back rule of the seas, the crown, and the trident. Then he banished her, and she swore revenge. It’s revealed the final confrontation that Ursula was responsible for the death of Ariel‘s mother. King Triton never knew because he assumed that humans killed her because she went for a swim one day and never came back. Ariel defeated her aunt by smashing her shell which acted as a life force to her. 🐙🐚🌊🪸💜🖤🩵💙
