no one seems to be appreciating the fact that that high note is a FEMALE high G. thats a note that most female singers find extremely challenging. This is incredible.
I never understood why they gave Ariel a skirt that looks just like a fin and then proceeded to also give her an additional fin. Quite a weird costume. I do enjoy Tituss and Sierra, though, so I guess it's a forgivable offense. XD
Molly Daugherty Music Yes!!! I thought I was the only one overanalyzing that. I just saw a High School production yesterday that had a similar skirt that looked like a fin, but they omitted the back fin, and honestly, it looked better and made more sense.
The costumes in this show were a tragedy all around. Some of the worst costume design I've seen on Broadway. The local theaters I've seen do this show have had much better costumes.
Wow...being a Tenor myself...I'm amazed with this man's voice. It's amazing, absolutely stunning. I might have to go see this just to hear more from him. Absolutely stunning!
I've always been so fascinated by live musicals! Can you imagine how much work and practice it must have taken then to perfect all that choreography?! That's true talent! I live in MT so don't really have as much of on opportunity to see many plays. Going to see a few shows on Broadway some day is definitely a bucket list thing for me!
New Broadway shows rehearse for 6 weeks. The entire cast (basically) learns the whole show ground up in that period. Once they enter previews in front of an audience, choreography, blocking, lyrics (probably not in this show though, obvi), and dialogue can change slightly everyday until critics week starts the week before official opening night. So, yeah it’s a ton of work but in a shockingly short time span.
Man, it's a good thing Titus wasn't in the Doomsday Cult. Can you imagine? "Under the ground! Under the ground! Darling it's safest Down in the basement Take it from me! Up on the surface people die Under the ground we'll all survive! We weren't captured! This is the rapture! Under the ground!"
ghostlylighthouses Agreed. I just saw a High School production that did that, and it looked way better than this, where it's strange to have the tail like skirt on her legs and also a tail in the back.
RU-vid videos don't do this enough justice. You don't know how spectacular it truly is to sit on the front row and hear the music in all its glory while watching these amazing people perform. It's breathtaking to say the least.
This is absolutely amazin.... All of the cast is flawlesly superb especially sebastian, as if the whole performance was not already brethtaking but his notes at the end of the song are comepletely mind blowing. These people are not just performing this you can see how much they love what they are doing... Fantastic!
I like Ariel's costume. It can look like she's floating in the water or have her tail sticking straight out. All of the costumes to me look pretty, bright, colorful, and creative. This performance is even better than the movie. I love how they extended the song, made a drum solo, and made the whole cast of "animals" sing too.
The fact that Tituss wasn’t cast as Sebastian in the live action was an absolute crime. The new version of under the sea it’s lame compared with this masterpiece.
No really, the staging was terrible. Don't give me that "from a director's point of view" crap. The show was critically panned and was a commercial failure. Everything looked cheap and tacky. There was no magic whatsoever. It was a garbage show, sorry. I love Sierra and Sherie, and I wanted to like the show, but it just wasn't good.
@bookgirl1000 His name is Tituss Burgess, and he's AMAZING! I had the enormous pleasure of having a singing class taught by him recently, and he's the teacher I wish I had for my entire life. He has a heart that reaches even higher than his high notes, and made me amaze myself by how well I could sing with just half an hour of his guidance. He's one of the the most amazing persons I've ever met, and I can only hope to be honored by his teaching one more time
Classic Disney movies were my whole childhood. Every time I rewatch them I feel so much love for them in my heart that I always feel like crying. I think I need a life. Or nah.
the set and costumes are perfect love this so much I don't get why everyone (not everyone of course) is being negative. The singer's are the best 1:23 'they get the urge start too play' is amazing also 'hot crustacean band's oh my god I love it so much also the note at 3:01 he has such good key range. anyone else agree
Rick Bok lol, Sebastian actually just has a Caribbean accent (kind of an amalgamation of a few). It's important to note because most Black, indigenous people not born in the Caribbean don't speak like this. Also, there are a lot of non Black people native to these islands who also have accents like this.
Although, they're both produced by Disney, they have different creative teams. Julie Taymor created the world of the Lion King on stage and not of Little Mermaid. It's just the world from a different perspective. I don't think horrific is accurate when you're comparing two different storylines set in two very differently distinct places.
***** I don't think it's as good either, but works for the audience, I suppose. It's more 'kiddy.' The Lion King used the African tribal aesthetic incredibly well and made the show epic, perhaps moreso than the movie. Julie Taymor, who designed the sets and costumes for TLK, is also a legend. It is difficult to create an undersea effect and keep it serious. They're on roller-skates which creates that fluid undersea motion, but have the drawback of being silly. I personally would have gone a lot darker with the color scheme, used a lot of layered mesh, and gone easy on the frilled pants.
When I was 8, I saw a TLM play in a small theater. It was incredible, the place was all dark and the characters, and the little fish were shown with a black light that made them shine, even I remember the fish swimming around the small audience. I don't know if it would work on bigger places, but definitely it's a good idea.
Am I the only one who loves Sebastian's costume? It's practical, stylish and he wears it incredibly well. Not to mention I enjoy the performance HE'S giving as opposed to doing so through a puppet. All these comparisons to Lion King are really ticking me off. (I see we forgot about Beauty and the Beast.) Seriously. Just cause it's a Disney show doesn't mean they're going to have the same team work on everything. Comparing cultural elements vs. interpretation. Unless you can put your money where your mouth is, I'd keep quiet.
I got the part of Sebastian for our school musical and it is such an inspiration to watch Titus and really capture the character.... It is a lot of fun doing the accent as well
The seaweed is always greener In somebody else's lake You dream about going up there But that is a big mistake Just look at the world around you Right here on the ocean floor Such wonderful things surround you What more is you lookin' for? Under the sea Under the sea Nobody beat us Fry us and eat us In fricassee We what the land folks loves to cook Under the sea we off the hook We got no troubles Life is the bubbles Under the sea Under the sea
Since life is sweet here We got the beat here Naturally Even the sturgeon an' the ray They get the urge 'n' start to play We got the spirit You got to hear it Under the sea The newt play the flute The carp play the harp The plaice play the bass And they soundin' sharp The bass play the brass The chub play the tub The fluke is the duke of soul (Yeah) The ray he can play The lings on the strings The trout rockin' out The blackfish she sings The smelt and the sprat They know where it's at An' oh that blowfish blow
+thomas read (Nova314) No I have not, I just assumed it was another stupid comment that is made by people that obsess over tumblr. Apologies for not getting the reference.
I knew it was Titus as Sebastian!! The theatre soundtrack of little mermaid plays on my pandora ALL the time and only Titus can hit those notes like that. Lol
