The reality is that Ursula never needed Ariel's voice Edit: guys I'm not saying literally about the story, it's just because the actresses are always so good LOL
TOTALLY. Queen Latifah would have steal the scene on the movie DUE TO HER AMAZING ACTING AND SINGING SKILLS, but I am afraid thats exactly "why" they didnt choose her. They didnt wanted her to steal the "spotlights" on behalf of other characters on the movie... AND THAT WAS A HUGE MISTAKE
I’m still baffled why they didn’t cast her in the live action version. After hearing Mama Morton from Chicago years ago, I knew Queen would’ve been the perfect Ursula
Her voice was closest with the original IMO. It's not easy to breathe thru, sing and act all at the same time especially on how fast Ursula's dialogue was and no second takes on this mind you. This was by far one of outstanding performances that Queen Latifah has done. She's outdone herself in this performance.
I loved Queen Latifah's performance but they already casted Melissa McCarthy as Ursula for the live action movie. I mean Melissa's great but Latifah slayed it like the queen she was here.
Queen Latifah is one of the most underrated entertainers. To go from rapper to actress to singer back to actress and do them all SO damn well is truly incredible. one of the GOAT’s!
MR. KING OF PHENOMENAL I mean she didn’t learn much from her father who kept her closed in for everything cause he was protective and she was I was think she was 16
@@dougy_dawg Instead of “Don’t underestimate the importance of body language...” It turned out “Don’t forget to underestimate the importance of body language...” lol 😂
I'm very impressed. Her voice fits Ursula perfectly, and she doesn't ever stop singing her lines, not to mention still in character after she burned her hand.
Lol I can’t be bothered to google, but does anyone know who made her costumes, or did they buy them?! I’m just in love with the first costume! The tentacles! Just amazing!
Honestly...this is all I need from a live version of an animated movie. I really don't need it to be any more than this. This feels like it truly serves a purpose.
Better than expected, but it is a bit too goofy for me. I feel like she is playing a parody of Ursula. In this song, she doesn't fully inhabit the original character the way Francesca Camus did, nor does she remake the character in her image the way Will Smith did in Alladin 2019. Uncanny valley.
I mean, fans have been saying for at least a decade that Queen Latifah should be Ursula if they ever make a live action movie. So no, I wouldn’t say it took a genius to cast her in this. Common sense. It’s beyond me why they chose Melissa McCarthy for the role in the new movie, but at least we get this.
Ursla isn't even that evil, she was very upcoming about the cost/consequences. She literally gave Ariel terms and services. And the on top of that she also gave tips on what Ariel could do without her voice to show interest.
She gave sexist tips, she directly manipulated the situation so that Ariel would go to her and took advantage of her grief, and then sabotaged her so she wouldn’t win. She never intended Ariel to win.
She has as much command of it as pat carol herself, matches a lot of her mannerisms and expressions when she played the character, with a few bits of work such as when to laugh among other minor intricacies she’d do great at this. More to say than Melissa McCarthy
I love that you can still hear Pat Carroll's laugh in the background. Queen Latifah did a wonderful job, and I am so glad they also included that small but iconic portion of the original.
Incredible performance. She nailed it. I wonder why they didn't cast her for the live action Disney movie.. I want to mention also that the stage is huge and the effects are amazing! Really great job! Credits to the producers of this show👌👍🙌👏👏👏
It is really odd choice to not cast her; when you see her on stage she actually feels like Ursula. I'm not sure if Melissa McCarthy can do that. I'm not saying that she's a bad actress, but based on her previous work, she conveys much different presence from Queen Latifah's. Lie waaay too different. Maybe they'll try to have a new take on the charcter? I hope to be proven wrong in the future
@@matthewcarter1973 That's really weird to me. Isn't it more important so that actor would feel like a character they portray? It's not like they're looking for models for a photoshoot, they're filming an entire movie
My wife is 8 months pregnant and as she was driving today, she got involved in a terrible head collision accident. Her car was pushed away 15 metres away while she was inside. I thank God she survived and the baby is okay. God is great.
For years and years I've been thinking Ariel was an idiot for giving up her voice to Ursula for a pair of legs to chase her crush. Now considering Ursula is Queen Latifah... yeah, I'd give her my voice, my bank account and my firstborn for a lollipop. She just rules, period
One of the things I adore about Ursula is how she starts out super honest. She reveals every disclaimer, every loophole, and still manages to sell a contract that is disadvantageous. Ariel signs it without reading it, like the terms and conditions of a website.
Amanda Alliance I agree and Shaggy sounded exactly like Sebastian, and John Stamos was great! I wish they all were in it. Wasn’t a fan of the prince though.
Do you know who they fuckin picked instead of her? Goddamn Melissa McCarthy. That shit pissed me off. McCarthy is annoying, talentless, and can't sing. Why the hell they picked her instead of queen latifa is beyond me.
@@that_goth_bitch3899 how is she annoying? And if she's talentless how do you think she got to where she is now? Give her props because it was probably difficult. Don't be disrespectful and you don't even know her like that do you have no right to talk about or judge a celebrity in that manner
@@framboesa185 no it wasn’t I enjoyed every bit of Melissa’s performance She did Ursula justice and she didn’t even play it comedically like she’s known for it was a serious role and she played it serious and she sang it excellently too She really sounded like the original The remake was an overall enjoyable experience for me and I can’t wait to watch it again
@@framboesa185 look you have your opinion and I have mine You are entitled to say her version was bad but I can also say that I really enjoyed it I should not have made it look like my opinion matters more but that is exactly what you are also doing
I would be THRILLED! She did such a great job in "Chicago" & "Hairspray" too! I also loved some of her non-singing roles like "Last Holiday" & "Living Single. I do a lot of Ursula related content on my RU-vid channel (l can share links) as I felt she was the most honest villain & super sassy as well! Part of that is because she was based on a drag queen Divine. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I8FXz3tqA0g.html
This is me singing with my own voice, with commentary on how refreshingly honest Ursula is: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J50pDHACAAg.html
I didn't know this existed til now and I LOVE it! Queen Latifah is exactly that, a QUEEN! Her performance was amazing, staying in character after burning her hand, the emotion she put into it. BEAUTIFUL! The effects on top of this all to make it all seem so magical. I didn't know I needed to see this til I saw it, know what I mean? Just WOW all around.
Ok I can't believe I've never seen this before! Queen Latifah is truly a queen!!! I mean wow you can tell she's put so much effort into this performance to embrace Ursula's character.
I had a different reaction. Hearing the similarity in Carrol and Latifa's delivery I started yearning for Pat Carrol's performance. She had a wonderfully versatile voice that could really hit those gravelly lower notes.
@@bighuge1060 I will say, of the two, I do like Pat's performance MORE. She has a bit more power in her voice and I liked how when she got to the part where she wanted Ariel's voice, there was emphasis on that line. When Pat said I want your voice EVERYTHING goes quiet and its very clearly understood. Queen Latifah just rushed right through it so the gravity of that sacrifice was lost.
I can only imagine how seeing a show like this as a kid would be simply mind blowing. Stuff like this is how you inspire the next generation of artists and creators. Super cool. Queen Latifah is awesome as Ursula!
I'm glad Queen Latifa did Ursula. Honestly there's absolutely nobody better for the role. Both Queens are classic in their own rights. Amazing performance 👏
That’s what I was going to say too…. My brother and I every night when kids on our bunk beds would recite the entire lion king movie, my mother would keep telling us go to sleep but then we would just talk more quietly and she’d be secretly listening smiling and tearing up listening to us lol
Abby Reaves the rhythmic speech between Ursula and Ariel in the middle wasn’t in the Broadway show, nor is it in the licensed version from MTI. As far as I know, it’s original to this version.
I agree! And it was almost a mini-burlesque moment when she peeled it off! As someone who does burlesque myself, I really love moments like that. This is a PG-13 "sing and sling" I did to an original song during quarantine: www.tinyurl.com/sexyclownsact
Honestly this is what I wish the Broadway production looked like the staging lighting props god the COSTUMES this is absolutely perfect and captures the magic of the original in a way I’ve never seen before
I fangirled the entire time. Ursula was my favorite female villain growing up. Queen Latifah was one of the women I looked up to growing up. Both kid me and adult me are going nuts.
As a kid I absolutely hated being named Ursula. So this made me super happy to be named Ursula after years of always constantly teased. I’ve always been referenced as the sea witch. Icing on the cake is Queen Latifah is my birthday twin!
