With another lawsuit on the horizon from Future Motion, the maker of the Onewheel, we have some questions... and maybe some answers.
Floatwheel, a Chinese manufacturer of an electric balance board, is under litigation by Future Motion for patent infringement. This puts stress on the entire electric ride-ables industry as a whole, and history has a funny way of repeating itself. Do you think Future motion will take Floatwheel and others all the way to court to keep this board sport locked-down, or do you think they might have a change of heart for the community? Meh. They can get credit for bringing someone else's idea to market, but I'll never support them after years of willfully treating customers like garbage, and bricking old devices to increase sales. I'm happy to learn to ride on a floatwheel as my first ever wheelieboard.

The fact that they still have any good will after the XR and Pint flaws, deceptions, and "updates" followed by using their customers as a free loan to produce GTs designed to fuck over those very customers makes me worry the community just doesn't care enough to make a difference.

@tom.m Well, they soon will when their boards start developing problems and they need to ship their $3000 boards in for "non-warranty" repairs. FM has all but guaranteed this to happen because they are so afraid of losing their economic crutch.

@@h8GWthere is a line of code in their programming that suggests a GT WILL fail at 3000 ( miles 9r km I dunno, I assume Miles ) because of a program variable. This has been read off the micro processor as machine code ( binary ) so I can't say anything for sure for sure because it assumes I've decompiled the binary correctly which I cannot guarantee since I cannot test this variable without a gt at that mileage.

@@MrDmadness Why are you posting vague and unsubstantiated stuff like this (while adding a disclaimer that you could be entirely wrong)? You also argued strongly in a post elsewhere that the GTS was sure to start failing in significant numbers due to single series batteries and I responded with several reasons why that is unlikely to be the case but you had no response. It seems that you have an axe to grind and are just being vindictive. I agree with Jeff's message here, I am not a FM shill. There are a lot of things FM does that are unfair, unreasonable, or annoying but if the goal is to engage in dialog and hope to drive some more collaboration, community engagement, fair play, and technological improvements, why not just stick to the stuff that is demonstrably true? By the way, my GT has almost 5000 miles and I have had no failures.

Well said, Jeff. I have a lot of love for FM and the people there, and I can't blame them for wanting to protect their patents. ESPECIALLY since they're the only ones legally on the hook from the CPSC and injury lawsuits. Floatwheel doesn't take any of that kind of risk. However, for years my biggest complaint has been the lack of competition, and that it'll continue until freaking 2039!!!! We only need to look at the innovation in the EUC space to see what could've been. I love my Floatwheel and sure, it's blatant patent infringement, but it's also like... a better a board? More range, power, and customization than any Onewheel. I understand it doesn't have the same kind of (legal) safeguards that Onewheels now have, and that FM believes this puts the entire sport in jeopardy. But I dunno man. I just want the best board I can possibly get and for that, we need competition.

You absolutely can blame fm, they have been anti consumer since right after they reached their crown funding goal on kickstarter. Also fm stole their patent, arduino had self balance platforms in 2006 iirc

From Wrens lips to FMs ears. You and the Crew were a huge reason I ever looked into Onewheel to begin with and I know that's true for thousands of others. Since making the jump to EUC after the "buzz update" it's been insane to see the day and night difference between Future Motions walled garden vs the almost impossible to keep up with developments between competing EUC companies.

Hey Wren, as you supported onewheel a lot, we also need people like you who have a bigger audience and some influence to speak about competitors in your videos, speak about bad practices from onewheel etc. Don’t let your values be undermined by the fact you know some great people there. They also have people there who do those lawsuits against Floatwheel, steal riders and innovations from Floatlife, forbid right to repair to the entire community and make repairs and boards absurdly pricey! Please speak about it on your channel! 🙏🙏🙏 the community need you!

I just don't believe that's their real motivation. It's a piss poor excuse that their own behavior puts lie to. Bad offbrand boards could lead to regulation, as we're seeing at the local level due to things like battery fires in other PEVs, but not to FM being sued. But the bigger tell is that safety is not a priority in their own products. They cut corners in their designs, introduce malfunctions in their efforts to block repairs, and refuse to address well known and dangerous flaws to the point that they carry over across multiple hardware revisions. Then they make it difficult and expensive to have a flaky board diagnosed. They wouldn't even give us haptic buzz until they needed a way to placate the CPSC, and then they used it as another chance to screw their customers and break boards. It's painfully obvious safety is absolutely not their motive for any of the bad behavior. And it's insulting to be fucked with and told it's for our own good.

Not easy to get up in front of the camera and call out a company who has constantly tried to shut your business down legally. You're a real one, Jeff. Also, while we're talking about the similarity of the Burton comparison - can we also note the irony of everything that we've all re-learned (aren't schoolbooks just so FUN?!) about Edison vs. Tesla and patents? The motors powering the boards we love have all been built off the back of Tesla's work, while Edison used shady business tactics to steal or purchase ideas from inventors who had no money and a nothing but a dream. FM has done absolutely nothing to convince me to buy one of their products when it comes time to upgrade. I purchased a GT used, absolutely love it, and dread the day I have to interact with FM to fix anything as my board is kitted out with an Enduro, Steep and Deep rails, and a Kush Wide. On the sad day when my GT finally dies I will be looking everywhere but Future Motion and I just hope the competition will continue to grow and flourish despite FM's best attempts. They need to acknowledge that the sport is bigger than them and embrace competition and community rather than isolate and litigate, morons.

You can buy a vesc and convert the gt to a v3sc at that time. Vesc existed looooong before fm did so there's literally nothing at all fm can do about it since vesc by defanition 7s just a electric motor controller that can be used for any motor.

Unfortunately I believe innovation will keep on growing from the gardens outside the FM fence. If they did decide to open up the patent we would probably see Onewheels from Begode, Inmotion, Segway, Xiaomi, Floatwheel, GOSMILO and so on. What would those folks bring to the table? Better lights? LEDs? Speakers? Small hubs? Bigger batteries? Swappable batteries? Waterproofing? Airtag tracking? Adjustable heights? Suspension? Fast-swap motors? Ultra fast charging? Asymetrical shaping? Password locking? The list goes on and on.

We here in Europe feel the stranglehold even tighter because we have the added cost and time of shipping our boards back for any repair! When I finally came to my senses after having ordering the GT on the first day of launch and waiting forever to have it shipped but then decided to cancel my order when seeing that those first deliveries were having major problems, I told FM that I would never buy another board until they had at least a service Center in Europe, hence my Pint will be my last and only FM board! They also screwed many of us here in Europe by sending our expensive ordered accessories like the GT Hypercharger etc, way before the GT was anywhere near ready to be shipped so when we cancelled our orders we were unable to return the accessories which in my case cost me 300+ dollars! That sums up the calibre of FM! They truly are killing any chance of the sport growing here in Sweden!🤬🤯

Spot on Jeff! I rode for barfoot snowboards during the Burton take over and it had a huge negative impact on the company. Tom Sims and Chuck Barfoot coming from the Surf and skateboard background brought alot of new shapes, moving the industry to what it is today.

Very well said Jeff! They've continued to try and shut down innovation and it's only leaving more of a sour taste on the community that all these brands like TFL helped build. They can keep poaching your riders and copying your products and giving them similar names as an extra cheeky 🖕, but at the end of the day, it's only going to hurt them. The guys up top at FM haven't liked me from day one. Apparently from talking about a concave footpad on a OW podcast. I've tried to reach out and make things right yet they just ignored me. Ive been one of their biggest fans ever since I got hooked on the Onewheel+ when I saw them at Outdoor Retailer. Anyway, I really don't think FM can sue their way out of this. One day, someone will challenge their patents and when that happens and FM loses, it's only going to hurt them even more. It's time they shake the community's hand and start working with us instead of against us.

My hot take: GT Series S cost with the same profit margin as GT would be $2,600. With every GTS purchase, you are making a $500 contribution to the FM Patent Defense Fund and a $100 donation to support the factory riders. They now have enough funds for the next round of lawsuits and to keep the pro riders around for another year. The defense fund needs to be starved. I'm part of the problem since I have a Black Friday GTS on the way. This lawsuit was 98% guaranteed but Tony bumped it to 100% with his recent videos. "The ADV doesn't whine like a little b@tch. It just climbs." That was both funny and true, but it also wiped out any sliver of hope the community would have a kumbaya moment that some were hoping for. The animosity is real on both sides. (And yes, I'm aware FM started the hostility with their anti-consumer practices).

FM will NEVER have a change of heart. But they will continue to make big moves that, to a community desperate to hope otherwise, might APPEAR to be a change of heart... and that's kinda way more dangerous. For example, the Rider Summit looked like a step in the right direction, but for every rider except the 6 or so members of their factory team, not a single thing has changed, except that we the community have become more complacent because "look! See? They ARE listening to riders!" No. They're not. And they never will.

Thank you so much for posting this. I agree 100% with you. Floatwheel has caused so much innovation not only with their own boards, but also forced FM to start innovating. All of a sudden FM came out with new rail gaurds, Wheels, bumpers, a movie, the gts, etc. Competition improves the industry so much and it saddens me that FM is wanting to shut other people down. I ordered my ADV Pro and I'm so stoked!

Awesome video, Jeff! Really well thought out and articulate. I can't understand for the life of me how future motion did not see themselves embracing competition and perhaps evolving to become a higher end or luxury version of the single wheel self-balancing skateboard. If we were to pool the resources in this community, they don't have all the lawyers in the world to defend against what type of legal challenges they might face. This community tends to skew a little older, and some of us may have careers that may lend themselves to furthering a movement to end this type of anti-consumer, monopolistic oppression. Jeff, this needs to be a series. You should put out a video addressing each lawsuit or mishandled situation that pertains to the bettering of the community so that people can know what is actually going on. Then when the community is actually aware, FM address their customers as to why they are acting this way. 🙏🙏

I hear you 100% but it's not just tfl that needs to be aware it's us, the community 9f riders. I hope their “factory team riders” watch, and read and realize they chose the wrong team. I had respect for many of the guys on that team until they chose money and “fame” over integrity. SHame on them for being the new face of FM, while many of them have expressed frustration with FM in the past about all these issues. Those riders are nice people that forgot about the rest of the community. They could use their platform like Jeff has, and represent all of us. Instead, they choose the easy way.

I wholeheartedly disagree with your take on team riders selling out to FM. They’re individuals with families and other obligations besides a fun toy, and they weren’t making enough money at TFL to support those needs. FM offered them a way to continue doing what they love, while also being able to support their families and other life goals. Put things in perspective here.

Jeff the same thing happened some years ago in the custom light saber community, that had a few companies that work together that would try to shut down any other ones that started up. They did most of their business from a few forums here and there, but when community started to build on Facebook, they can no longer bully other companiesinto staying in their lane and now the market has exploded. There’s so many amazing products and a better price for the community.

My friend had the first Burton snowboard. It was literally a piece of molded plywood with a couple rubber strap along its length that went over your feet. The resorts would even let you get on their lifts, you had to walk up the hill. Amazing how far it has come.

I remember having an early Burton that had boots attached to the board you had to put the board on and pace the boots up lol.. yup, progression will happen with or without a company . It's not the company that makes a product good, it's a community

Way too many riders have been alienated :( I can't list how many things I've either worked on or finished that I've opted not to share because it'd just slap a huge target on my back. It has also become more complicated to get new people into the sport because I can no longer recommend someone buy an FM board with their current business practices and the way it stifles the sport, but new riders aren't going to want to deal with the complexity of VESC. I spent much of last year trying to share knowledge and help others in the DIY space in the hopes that more builders means more people have easier access to VESC DIY based boards and more options for repairs. I'm confident the DIY community will continue to grow. Everyone who loves the GTS owes at least a small sliver of gratitude to the DIY community and Floatwheel for pressuring FM to improve their products. Competition is good.

Actually, Tony made a product that is very similar to a Onewheel and operates in a way that is almost identical to how a Onewheel operates. However, just because the Float Wheel operates and performs better than a Onewheel doesn't exempt it from patent infringement. If Tony wants to continue making his product, his only option is to either continue with the lawsuit, and prove that he is not at fault for patent infringement, or if Future Motion is willing, they can make a deal. Since Tony is using part of Future Motion's design to make a Onewheel skateboard, Future Motion would get a part of the profits. However, this does not mean that there cannot still be competition. Ultimately, the decision lies with Future Motion and Float Wheel. If they choose to move forward with a deal or continue on with the lawsuit, Future Motion appears to be doing just that, as Tony did not ask for permission to do what he is doing, so there must be consequences. it’s just how the justice system works. This happens to multiple companies every single year because someone created a product that looks identical and uses parts, which apparently have been identified by future motion so now Tony is just suffering the consequences of pretty much product copyright so to speak and people might be replying to this message and be like oh it’s not copyrighted Bobbidi blah but according to the lawsuit, future motion has evidence of patent infringement so we’ll have to see from here. It’s unfortunate and it’s making people upset because the float wheel might be going away, but if Tony made things different and operates different and other things then there wouldn’t have been an issue but there is.

@@erikagrey1384 I disagree. While Future Motion has been the leader in producing OneWheel products, they are in no way a monopolistic dictatorship. If Tony had asked for permission to use parts from Future Motion's design to create the Float Wheel or use the same design, this issue of patent infringement would have been avoided. at this point, Tony’s basically stealing money from them so they’re suing if they came to an agreement beforehand what most likely would’ve happened is that future motion gets part of the profits off the float wheel because Tony used the Onewheel design. Future Motion is well within their rights to assert their patent and hold Tony accountable, which is unfortunately the situation Tony has found himself in. But that does not mean that there cannot be other competitor.

This sport has reached beyond FM now. If anything, FM can't even catch up to what's available out there anyway! They can't stop innovation coming from all these passionate riders! It's about time we act as a community and scare the pants out of FM, showing them who's boss~! You don't bite the hands that feed you, it's as simple as that. Floatwheel's success ultimately stems from some guy in China who has a better understanding of what Future Motion's community wants more than Future Motion. In all of Tony's videos, he's essentially preaching to the choir, and the advocacy that he cultivates from his customers is off the charts. If Jeff needs to make a video like this to point this shit out. It could be the beginning of the end.

Also see comparisions beween Stratasys patents in the 3D printing as they originally sued everyone using open-source designs and firmware (with Formlabs lawsuit for SLA patents in 2012 being most infamous) before realizing that competition is good for the 3D printing market and dropped most lawsuits in 2014. Since then 3D printing has revolutionized rapid prototyping and begun disrupted traditional manufacturing markets. Win win for everyone.

Awesome video Jeff. I have my criticisms about TFL videos, I feel you have to tip toe around things to not anger the beast but you are a respected leader of the community and I'm happy you are talking about this. You can see that since you posted this video, hundreds of people are speaking out now that we're more quiet before. I think this video will mark a point in history where the community takes a big leap in being vocal against FM practices. Yes there were a lot of us speaking up, but it seems like it just doubled thanks to you.

Onewheeling has been a absolute life changer for me and the community surrounding these boards is amazing. Its unfortunate that FM has to be an awful money hungry beast that refuses to innovate and when someone takes it upon themselves to do so they immediately go for the throat with lawsuits. I love my onewheels but I just cant support the company anymore.

After years of watching the company and contemplating buying a Onewheel, I was so close to finally ordering the Pint when they first came out. I ended up deciding to wait a bit more for a model that really grabbed me, but now that they've revealed their hand that definitely won't be happening. Great job, Future Motion!

Agreed, while FM had the right to sue, the fact that they did showed their true colors. If FM just listened to the community (right to repair, vesc-like settings, real product advancements), then probably floatwheel wouldnt need to exist. But guess what, this is capitalism. Money flows towards the better product. The customers are voting with gheir wallets. And now FM wants to be anti-competitive because theyre more concerned about the $$$ than the sport. This whole guise of "patent infringement" hides the true intentions. The fact that the entire community is against this... isnt an accident. Sorry FM but youre whole brand now is more tarnished than ever. I will never support a FM product again, only aftermarket

I love my one wheel and have been riding for years but i honestly don't think future motion has a future...customizing a board is the heart of all board sports. imagine not being able to change your trucks or wheels on a skateboard? insane. I sincerely hope future motion watches this and heeds this advice. I was seriously considering buying an XR before they went out of stock, but with their late releases, and everything they’ve done to their boards, I’ve seriously reconsidered. In fact to the point now where I’m almost completely against buying any of their products and leaning seriously toward buying a float wheel… If that’s even possible anymore Since they are suing Tony. If Tony goes out of business, FM needs to understand that someone else will come along and pick up the baton and FM will just have to fight the new up-and-coming competition. Future motion needs to release their chokehold and let the board sport grow, it’s the only way that they’ll get One wheeling to blow up. BTW, great video Jeff, maybe even better than the last open letter to FM.

So this is a two part ! #1 Thank you Guys Soooooooo much for getting my order out to me fast this past week. I got the WTF rails and all the other new add-ons installed on my PintX and OMG she is a new board in both looks and feeling. Its feels soooooo locked it and I jsut love the way it looks and rides !!! Part 2 It blows my mind how they "FM" can have riders like Bodhi and all the others and not just directly take there feed back and get to work all on the things we want done big and small. Like I want Custom shaping for my pintX which would take FM ZERO time so drop but they NVR will. FLOAT on my friends ! Love this community

Once again, spot on. I was hoping that with their original response video and then the adding of the brand riders that it would mean they'd be more open to things, but it's clear that we were all sorely mistaken then, and now. I'd love to see them being more open in the future, but frankly, it's unlikely with their current leadership. Also, perfect ending quote with Mark Twain, it was exactly what I was thinking as I was watching this. Going to watch that other video now. Hadn't seen it before, mostly as skiing was my jam and not snowboarding (I was never a hater though).

Even in the Burton US Open, they always allowed the riders to use any manufacturer's board they wanted. This is actually a real benefit for Burton because if they made the best boards and had the best team, they would be able to show the world how great they were and silence any naysayers. Should ORL do the same?
