The Little Rogues: Vermin of Kaimere

Wherever humans settle down, it's a safe bet that local animals will sneak inside to take a little off the top. Although some of these incursions can be violent and devastating, today we focus on what Kiamerans call 'little rogues': smaller varmints that are more annoying than destructive.
Songs of the Inland Sea is the sequel to Tales of Kaimere! It is a nautical anthology, with all six short stories and novellas taking place in aquatic settings. There are heists on a ship, a desperate chase through a marsh, and a survival story from the perspective of a killer whale!

I like the idea that kaimerans, themselves surrounded by vicious megafauna, almost feel a sort of mildly resentful kinship with these little critters. Rat: (stuffing it's face with corn) Earthling: "doesn't that make you angry?" Kaimeran: "i mean he do be thugging it out, he's just like me fr"

Fun fact: Rabbits are native to Spain, but the Romans thought they were very tasty and liked the fact that they bred quickly, so exported them around their empire. 2000 years later in the British empire did the same thing bringing them to Australia and America.

It definitely good to know that that world is not free of vermin as well. The sloth hound size compared to the Hog makes the hound's role make more sense. I knew that the moment you brought passenger pigeons to kaimere that it'll be a pest to crops like it did back on our world's history. And I can't wait to see the video about the passenger piegon.
@TalesofKaimere
@TalesofKaimere Год назад
Yeah I should have compared the sloth hound to the sloth, but it's still much more practical in proper context than when I had only designed the larger mylodonts.

@@TalesofKaimere true and I bet in your passenger pigeon video that some are humans in the assembly would probably want to bring some of them to Earth and just saying that it was resurrected via cloning?
@TalesofKaimere
@TalesofKaimere Год назад
@@amm019 There is a segment on the Rewilding Initiative which seeks to reintroduce many recently extinct Earth fauna with Kaimeran counterparts. Cloning is a possible explanation they could use. There are a number of issues with the initiative that I'll get into during the episode, not the least of which is the possibility of disease and parasite transmission. It's basically impossible to do while Kaimere is still in secret thanks to how sophisticated conservation awareness and genetic testing is, so the initiative is unfortunately on an indefinite hold.
@amm019
@amm019 Год назад
@@TalesofKaimere all that definitely true and good to know that there is a rewilding segment in the assembly and mention in the future video. One way I could think of that day could be able to get past the diseases and parasites ordeal is assembly clone wanted the passenger pigeons from that world. Or, since calling bird has not been done yet, you could basically have an embryonic of the passenger pigeon merge with a regular pigeon's reproductive system, essentially turning it into a chimera, and have them reproduce the regular way and you will get Pastor pigeons out through a unquestionable method

The inclusion of some common small animals that live close to or within settlements instantly adds so much to the world that you're developing. Like I can now imagine walking down the streets of a Kaimeran ring town and in addition to everything else maybe I would see a rat running across an alley, or a small flock of pigeons on a rooftop. Perhaps a dog will start backing from around the corner and it will turn out that a sloth has snuck into the town by digging under the wall. Or I'll go out into a field and witness the takeoff of a massive flock of passenger pigeons. What I'm trying to say that stuff like that brings so much life to the setting because if you lived in Kaimere these are the kind of animals that you'll be seeing most of the time whether they'd be vermin or other urban species. If I seem too excited about small animals it's because today I had a couple of nice interactions with squirrels in the park, which once again reminded me to appreciate the little animals that live around us.

I love the idea of two similar species from different lineages being locked in a seemingly neverending struggle for supremacy. Usually in situations like this one species simply outcompetes the other with the loser in this scenario going extinct if it cannot adapt to an open niche or different context. In the case of the pouch rat vs the black rat however, the trade networks of the various port cities mean that any extirpation of one species is short lived and no victory lasts forever. This could allow for the two species to develope dedicated behaviors and, with enough time, morphological changes to populations that are geared specifically to combat their rival. The potential within that scenario to spawn interesting adaptations and behaviors is something I find incredibly interesting and inspiring.

I like the fact that you put a explanation at the end of the video explaning what is and what isn't a Vermin/Nuisible, who is can be consideed as part of this category or cannot ! Because there a lot of terms such this ones who are used abusively by many people yet to animals that aren't part of the groups in which people often said they belong. I can give a here also pretty short and comprehensive definitions of some terms about animals often used anyhow : 1 - "Vermin/Nuisible" : A vermin/nuisible is any species of animals (neve plants species) that can made or completely causes medium to great damages to cultural lands, croops or any kind of humans structures, or humans properties. The conditions to include a species as a Vermin don't most of the time include the dangers and attacks towards domestic animals and livestocks, and don't include anykind of damages made to the natural ecosystems. 2 - "Introduced species" : An introduced species is any species of animals and plants who are introduced in a ecosystem from which they aren't natives. 3 - "Invasives species" : An invasive species is any species of animals or plants who are introduced to a ecosystem in which they aren't natives AND on which they made medium to great damages, negatives impacts, to the native wildlifes, fauna and plants. The conditions to include a species as an Invasive species don't include species that were introduced but have neutral or positive impacts in the ecosystems in which they were introduced, or the ones that arrived by themselves naturally in a new ecosystem in which they weren't previousely present.

1. It's the updated look for the species. I'm not entirely sold on the look, and it might get another change, but the old one is definitely out. 2. I didn't really like the old one. Some anatomical issues largely stemming from having an ancestor that wouldn't work with the current timeline. 3. Eh maybe. Possibly a Kaishelan cousin but I'm still unsure. 4. Would be a good opportunity to study and refine the design.

While I feel this episode could have been far more out there in vermin choice, I am satisfied with what we have and the new U'ruek, which was irrelevant until now. have there ever been magically enhanced giant versions of the small rats?
@TalesofKaimere
@TalesofKaimere Год назад
Yeah I decided to really get into rats rather than be too macro, but it did mean I didn’t have time for my original lizard and invertebrate segments. U’ruek haven’t gotten their due in the videos, but have been in a couple published stories! Their importance to the Pakardiant definitely deserves an episode of their own. Probably has happened now and then

There must be numerous others species close or convergently similar of Multituberculates that must look similar or exactly like the Pouch-Rat, and have the same ecological behaviors and niches. However, this very specific species, if I understand well, was endemic and natives to original island from which the First Children evolved and came. But since this island end up being destroyed due to a big event, making it unviable, and forcing the First Children to flee, if this species haven't follow them, and brought unvolontary by them, in their journey, they would have become entirely extinct otherwise. Also, it worth it to note that this species did also like the First Children did when they arived in the Known World, on Pakardia and Qajar, they bullied the local fauna. Like what, such invaders, such vermin as the images of these latters !

Yeah but instead of hogsloths we need to contend with wild boars, (depending on were you live)Black bears and sloth bears wich are actually the ones responsible for the most bear attacks in the world.

How intelligent are multi Spur Rats compared to placental rodents and marsupial Opossum?
@TalesofKaimere
@TalesofKaimere Год назад
They’re probably on par with the smartest marsupials, which are quite a bit more clever than their small brains might suggest.
@TedShatner10
@TedShatner10 Год назад
@@TalesofKaimere They say marsupial brains lack the connection tissue that placental mammals have developed (but according hints by fossil records, multituberculate brains were different again). Even multi jaw eating motion was different to placentals.
